“Fayrouz” left the towering university building, making her way toward the exit gate, where “Jasser’s” car was waiting for her, accompanied by his private driver. Jasser had instructed the man to keep track of her movements and stay by her side like a shadow, ensuring her safety.
She passed through the gate quickly. The driver immediately moved to the rear door of the car and opened it for her, bowing respectfully. She got inside with her mind elsewhere... A distracted state that had followed her since the moment she woke up that morning. She had been so lost in her thoughts that she barely paid attention to her lectures.
The car pulled away, heading toward home, and an absolute silence descended inside it—a silence she had imposed upon herself long before the driver ever considered speaking.
She leaned her head back against the seat, and, despite herself, her thoughts drifted toward him...
“Jasser.”
His image remained vivid in her mind for a long time as she wondered what he was doing now and who he was with. Her mind was occupied with him... just as her heart was, and she had completely forgotten about the terms of their agreement.
Her memories drifted backward, to approximately a year and a half ago.
Specifically, to the seventeenth of June, right in the middle of the summer season...
“Fayrouz” sat gazing at the crystal-clear sea stretching endlessly before her, its waters extending toward a vast horizon.
She slowly and leisurely sipped from her cup of coffee, an earbud hanging around her neck as soft music played through it, adding to the already relaxing atmosphere.
The sun’s rays stung her exceptionally fair skin, leaving a faint, charming redness across it.
“You really are an idiot, Fayrouz... The entire resort is practically turning upside down, and you’re sitting here drinking your coffee as if you own the place.”
The words of “Nouran,” her friend, pierced her ears in her naturally loud voice.
Fayrouz quickly removed the earbud and stood up, slipping on her high-heeled shoes after having sat barefoot on the sand.
“What is it, you old crow? I haven’t had a moment’s rest since this morning.”
“Come inside. Mr. Hatem wants all of us in an emergency meeting.”
Fayrouz narrowed her eyes, looking at her expectantly.
“What happened?”
Nouran shook her head.
“I don’t know... He just said that and left. The meeting is in half an hour... But he looked extremely upset. His mood was terrible. It seems there’s a visit he wasn’t expecting.”
“All right, let’s go before he takes his anger out on us.”
She left with her friend and headed inside through the back entrance, the one designated for the female employees in the housekeeping department.
Her heart pounded with fear, and she silently prayed that nothing would happen to make her lose her job... The job she had desperately chased after until she had finally managed to secure it.
She had only been working there for three months, and this was her tenth job.
She had lost count.
Luck had never been on her side with any of her previous jobs. Eventually, she had ended up here, at this large and famous hotel located in the heart of the coastal city.
The hotel welcomed a constant flow of tourists throughout the year thanks to its prime location and remarkably exceptional services. During those three months, Fayrouz had made every effort to be obedient and hardworking, determined to prove herself and keep her position.
Her studies were just around the corner, and the expenses of each new academic year were nearly doubling.
She could not even afford a quarter of the amount.
Mr. Hatem stood before everyone with his arms folded across his chest, carefully surveying the faces gathered in front of him with a stern expression.
The hall was crowded with employees from every department of the hotel. Some had been forced to stand in the back rows because there were not enough seats for everyone.
The whispers gradually died down, and silence settled over the room when Hatem raised a hand, signaling them to remain quiet.
It was obvious from his expression that this was not an ordinary meeting.
He cleared his throat before speaking.
“Today, we will be receiving the most important guest in this entire city... Mr. Jasser Al-Morshedy, the renowned businessman, who has specifically chosen our hotel to stay in for one night alongside several of his business partners.”
Several female employees exchanged glances the moment they heard the name, while others remained silent.
As for Fayrouz, not a single feature on her face changed.
She simply continued listening in complete silence.
Fayrouz hurried up the stairs, her heart still pounding violently inside her chest.Yet she could not tell whether the reason was what she had been subjected to only minutes ago...Or the fact that Jasser had remained beside her throughout the entire journey home.Perhaps it was both. Her breathing was still uneven when she finally reached the door of her apartment. She hurriedly reached into her bag and pulled out her keys, but her fingers were trembling so badly that she struggled to fit the key into the lock.Once.It slipped.Twice.She missed the keyhole again.“Come on...”She muttered under her breath, frustration mixing with exhaustion. On the third attempt, the key finally turned. She pushed the door open, stepped inside, and quickly closed it behind her. Then she leaned her back against it and shut her eyes.Silence.For several seconds, she simply stood there. She could hear nothing except her own breathing and the faint pounding of her heart.Slowly, she raised a hand to h
.Her eyes widened in terror, a fear so intense that it paralyzed her thoughts for a few moments.“Please... let me go.”“And do you think I’m crazy enough to do that, you whore? Shut up.”His gaze was filled with vile, predatory desire, and his expression made her stomach churn with disgust. His grip tightened whenever she tried to pull away. She struggled desperately, trying to free herself, but he stopped her, slowly dragging the edge of the blade along her neck before lowering it toward the exposed part of her chest. He leaned closer, his face drawing nearer as though he intended to kiss her.Fayrouz squeezed her eyes shut in disgust and helplessness.Every muscle in her body had gone rigid. She could barely breathe. For a few seconds, nothing happened. Then another second passed.Still nothing. She cautiously opened her eyes. The man was no longer standing in front of her.Instead, he was lying on the ground like a piece of filthy garbage, while another tall figure stood between
Fayrouz stopped in her tracks. She stared at Nouran in complete confusion."What do you mean?"Nouran stepped slightly away from the doorway, but she still didn't let Fayrouz pass. Her expression had changed. There was something strange in her eyes, something that made the uneasiness Fayrouz had been trying to suppress return all over again."I mean exactly what I said."She paused before adding,"There isn't a place for you here anymore."Fayrouz's fingers tightened around the strap of her bag."Did... Mr. Hatem fire me?"Nouran sighed. She looked at her for a long moment before finally shaking her head."Not exactly."Fayrouz frowned."Then what happened? You told me yesterday that Mr. Hatem wanted to see me. He let me leave, and I came back today expecting to continue working normally.""I know.""Then why are you telling me that I don't have a place here anymore?"A small smile appeared on Nouran's face. Then she stepped completely away from the doorway."Because Mr. Hatem ordered
Jasser gently pushed her away from him, almost as though he had suddenly realized what was happening. He took a step backward.Fayrouz remained exactly where she was for several seconds, completely unable to comprehend what had just happened. Her breathing was uneven. Her eyes remained fixed on him in utter disbelief. She could still feel the lingering shock of the kiss, as though her mind had yet to catch up with reality.Jasser was looking at her in silence.Neither of them spoke. For the first time since he had entered the suite, he allowed himself to truly look at her. From the very first moment he had seen her the previous day, there had been small details about her that had caught his attention despite himself. Her long auburn hair. Her calm features. The way she looked at people. And, perhaps most noticeably, the complete absence of that familiar expression he had grown accustomed to seeing whenever someone recognized him.She had not looked at him with admiration. She had not
Fayrouz quickly prepared herself to receive the news of her dismissal from the hotel. The moment her colleague had told her that Mr. Hatem wanted to see her immediately, her heart had dropped straight into her stomach. There was no doubt about it.Jasser Al-Morshedy had complained about her. From the very moment she had collided with him in the corridor, Fayrouz had known exactly who he was. She had heard his name mentioned repeatedly the previous day, and she had seen his arrival become the subject of conversation among nearly every employee in the hotel. She had also seen the preparations. The special arrangements. The additional staff. The instructions that had been repeated more than once.Jasser Al-Morshedy was not an ordinary guest. He was the guest the entire hotel had been preparing to receive. And now...She was on her way to the manager's office.Every step she took down the corridor felt heavier than the one before it.What if he had complained about the way she had spoken
The moment Nouran disappeared from her sight, Fayrouz remained standing in the middle of the corridor for a few moments, trying to gather her thoughts.Where could a little girl possibly go inside a hotel this enormous? She looked to the right and then to the left before beginning her search on the second floor. She glanced into the rooms whose doors were open, checked the nearby corridors and corners, then headed toward the small break room where the female employees usually gathered.Nothing.She called out softly,“Layla?”No one answered.Fayrouz furrowed her brows and continued walking, trying to think of the places a child her age might be drawn to.Maybe she had gone to the garden.Or the restaurant.Or...She stopped abruptly. The elevator. She hurried toward it and, as soon as she reached it, pressed the button. Then she waited for it to arrive, watching the floor numbers slowly change above the doors. She was thinking about everything except the fact that the hotel where she
