Chapter 1

The moment my knees touched the kneeling cushion, a loud thud came from downstairs.

My father, Charles Ginger, slumped to his knees. He gripped the couch to support himself.

He was pale as he tried to get up, but his legs trembled as if he had just climbed Mount Everest.

My mother, Lana Ginger, was startled. "What's wrong?"

"My legs hurt." My father gritted his teeth, sweat beading on his forehead. "It feels like I've been kneeling on concrete for ten minutes."

I looked down at my knees. I had only been kneeling for a minute. "That's expected. You made me kneel all night, so for every minute I'm in pain, you'll experience ten minutes of it."

The room fell silent.

Millie Ginger whispered tearfully from within my older brother Greyson Ginger's arms, "Joey, Dad just wants you to admit your mistake. How could you scare Dad with such superstitious nonsense?"

Greyson's face immediately darkened. "Stop playing tricks! Millie almost fell down the stairs! You're lucky you've only been asked to kneel for one night!"

As soon as he finished speaking, his knees buckled, and he fell to his knees too. Since he approved of the punishment, he would endure the same one tenfold.

I kindly reminded him, "Now both of you are in pain! What a great deal."

Greyson was pale as he supported himself on the edge of the table, still stubbornly insisting, "It's just a coincidence! Continue kneeling if you dare!"

I nodded, kneeling even straighter.

My mother looked at the scrapes on Millie's knees and showed her bias again. "You should forget about dinner once you're done kneeling. You'll only get to eat once you understand that sisters shouldn't fight each other."

The next second, she clutched her stomach as her vision blurred. "What happened? I just ate! Why am I so hungry?"

Before she could finish speaking, she started experiencing acid reflux.

I thought about it. I had not eaten a single meal since being brought back to the Ginger family estate this morning, so her remark led her to experience missing ten meals for the one meal I missed.

A housekeeper hurriedly brought bread, and she ate three pieces, but her hunger only intensified.

I gently reminded her, "The punishment hasn't been lifted. Eating won't help."

My mother looked at Millie, who was still being held by Greyson, then at me kneeling alone in the family chapel. For the first time, she could not immediately speak up in Millie's defense.

Five minutes later, my father and Greyson looked as if they had been kneeling for fifty minutes. They struggled even to move.

My mother finally panicked and rushed through the pews to pull me up. "Joey Ginger, get up!"

"The punishment hasn't been lifted, so getting up won't help." I looked at her calmly. "I told you before I entered the estate to investigate any incidents before throwing around accusations."

Panting, my father finally managed to squeeze out, "Check the security footage!"

The footage from the stairwell was quickly projected onto the television.

At the top of the stairs, Millie had glanced back to make sure no one was watching before lunging toward me.

I simply stepped aside. She lost her footing and tumble onto the steps.

Throughout the incident, I did not even brush against her clothing.

Greyson fell silent.

My father stared at the footage, his face flushing red before turning pale. "I was wrong to punish you. There's no need to kneel in the family chapel anymore."

As soon as he finished speaking, the pain in his and Greyson's legs vanished instantly.

Millie began to sob even harder. "I was just scared. I really thought Joey had pushed me! Mom, Dad, I didn't mean to lie!"

My mother's heart softened, and she immediately pulled Millie into an embrace. "There, there. You've had quite a shock."

Greyson offered no apology. Instead, he awkwardly remarked, "Guess you just got lucky this time."

I brushed the dust off my knees. "It wasn't luck. It was the security footage. For a family as wealthy as yours, you really ought to make use of it next time."

During dinner, my father had the butler hand me a black card as a form of compensation.

I did not take it. "I can work. I managed to earn enough to cover my high school tuition, and I'll do the same for university."

I opened my old suitcase, which contained nothing but a few faded garments, some part-time employment contracts, and a stack of scholarship certificates.

My mother's expression changed as she gazed at the contracts, which offered a daily wage of $80.

Millie suddenly asked, "Joey, does this condition only penalize the person who finds you guilty?"

I looked up at her. "That's right."

She nodded, lost in thought.

At that moment, I knew she had found a loophole.

Everything Millie and Cynthia had done was gradually brought to light.Cynthia switched Millie and me at birth, and the pair had falsified evidence, embezzled charity funds, and made malicious false accusations. They had to take responsibility for their choices. The Ginger family held three family meetings in total to discuss how to compensate me.The first time, my father wanted to give me shares. The second time, my mother wanted to convert the largest room next to the master bedroom to be mine. The third time, Greyson brought an apology more than ten pages long.I stopped him when he reached the second page."Just get to the point."His ears turned red. "The point is I'm sorry.""Anything else?""We need to verify facts first before speaking."That just about earned him a passing grade.I did not move back into the Ginger family home. After starting university, I moved into the dormitory and worked part-time at the design studio on weekends.I did not turn down my rig

The next day, the Ginger family held a press conference. My father wore a grim expression in front of the media. "Joey Ginger drove away my adopted daughter. It was a display of poor character. From today on, she's no longer part of the Ginger family."Greyson pushed a termination statement in front of me.I signed it cooperatively and carried my old suitcase away. The whole internet was criticizing me.However, my father's knees did not ache, and Greyson's company was not wrongly accused.Because they knew I was innocent. This was not a conviction. It was just a show.Sure enough, Millie sent me her address less than an hour after the press conference ended. She demanded that I go alone to the mobile study bus that had been taken out of service, hand over the original DNA test report, and give up my position at the foundation. When I entered, she was sitting on the platform without the slightest sign of being driven away. "Joey, wouldn't it be better to admit defeat earlier?

The next morning, Millie was gone.A letter was left in her room.[Joey said I had to disappear so she could become the Ginger family's only daughter.]A voice recorder pen rolled out of the wooden box. It contained my voice. "You should have left long ago. It's either you or me in this family."Greyson's first reaction was not to question me. He pressed the pause button. "This sentence lacks context."My mother nodded with red eyes. "Find her first. Don't jump to conclusions."I looked at them, suddenly unsure how to react. When Millie shed a tear, they could easily sentence me to ten years of punishment. Now that she was truly gone, they still remembered to investigate.Cole quickly restored the complete recording. The original words were Millie asking me, "Will you only stay in this family if I leave?"I replied. "I don't think anything about you leaving. It's not up to me to decide if it's either you or me in this family."She only cut out the first part of the sentence

My father stopped pursuing the source of the secretly filmed video. Instead, he turned his attention to the birth records from 18 years ago. "Things happened one after another. There has to be more to this than Cynthia trying to protect Millie."Now he sounded like someone who knew how to run a powerful family.Three days later, the old archives sealed by the hospital were delivered to the Ginger family.Millie and I were born on the same day.Cynthia was in charge of the night shift in the nursery back then. She swapped our wristbands and, after leaving her job, sent the Ginger family's biological daughter to an orphanage in another town. When my mother saw this, her hands were shaking. "So Joey wasn't lost, but she was deliberately swapped? "No one answered. The new DNA test results were placed on the table.Millie and Cynthia were biologically mother and daughter.Millie turned pale and stepped back. "I didn't know. I really didn't know!"My father did not scold her but o

Secretly filmed footage from the charity gala went viral that same night. The video showed only the moment my account was revealed to have an extra $5 million. The police report receipt at the end was completely cut off.A social media influencer named Aaron Wynn recorded a reaction video, slamming his hand on the table and criticizing me. "I guess growing up in an orphanage makes you greedy! The Ginger family can silence people, but they can't control their own daughter."After he finished watching, Greyson asked the public relations department to suppress the news.I stopped him. "Don't take anything down. The more things you take down, the more it seems like we're guilty."I released the bank statements, the time of the report, and the appraisal of the silver dress all at once.Aaron still refused to stop. "It's easy for the rich to fabricate evidence. Such people should be kicked out of the education system!"As soon as he finished speaking, his account received ten violatio

My father's expression darkened. "Who are you trying to scare?"He froze my account and called his lawyer to report the case to the police. As soon as the order was given, his phone rang.Ginger Group's $50 million charitable reserve fund was urgently frozen over suspected unauthorized transfers.Exactly ten times the $5 million. My father looked up immediately. "I didn't touch that money!"The person on the other end of the line only replied, "The evidence is conclusive. Please cooperate with the investigation, Mr. Ginger."I whispered, "Does that sentence sound familiar?"He held the phone, and his face paled instantly.Outside the banquet hall, staff members rushed in, followed by the bank's risk control personnel. "Ms. Ginger reported the case at 7:41 PM, requesting to freeze the abnormal deposits. The $5 million never left the regulated account."I placed the police report receipt on the table. "I knew the moment the money came in."Greyson frowned. "Then why didn't you
