SKY

The phone buzzed again.

I didn’t even flinch this time. I just stared at it, the screen glowing with Jack’s name like it was mocking me.

He’d been calling non-stop for days—two weeks now, actually. I’d lost count of how many times he’d knocked on my door, how many texts he’d sent, how many voicemails I hadn’t bothered to listen to. And still, he kept coming, like the silence I was feeding him wasn’t loud enough.

I wish I could say I was being cruel on purpose, but the truth was—I just didn’t know what to do with him anymore. Or with us.

This was the longest I had ever stayed away from him since... whatever it was that we became. Since that mess of a beginning turned into something too complicated for either of us to name. I needed space. I needed clarity. But space didn't stop the ache in my chest or the pull I felt whenever I heard his voice at the door.

And right on cue, there he was again.

Knock, knock.

“Sky,” his voice called, muffled through the door. “Open up

  • A Whole New World   CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND TWENTY FOUR

ESSENCE There’s something about silence that hums louder than noise. And today, it was humming like a broken generator in my head. From the moment Lucian showed up at my company with the boys in tow, I felt it. The energy was off. Not the kind of off that you can explain immediately, but the kind that leaves a sour aftertaste in your spirit, like burnt stew. Danny, my little energizer bunny, barely said three words. Asher kept fiddling with his fingers and staring out the window like he’d just seen a ghost. Only Lucian acted like everything was normal. Laughing softly, kissing my hand like the charming devil he is. But even that had a slight crack in the glaze, like a shiny plate hiding a hairline fracture. Still, I said nothing. At the hospital, the doctor said the baby was fine. Healthy heartbeat. Perfect growth. Textbook miracle. I smiled. But my smile didn’t make it past my lips. I sat in the car on the way back home and watched the two boys glued to opposite windows

ASHER I came out of my room and saw Mommy laughing. Her head was tilted back, eyes squinting, hand brushing Daddy Lucian’s arm as he chuckled too. She looked... different. Not like the version of her who used to cry or force a smile in my Daddy's house. This one was lighter, brighter, like she had swallowed sunshine and it was glowing through her skin. I stood there watching, and something warm settled in my chest. I’d never seen her this happy before. Not even when we had our old life. “Hey,” Danny whispered, coming up beside me, “I’ve got a plan.” I blinked and looked at him. “What kind of plan?” He grinned, that mischievous spark in his eyes again. “Since we’re on holiday, let’s ask Lucian to take us to his company.” I frowned. “To do what?” “To see everything. His office, his workers... what do they call them again? Employees.” “You want to spy on your dad at work?” Danny nudged me. “No. I want to see if his office is big enough to fit two little bosses like

  • A Whole New World   CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND TWENTY TWO

SKY By the time I got back home, my bones felt like melted rubber. Visiting the hospital always drained me, especially when it was for something as personal as my cousin’s illness. I’d promised myself I wouldn’t cry this time. I didn’t. But I did buy two meat pies and a soda for emotional support, so that says a lot. The street was quiet. The moment I stepped into the compound Hailey and I now shared, a weird energy hit me.... like the air itself had a bruise I couldn't see. I hadn’t told Essence I was living with Hailey now, and honestly, I didn’t plan to anytime soon. That woman could dig stories out of a locked box underwater, and I wasn’t ready to be interrogated just yet. I shut the gate and walked into the house, expecting a simple "Welcome back" or a dramatic retelling of what Hailey did after work. What I got instead was silence, and Hailey sitting on the couch like someone whose soul had just been wrung out and left to dry on a broken hanger. “Hey,” I said cautiousl

  • A Whole New World   CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND TWENTY ONE

ESSENCE When Lucian showed up for lunch, I had expected something laid-back..... maybe a quick bite at a café nearby. But no. My husband doesn’t do ordinary. Instead, he whisked us off to this classy restaurant where the chandeliers looked like they were made of frozen starlight and the chairs could probably pay someone’s rent. Sky took one look around and whispered to Hailey, “Essence came with the president. We’re clearly extras in this movie.” I rolled my eyes. But she wasn’t wrong. Lucian pulled out a chair for me, and I slid into it and flashed him a smile of gratitude. He sat beside me, looking sinfully sharp in his navy suit, and turned to Sky and Hailey like this was some royal interview. We went ahead and all placed our orders, before it began. “So,” Lucian began, “how long have you two been friends with my wife?” Sky didn’t miss a beat. “Long enough to know she snores when she’s exhausted and hides cupcakes in her drawer.” Lucian chuckled, eyes flicking to me. “Good

ESSENCE It’s funny how life throws you into war zones and then expects you to keep your lipstick intact. One minute I was checking if my unborn baby still had a heartbeat, and the next, I was planning school transfers like a suburban soccer mom. The moment we got home from the hospital, I collapsed onto the couch like a pregnant walrus in retirement, while Lucian sat beside me. “I’ve been thinking,” I said slowly, rubbing my temples. “We might need to change Asher’s school.” He raised a brow, all dimpled and attentive. “You think so?” I nodded. “Yes. I don’t want him commuting back to that area. It’s too close to Alex’s house. And it would be stressful for him too.” Lucian didn’t even blink. “Done. Just tell me what you need.” I smiled. “Thanks, darling. And oh, I’ll talk to Asher first. He’s the one changing schools, not me. If he insists on staying in his old school, I’m not going to force him to switch.” “Alright. Let me know what he says." Lucian replied. "And for

  • A Whole New World   CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND NINETEEN

SKY I hate that I was checking my phone again. And again. And again. But there I was, lying to myself that I wasn’t waiting for a call from a man I met just last night. A man whose hands had rested lightly on my waist while we danced, whose voice was the kind of deep that didn’t just travel to your ears but settled somewhere lower… warmer. Tobias. The name alone was enough to make me smile like a teenager. Which was ridiculous, because I wasn’t a teenager. I was a woman with a company to run, and a complicated relationship. But somehow, Tobias made me feel my heart flutter. We hadn’t talked much beyond surface-level details. He didn’t ask me where I lived, how many kids I had, or who I’d loved and lost. He just listened. Asked what I liked to drink, laughed when I made that joke about overpriced cocktails, exchanged contact and told me when we parted, that he hoped it wouldn’t be the last time. And then, just like that, he disappeared for a whole day. I spent the morni
