Chapter 2

Author: Sunset Silk
Three days later, the Ginger family held a banquet to formally welcome me back into the family.

My mother sent over a dozen haute couture gowns. I chose the cheapest one.

Millie looked at the price tags and smiled gently. "Joey, you don't need to save money for the family. But it's only expected that you don't know how to choose which gown to wear, since you've never worn nice clothes before."

I did not respond as I took out a needle and thread and shortened the overly long hem by two inches.

At the orphanage, no one bought me new clothes when they tore. I learned to sew as I grew up.

Before the dinner started, Millie suddenly burst into tears in the dressing room. A long slit had been cut in her six-figure gown, and the scissors had been found in my handbag.

This time, my father did not fly into a rage immediately. "Check the security footage first."

However, the security camera at the dressing room entrance was broken.

Cole Griffin, Millie's childhood friend, stepped forward with a sneer. "What's there to investigate? The scissors were found in her bag. Are you suggesting they grew legs and walked into the bag on their own?"

Having grown up alongside Millie, he looked down on me—the real heiress who had only recently been reclaimed with the family.

"Some people reek of poverty, yet their ambitions are sky-high. Joey can't stand how much more refined Millie is than she is, so she resorts to petty schemes to fight another girl. How disgusting."

I asked him, "So you've decided it was me?"

"Who else could it be?" Cole pointed toward the banquet hall entrance. "Apologize to Millie, then go stand outside and be a server for an hour. Thieves don't deserve a seat at the table."

My father frowned, intending to intervene, but Millie held him back. "Cole is just upset on my behalf. If Joey is truly innocent, standing there for a while shouldn't be an issue."

I smiled slightly, picked up a serving tray, and walked to the entrance.

I had been standing there for only three minutes when a scream erupted from the banquet hall.

A silk scarf belonging to one of the female guests and an emerald brooch that had just been reported missing tumbled out of Cole's suit pocket.

Ten guests swarmed him immediately. "Why does Mr. Griffin have women's belongings?"

"He even stole a brooch, yet he's trying to act like a gentleman!"

Cole's face flushed a burning red. "It wasn't me! My jacket was out of my sight for a moment!"

No one listened. They shut down his objections just as he'd shut down mine.

I had been left standing at the door for three minutes, so he spent a full half-hour surrounded and berated by the crowd.

Suddenly, he lunged forward and snatched the tray from my hands. "Stop standing there! I take back what I said. Let's get to the bottom of this first!"

With his initial verdict rescinded, the crowd surrounding him began to calm down.

Cole personally checked the dashcam footage from every guest's car and finally found a clip filmed from an unusual angle.

A housekeeper from the Ginger family had slipped the scissors into my bag and took advantage of the ensuing chaos to tamper with Cole's bag.

When brought before us, the housekeeper wept and confessed to having been paid by a stranger, though she adamantly claimed she had no idea who the person was.

Millie's eyes reddened instantly. "Someone must be trying to sow discord between us sisters!"

The trail of evidence ended there.

I did not argue. Instead, I took her ruined dress and, with just a few stitches, transformed the tear into a tailored waist pleat. Now, the dress looked even more striking.

A well-known designer, Norma Wilkinson, was standing nearby and noticed my work. She immediately asked if I wanted to intern at her studio.

I nodded. "As long as it's paid by the hour."

My mother paused, taken aback. "Are you that short on money?"

"I used to make $3 for every pair of trousers I hemmed at a tailor shop. I had to finish 20 pairs just to afford a day's worth of food."

I snipped the remaining thread, my tone matter-of-fact. "But there's no shame in making a living with one's own craft."

The guests, who had been mocking my humble background just moments before, suddenly fell silent.

After a long silence, Cole bowed his head toward me. "I had a foul mouth earlier. I'm sorry."

I glanced at him. "That's understating it."

His face flushed an even deeper shade of red.

Standing on the edge of the crowd, Millie dug her fingernails into her palms.

She had intended for this dinner to be my public humiliation, but instead, I had gotten a good job, and someone who was beginning to suspect her.

Everything Millie and Cynthia had done was gradually brought to light.Cynthia switched Millie and me at birth, and the pair had falsified evidence, embezzled charity funds, and made malicious false accusations. They had to take responsibility for their choices. The Ginger family held three family meetings in total to discuss how to compensate me.The first time, my father wanted to give me shares. The second time, my mother wanted to convert the largest room next to the master bedroom to be mine. The third time, Greyson brought an apology more than ten pages long.I stopped him when he reached the second page."Just get to the point."His ears turned red. "The point is I'm sorry.""Anything else?""We need to verify facts first before speaking."That just about earned him a passing grade.I did not move back into the Ginger family home. After starting university, I moved into the dormitory and worked part-time at the design studio on weekends.I did not turn down my rig

The next day, the Ginger family held a press conference. My father wore a grim expression in front of the media. "Joey Ginger drove away my adopted daughter. It was a display of poor character. From today on, she's no longer part of the Ginger family."Greyson pushed a termination statement in front of me.I signed it cooperatively and carried my old suitcase away. The whole internet was criticizing me.However, my father's knees did not ache, and Greyson's company was not wrongly accused.Because they knew I was innocent. This was not a conviction. It was just a show.Sure enough, Millie sent me her address less than an hour after the press conference ended. She demanded that I go alone to the mobile study bus that had been taken out of service, hand over the original DNA test report, and give up my position at the foundation. When I entered, she was sitting on the platform without the slightest sign of being driven away. "Joey, wouldn't it be better to admit defeat earlier?

The next morning, Millie was gone.A letter was left in her room.[Joey said I had to disappear so she could become the Ginger family's only daughter.]A voice recorder pen rolled out of the wooden box. It contained my voice. "You should have left long ago. It's either you or me in this family."Greyson's first reaction was not to question me. He pressed the pause button. "This sentence lacks context."My mother nodded with red eyes. "Find her first. Don't jump to conclusions."I looked at them, suddenly unsure how to react. When Millie shed a tear, they could easily sentence me to ten years of punishment. Now that she was truly gone, they still remembered to investigate.Cole quickly restored the complete recording. The original words were Millie asking me, "Will you only stay in this family if I leave?"I replied. "I don't think anything about you leaving. It's not up to me to decide if it's either you or me in this family."She only cut out the first part of the sentence

My father stopped pursuing the source of the secretly filmed video. Instead, he turned his attention to the birth records from 18 years ago. "Things happened one after another. There has to be more to this than Cynthia trying to protect Millie."Now he sounded like someone who knew how to run a powerful family.Three days later, the old archives sealed by the hospital were delivered to the Ginger family.Millie and I were born on the same day.Cynthia was in charge of the night shift in the nursery back then. She swapped our wristbands and, after leaving her job, sent the Ginger family's biological daughter to an orphanage in another town. When my mother saw this, her hands were shaking. "So Joey wasn't lost, but she was deliberately swapped? "No one answered. The new DNA test results were placed on the table.Millie and Cynthia were biologically mother and daughter.Millie turned pale and stepped back. "I didn't know. I really didn't know!"My father did not scold her but o

Secretly filmed footage from the charity gala went viral that same night. The video showed only the moment my account was revealed to have an extra $5 million. The police report receipt at the end was completely cut off.A social media influencer named Aaron Wynn recorded a reaction video, slamming his hand on the table and criticizing me. "I guess growing up in an orphanage makes you greedy! The Ginger family can silence people, but they can't control their own daughter."After he finished watching, Greyson asked the public relations department to suppress the news.I stopped him. "Don't take anything down. The more things you take down, the more it seems like we're guilty."I released the bank statements, the time of the report, and the appraisal of the silver dress all at once.Aaron still refused to stop. "It's easy for the rich to fabricate evidence. Such people should be kicked out of the education system!"As soon as he finished speaking, his account received ten violatio

My father's expression darkened. "Who are you trying to scare?"He froze my account and called his lawyer to report the case to the police. As soon as the order was given, his phone rang.Ginger Group's $50 million charitable reserve fund was urgently frozen over suspected unauthorized transfers.Exactly ten times the $5 million. My father looked up immediately. "I didn't touch that money!"The person on the other end of the line only replied, "The evidence is conclusive. Please cooperate with the investigation, Mr. Ginger."I whispered, "Does that sentence sound familiar?"He held the phone, and his face paled instantly.Outside the banquet hall, staff members rushed in, followed by the bank's risk control personnel. "Ms. Ginger reported the case at 7:41 PM, requesting to freeze the abnormal deposits. The $5 million never left the regulated account."I placed the police report receipt on the table. "I knew the moment the money came in."Greyson frowned. "Then why didn't you
