ESSENCE

“Well, in any case,” I said, shrugging as I took the last sip of my juice, “it’s all over social media. I just hope my son doesn’t stumble upon it. That kind of trauma will wreck him.”

Sky hissed, tossing her hand dramatically. “At this rate, I agree. Asher’s a kid. He deserves better than that.”

We chatted a bit more, the three of us going back and forth about Vesper’s mess and everything in between, until lunch hour came knocking. Sky pouted when I said I wouldn’t be eating with them.

“You’re abandoning me again?” she whined, clutching her chest like she’d been shot.

I grinned. “Lunch date with my personal billionaire-slash-bodyguard-slash-legal escort. I’m going to meet Lucian. We’re seeing a lawyer today. I have to get visitation rights for my son in accordance with the law.”

Sky’s drama flipped instantly to interest. “Wait—so the visitation thing? It’s really happening?”

“Yep. We’re making it official. Alex is about to be served.

Hailey raised an eyebrow,

  • A Whole New World   CHAPTER NINETY NINE

ESSENCE I must have zoned out for a while because suddenly, I noticed both Sky and Hailey staring at me like I’d started levitating in my seat. “Hey,” Hailey said, narrowing her eyes. “Where’d you go? You’ve been quiet for the last two minutes. What’s on your mind?” I blinked, smiled a little. “Nothing bad,” I said. “I’m just thinking… too many good things are happening to me at once. It’s almost scary.” They both looked at me like I’d grown another head. “I mean,” I continued, “I finally sorted out the whole mess with Asher. I get to have him three times a month now—every weekend. Danny’s flying in today. Lucian’s still in my life and somehow not tired of me.” I paused, chewing on the edge of my thoughts. “And I don’t know,” I admitted, “sometimes I just sit with all this goodness, and I start wondering... do I even deserve it?” Hailey reached over and squeezed my hand gently. “Of course you do,” she said. “What are you talking about? Essence, you—more than anyone I

  • A Whole New World   CHAPTER NINETY EIGHT

ESSENCE I stared at Sky like she had just announced she was quitting her job to become a nun. “You what?” I blinked hard. “You dropped the charges? Against that girl?” Sky was leaning on the edge of my desk, arms folded, eyes low, and lips tight in that way she always did when she knew she was about to get dragged. But this time, she didn’t even try to defend herself. “Sky,” I said, leaning back in my chair, arms crossed, voice sharp with disbelief. “She attacked you. At your own company. In front of your staff. While cameras were rolling. And now people online are calling you everything but a child of God. Why—why on earth would you let her go?” Nothing. Not a word. I turned to Hailey, who was watching the whole thing like she’d tuned in for a live season finale. Her eyes widened, and she mouthed, “Is she okay?” I shrugged. “Well,” I said finally, “this is definitely a first. I never thought I’d live to see the day Sky had no comeback. No savage clapback. No middle f

SKY I laughed. Not the kind of laugh that bubbles up from joy or amusement. This one was sharp and bitter. It scraped my throat on the way out. “You actually expect me to believe that?” I said, shaking my head. “Wait, let me guess. Are you still hanging around because you think I’m hiding the other fifty percent of your dad’s property somewhere under my bed? Hoping maybe I’ll slip and hand it to you in my sleep?” He opened his mouth, but I didn’t give him the chance. “I told you already—I gave it up. Every damn thing. To charity. I have the paperwork to prove it. So if that’s what you came here for, you’re wasting your time.” “I know,” he said softly. “I believe you. I trust you, Sky.” The words dropped quietly between us, like a pebble tossed into a still lake. I didn’t believe him. He rubbed the back of his neck, then looked up at me. “I won’t sit here and pretend like my relationship with my dad was perfect. It wasn’t. But I do regret it. I regret not being there w

  • A Whole New World   CHAPTER NINETY SIX

SKY I sat in the living room, staring blankly at the flickering television. I wasn't really watching. The sound was muted. The screen changed, colors danced across it, but I saw nothing. My arms were wrapped tightly around my knees, the soft fabric of my robe clinging to my skin, damp from wine. My phone rested beside me on the couch — screen cracked, pride shattered. I'd made the mistake of going on social media. Curiosity, they say, kills the cat, but no one ever warns you how brutal curiosity can be when it turns against you. I scrolled for no more than a few minutes before the venom poured in. "A polished shrew." "A glorified gold digger in heels." "CEO by day, homewrecker by night." And then the one that sank like a blade between my ribs: "She slept with the father and is now dating the son. Men should run." I had always known the world was cruel, but I never thought I'd be its next punching bag. They didn’t know my truth. They didn’t care to. They just needed a

  • A Whole New World   CHAPTER NINETY FIVE

ALEX I walked back into the house, and everything felt heavier than it should’ve. The walls looked the same, the silence still wrapped itself around the furniture, but something inside me felt... undone. My feet dragged against the polished floor like I had weights on my ankles. I wasn’t even sure why I came back here. Nothing in this house gave me peace anymore. Caroline was sitting in the living room, legs crossed, her face unreadable as usual. I hated how calm she looked—like none of this was her problem. "I’ve been calling you since yesterday," I said, standing a few feet away, my voice low. "You just went silent. What happened?" She looked up at me, and I knew from the look in her eyes—she didn’t bring good news. "How did it go?" I asked again, more anxious now. "Did she agree to come back? Did you convince her?" Caroline exhaled slowly and shook her head. "No, Alex. I tried. But Essence doesn’t want anything to do with you. She’s happy where she is." My chest tigh

  • A Whole New World   CHAPTER NINETY FOUR

ESSENCE The slap was still hanging in the air like a curse when I blinked back into focus. For a second, none of us moved. Not Sky. Not Hailey. Not me. And then—chaos. “You shameless witch!” the young woman screamed, her voice slicing through the courtyard. “You slept with the father, and now you’re after the son? Do you not have shame?” Sky didn’t speak. Her hand was still resting against her cheek, her expression a strange mix of shock and anger—as if her brain hadn’t fully registered what just happened. But me? My eyes darted around instantly. And that’s when I saw them—phones. Lots of them. Arms stretched out, lenses up, recording everything like it was the season finale of a show they didn’t even pay for. Hailey gasped, reaching out for Sky, but I was already pulling out my phone. Not to record. To call the police. Because this wasn’t just messy. It was public. It was in front of our company. And if word got out, it wasn’t just Sky’s reputation at stake—it
