Chapter 1

I had just canceled all the banquet arrangements and hadn't had time to inform our parents.

My wife-to-be, Rhiannon Tate, came back right at that moment. She had just given birth, so she looked a bit weak. But as soon as she opened the door, she started berating me!

"Have you deleted the comments? You're making Lionel look bad, do you know that?" she barked.

Then, she walked over to me and leaned in slightly. My expression turned terrifyingly dark. My fiancée had lied about going abroad to study and secretly gave birth to Lionel Devine's baby. Lionel was her childhood sweetheart.

When Rhiannon and I started dating, she told me she was a DINK—dual income, no kids. She said she didn't like children. I accepted that—only then did she agree to marry me.

My parents upheld very traditional values. I had worked very hard to convince them to accept this arrangement. But now, Rhiannon had given birth to another man's child.

It wasn't that she was afraid of the risks of childbirth. It was obvious that she thought that I wasn't worth the risk.

A year ago, she even accompanied me to the hospital to have a vasectomy after I proposed to her. She said she wanted to ensure everything was foolproof and that it would give her a sense of security.

I felt like a complete and utter fool when I revisited those times.

Rhiannon reached out to take my hand, but I quickly flinched away from her.

"That's enough, Clyde Lindstrom. Stop throwing a tantrum. It's not like I went behind your back. Lionel and I had never even slept together," Rhiannon said.

Rhiannon insisted she wasn't sleeping around and that I was the only one she had been with. She explained that the child was conceived through in vitro fertilization, so it had been done without any physical contact. She swore she hadn't betrayed me or our relationship.

I wanted to laugh out loud at the incredulity of it all. "You said before that you were traumatized because your mom nearly died giving birth to you. Then, you told me that you would never have a child in this lifetime. But when it's for Lionel, you're suddenly unafraid."

Rhiannon argued, "That's because I owe him this. Back then, he was seriously injured while saving me and became impotent. What's wrong with me giving him a child? He saved my life! Can you please stop being so unreasonable?"

Her eyes reddened as she glared at me. She insisted that the pregnancy was done via in vitro fertilization and that the Devine family would raise the child themselves. So, according to her, we didn't need to worry about anything.

"I'm just helping out so that the Devine family would have an heir. Besides, I came back to you right after giving birth because I was afraid you'd overthink. I haven't even gone through postpartum recovery yet," Rhiannon said in an aggrieved tone.

She lowered her voice and said she had already given me enough of a way out.

I was so angry that I couldn't speak. My hand that was holding my phone trembled uncontrollably.

The woman I had loved for so many years had deceived me and given birth to another man's child, yet she kept demanding me not to overreact.

"We're done. The wedding is off," I stated icily.

With a loud crash, Rhiannon smashed the teacup in front of her. The shards flew up and cut my forehead.

She screamed, "Why can't you try to understand me? I don't want to owe Lionel anything. He saved my life. I have to repay him somehow!"

Blood trickled down my forehead. However, I didn't feel any pain from it. The unbearable ache in my heart was way more pronounced compared to my physical pain.

Rhiannon came over anxiously when she saw that I was hurt. She offered to bandage me.

"Get out!" I roared.

That night, I locked myself in the study, chain-smoking one cigarette after another. What did I ever do to deserve this from her?

Oscar was determined and left no stone unturned. After several investigations, he uncovered Lionel's embezzlement and involvement in some illegal trades. Coupled with his attempted assault against me, it was enough to ensure he faced severe legal consequences. Some people were still criticizing me online, but I didn't care.Three years later, I attended a high school reunion. I rarely participated in these events, but this time, a few old classmates said they wanted to apologize to me."Back then, we were too quick to judge. We thought it was best to settle things peacefully since we were all classmates. We didn't realize Rhiannon was truly that awful!""It's fine," I interrupted, unwilling to hear these words. There was no need for them to insult someone else just to appease me.They then began talking about Rhiannon's current situation. After Lionel went to prison, she had to take care of his child for the Devine family. Since she had given birth to the child, it naturally fell

My colleagues and subordinates were terrified. Lionel was trouble from the start, having dropped out of school years ago and spending his days idling around.I chuckled and said disdainfully, "Your ability to twist facts is impressive.""Shut up!" Lionel barked, pressing the broken beer bottle closer to my neck. "I'm already a deadbeat—you're the one pushing me!"I didn't feel scared. If it came to a fight, Lionel wouldn't stand a chance against me. But I didn't want to make it easy for him."Have you thought about what will happen to your newborn son after you go to jail?" I asked."Don't try to threaten me! I'm not afraid of anything!" Lionel snapped. He accused me of making his life unbearable, of intentionally sabotaging his business deals and forcing him to repay debts. It was funny how he didn't feel aggrieved when he was spending my money."All those were gifts from Rhiannon. Why should I have to pay you back for them?" Lionel roared."Whose card was used to pay for them

"Come out, you vixen! I want to take a good look and see how charming you are to be able to seduce Clyde," Rhiannon shouted."Stop spewing nonsense," I yelled back angrily. "If you want to act crazy, do it at home."Upon hearing the commotion, Jane walked out with a cold expression. "It's fine, Mr. Lindstrom," she said calmly. Then, she turned to Rhiannon and warned, "Say one more word, and I'll sue you for defamation.""How could you team up with an outsider to bully me?" Rhiannon said accusatorily with tears streaming down her face.Jane was unfazed. She replied in an icy tone, "If I were you, I'd be discussing with the father of your child how to repay Mr. Lindstrom what you owe him."Rhiannon seemed to lose it entirely. She wailed loudly as she protested, "Lionel is just my childhood friend—my best friend. Why can't I have friends after starting a relationship? You were always busy with work, but Lionel kept me company. He ate and shopped with me to keep me company. When I h

It was pandemonium in the live stream. Rhiannon's attempt to hide the truth was falling apart. I had some photos of her crossing the line with Lionel that I hadn't even posted yet.Rhiannon blurted, "I owe him my life. Lionel got hurt saving me, and their family would've ended without an heir. I got pregnant through in vitro fertilization. There wasn't any physical contact."The comments spiraled out of her control.Jane smugly sent me a message to ask for credit. "See? That's how you respond effectively. Ignore whatever she says and go straight for the weak point."I replied with a thumbs-up emoji. She reminded me that this was how to handle malicious slander online. Desperately defending oneself wouldn't help—the burden of proof needed to shift to the other party. In the first place, Rhiannon was the one at fault. She ended the live stream abruptly and logged off hastily. She didn't linger and try to besmirch me further because she knew it wouldn't work.Still, insults and slu

I walked alone in the rain for a while. My heart was heavy, and I felt stifled. I had truly loved Rhiannon. I was drawn to her from the moment I first saw her back in high school. She was this vibrant girl who always brought bottles of water for the basketball team. She had boldly asked for my contact information and asked me if I had a girlfriend. I was stunned for a moment before I told her that I didn't have one.Back then, Rhiannon had asked, "Then can I be your girlfriend?"Her words still echoed in my ears.Over the years, we had fought and even broken up a few times, but we always found our way back to each other. I thought we would go from wearing school uniforms to walking down the aisle in matching wedding attire. However, our relationship fell to ruins because of the presence of a third person who was always lurking around."Boss, you're being attacked online. They're calling you the scumbag of the century," my secretary, Jane Sarandon, called me in a panic. She inform

"What do you mean by this, Clyde?" Lionel questioned furiously. He said that for Rhiannon's sake and to avoid affecting my relationship with her, he was willing to lower himself and apologize to me. But that didn't mean I could humiliate them endlessly."Did Rhiannon not explain it clearly? She and I have already broken up, and there's no chance of us getting married. Hold on to your money and use it for a post-birth baby shower or something," I said with a scoff."Clyde, how dare you—" Lionel gritted his teeth, his face turning pale from anger. He raised his fist as if to punch me, but I dodged effortlessly."How can you treat Riri like this? What kind of a man are you?" Lionel bellowed. So, he wanted a fight? Fine by me. I'd tolerated him long enough. Every time I went on dates with Rhiannon, he tagged along shamelessly. Whenever Rhiannon bought me gifts, he demanded identical ones for himself from her. Sometimes, he'd even help himself to the luxury goods I bought for Rhianno
