Chapter 5

Autor: Coffee with Ice
I felt a warmth bloom in me. "You're not mad?"

Z seemed not to understand. "Why would I be? You're working hard. It's not like you're deliberately avoiding me. Is that wrong?"

Goodness! What an amazing partner Z was!

I was moved to tears. "You're the best, baby!"

Along with the growing sense of gratitude came resentment toward Zack.

At this moment, I'd completely forgotten why I agreed to work overtime in the first place—a compromise on my ethics by choosing money.

I just wanted to blame Zack for messing up our plans.

That evil capitalist pig!

I sat up on my couch, the anger in my voice palpable as I hissed, "I'll never forgive Zack Barlow. That scumbag!"

In the past, Z would've laughed and agreed with me. But today, he was oddly quiet.

I thought he was startled by my sudden loudness. I quickly tried to smooth things over with a giggle. "I'll only get mad over my evil boss this way, never at you. You're both completely different. He's a scumbag, but you're the best thing ever!

"I wish I could see you. But for now, just be my 'princess' in the tower. When I’m finished here, I’ll come bring you home.”

Again, this was met with silence before Z asked, "Is your boss also named Zack Barlow?"

Also? Who else had a boss named Zack Barlow? Did he and I share a boss, then?

I was stunned by this revelation and stammered, "I-Is your boss also named Zack Barlow?"

There was a moment of silence before he replied, "No."

I was just about to breathe a sigh of relief when he added, "I have a… friend named Zack Barlow."

This plunged us both into silence. So, the capitalist pig I'd been badmouthing this whole time was Z's friend? Could things get any more awkward?

Even someone as shameless as me was at a loss for words.

However, Z broke the silence first. "To be fair, he's not really a friend. We've met a few times. We're not that close, baby. You can't take it out on me over this, okay?"

He sent over a few more photos of his abs and threw in some chest shots, too. How considerate of him.

My eyes lit up. How could I possibly take it out on him? I admired the photos and spoke soothingly. "Why would I? I know you're both not the same. You're so nice.

"You should stay away. Don't let him corrupt you. Zack is bad news."

"Alright," he replied.

After chatting for a while longer, Z said he had something to take care of and hurriedly hung up.

After gaming alone for a while, I fell asleep.

The next day, I went to the office. Since I was alone, I couldn't be bothered to wear headphones. I turned on my speakers and played some music.

I shook my head while writing that proposal, muttering to myself.

When I looked up, Zack was standing at the door. I was unsure of how long he'd been there.

I was startled. I wanted to turn off the speaker, only to knock it over in my haste. That speaker, blaring a song from my game, rolled right to his feet.

I was mortified.

Zack bent down to pick it up, pushing the power button. The room immediately fell silent.

My greeting sounded rather stiff. "What brings you here, Mr. Barlow?"

He walked to my desk and set down the speaker, his gaze ambiguous. "How lively."

"Thanks," I replied. I was going to assume it was a compliment.

I reckoned that everyone now understood, seeing their gazes shift from shock to awe. Jenny, in particular, was practically vibrating with excitement. Zack tucked away his phone, his gaze icy. "So, the reason your work was subpar was because you were moonlighting as paparazzi, Mr. Marr? That's me you photographed. Would you like to check under my bed, too?"William was fired that same afternoon.Regarding the lawsuit over the unauthorized photography and defamation, Zack didn't want me to bother about it anymore. I never imagined my relationship with Zack to be exposed like this. It was utterly ridiculous.I stormed into his office and gave him a piece of my mind. If he hadn't insisted I come see him yesterday, I wouldn't have been photographed solo, leading to this misunderstanding. As I stepped out, Jenny gave me a small cake. "So, you were his companion, and you were with me all this time? Given our friendship, it wouldn't be too much to ask you to have Mr. Barlow go easy on

  • A Toast to Tonight   Chapter 14

Zack's return coincided with the company's celebratory banquet for a major project. He rushed straight from the airport to the banquet hall. Dressed in a black suit, he looked weary from the journey, yet still radiated an air of distinguished elegance. Many people surrounded him, offering compliments and toasts, but he responded blandly.Halfway through the banquet, I received a text. "Basement parking, Section B. I'm waiting for you, darling."I snuck into the parking lot like a thief, wishing I had a few more pairs of eyes.As thrilling as trysts were, they were terrible for the heart. As soon as I approached the black Bentley, the rear door swung open, and someone pulled me into an embrace that carried a refreshing scent. The car was dimly lit, the faint smell of alcohol lingering in the air."Did you miss me?" came Zack's deep voice in my ear. I could hear the weariness in it, but there was also affection. I'd never felt this way when we first met. We had only been apart f

Zack arched a brow, a hint of teasing in his voice despite his gentle gaze. "Are you planning on guarding my door?""You wanted to see me?" I asked.Zack didn't answer immediately. He merely walked up to me, sighing softly. "Are you still anxious?"He leaned in, the fresh scent of his shower gel mingling with his own icy air to create a certain type of allure.I instinctively took a step back, but he wrapped his arm around my waist. "You called me baby online," he murmured. "Where's all the bravado now that we have to actually cuddle?"My face flushed crimson as I glared at him indignantly. "How is that the same? I never knew it was you I was speaking to!"Zack lowered his head. "But you know now. I'm flying to Minnen at 8:00 pm for a week-long business trip, and I want to fulfill my promise before I leave."Before I could grasp what he was saying, he guided my hand beneath his shirt, splaying it across his abdomen. This time, with no fabric in the way, I could feel the clear c

The sea breeze carried a gentle spray that swept over me. Even my heart was in disarray. I looked up at Zack, saying nothing yet. However, my initial reluctance had begun to fade. When Zack was not being a cocky prick, he bore a striking resemblance to Z. His tone was even, and he sounded sincere and reassuring.Zack paused, his tone softening considerably until it melted into the voice I knew so well. "You once said you'd like me no matter what I looked like. Does that no longer hold true?"I just wished I hadn't been such a chatterbox back then, blurting out talk like that as if it came cheap. Now, I was stuck with a bunch of complications.I stammered, unable to utter a single complete sentence for ages.Zack took the opportunity to pull me closer. "Didn't you say you wanted to feel my abs when we met?"He took my hand and gently placed it on his abdomen. Through the fabric, I could feel the intense heat radiating off him.I tried to pull back, but he held my hand tight. "Gi

I dared not look back. From behind me, I heard Zack's voice, which seemed slightly resigned. "I didn't mean to deceive you, Hayley. I had no idea."It wasn't until you mentioned I was your boss that I realized who you were. In fact, it was only slightly earlier than you realized."I didn't tell you because I was afraid of scaring you away, and that you could not accept me. "Let's just eat first, shall we?"The intense emotions had subsided, and I had calmed down considerably despite still feeling awkward.Sensing my hesitation, Zack tightened his grip on my wrist slightly. However, his tone was even gentler when he spoke."We ordered lobster and steak. It'd be a waste not to eat it. There's nobody here but us."I was wondering why there wasn't a single person in such a good restaurant. It turned out to be booked for a private event.Zack had some seriously deep pockets. After a moment's thought, I sat down again.Zack waved his hand, and the waiter began serving us food. I

I sent Z a text. "Babe, I'm already here—third row by the window. I'm wearing a dark green dress, and I have chestnut-brown curls. I'm waiting for you!"After sending the message with a kissing emoji attached, I suddenly felt an inexplicable nervousness, my heart pounding wildly.I couldn't sit still once I became nervous.I pulled out a mirror to check my makeup, then rearranged the bouquet of champagne roses, glancing constantly toward the entrance. For some reason, I was the only one here. Was the food so bad that the business was this slow?Just as I thought this, a waiter ushered someone inside. To create a romantic ambiance, the lighting inside the shop was dim and warm. From a distance, I couldn't make out his features. He wore a white shirt and black dress pants. He was tall, broad-shouldered, with a narrow waist, and he stood straight. He also seemed oddly familiar. As he drew nearer, his features became clearer. Hang on. Zack? What on earth was he doing here? He had
