Alex glanced back at Lucian.

Lucian’s expression was hard; he didn’t want to get down.

“They already checked the driver’s license. Why do they want to search the vehicle again? Is your license having issues?” Trout snapped at Alex.

“Please, kindly cooperate with us, sir. It won’t take long,” the cop said.

Lucian and Trout finally got out. The officers looked inside the vehicle and apologized.

“Sorry for taking your time,” one said as he let them through.

Trout brought out the suitcase from beneath the seat where he’d hidden it, and they continued driving.

They got to a junction when a truck came out of nowhere, slamming into them. The car tumbled violently to the other side of the road.

Alex groaned as the car finally stopped rolling—it had turned upside down.

He pushed open the door and crawled out, then moved to the back seat, opened it, and crouched to help Lucian out. Trout also climbed out.

They all had cuts on their foreheads, and Alex had a gash on his arm.

The first gunshot came from the nearby bush, taking down one of Lucian’s men.Alex and Trout stepped out of the vehicle, guns in hand. They scanned their surroundings, spotted the enemy’s hiding place, and opened fire.Lucian stepped out too, taking cover behind the vehicle door. He raised his head slowly, caught a glint in the bush, and fired in that direction. A loud scream followed.Alex moved closer to the bush. The moonlight above helped them see more clearly. The men in the bush rose up and began firing at Lucian and his men. One of them jumped out, taking Trout by surprise, kicking his gun out of his hand. They engaged in hand-to-hand combat. Trout dodged his punches effortlessly, grabbed his arm, twisted it, turned him around, and lifted him off the ground before slamming him down with a loud thud.Trout rolled up his sleeve and gritted his teeth. “Fuck—it’s the Black Roses,” he groaned.Lucian’s gaze hardened. Bullets flew, and he fired at them mercilessly.Alex watched him—t

Chapter 23Alex dampened his body with the towel as he stepped into the mansion, droplets sliding down his sculpted shoulders. He walked toward the fridge, opened it, and grabbed a chilled bottle of water. The plastic cracked softly under his grip. He twisted the cap, tilted his head, and drank deeply until the bottle was half-empty. Then he wiped his mouth with the back of his hand and closed the fridge door—Only to find Lucian standing there, silently.“Boss,” Alex muttered, lowering his hand.Lucian held a cigarette between his fingers, the glowing tip briefly lighting his chiseled face in red. He took a long drag, then exhaled. His eyes slid toward Alex, cool and unreadable.“I thought you’d be resting,” Lucian said, his tone rather unusually calm.“I’m your bodyguard,” Alex replied evenly. “I need to stay sharp. To prepare for situations like today.”Lucian’s gaze lingered for a second longer before he pocketed his free hand and walked off toward the stairs. Alex followed silen

Three days had passed.Trout was released, and everything continued as if nothing had happened.Alex was walking to Lucian’s penthouse, but what he heard from Trout three days ago still bothered him.Trout could be planning something dangerous—a way to get him killed. Probably a means of revenge. After Alex fell into the river because of Trout’s plan, he knew Trout wouldn’t stop now that it had failed. And the fact that Torres was supporting him from behind was alarming. That must be why Lucian couldn't punish Trout the way he wanted and had to release him the next day.Alex pushed open the door to the penthouse and walked in. Lucian was just putting on his shirt—it looked like he was going out.Alex decided to leave, to give him privacy, but Lucian called him back.“Never seen a man half-dressed?” he asked, fixing his buttons.“I just thought you were busy,” Alex replied.Lucian threw him the keys, which he caught. “We leave in ten,” his voice deep and steady.Alex followed after him.

Alex was dragged out of the dungeon, his body soaked in blood.Lucian sat comfortably; his gaze hardened as Alex was pushed onto his front roughly. He shot the guard a glare and the man quickly apologized, stepping back.Trout came in looking confused; he gazed at Alex on the floor and then back at Lucian.“Boss,” he muttered.Lucian glanced at the men behind him. Immediately they moved toward Trout and forced his knee down.Lucian stood, the cell phone in his hand. He tapped the screen and a recording started to play.“What’s the holdup, Alex?” Trout screamed over the phone.“You left me in the car with five bags of money without a guard. I need someone here,” Alex retorted.Trout smirked, a grin spreading across his face. “Don’t tell me you don’t trust yourself. Being around so much money makes your panties wet, huh?” he said in a cold tone. “Now drive.”Lucian paused the recording and swiped his head back.“I thought you said he attempted to steal the money,” Lucian said in a low to

Alex hid behind the wall to the next room where the goods were stocked for shipment. The men were already taking them out and filling the bus.“Don’t screw this up, Trout. I won’t spare your life if you fail this mission,” Lucian said sternly, with a low growl.“Boss, can I make a request?” “As long as it doesn’t send you to your early grave,” Lucian replied grimly.Alex listened while watching around to avoid being caught. He needed to know where Trout would be delivering the drugs and possibly sneak into the bus.He had decided not to inform Rosaline. He’d make a video of the exchange and then send it to Rosaline.Lucian wouldn’t see his downfall coming. Alex smirked where he hid, his perfect plan already taking shape in his head. He just needed to execute it.“Can I ask that Alex comes with us?” Trout requested.Alex stiffened.Lucian looked at Trout. Trout swallowed hard, hoping he hadn’t just written a letter of invitation to his grave.“Fine,” Lucian replied grimly. “He needs e
