I didn't sleep a wink throughout the night. I had tossed around till morning and my eyelids were heavy from lack of sleep and crying. I thought of what I had done to offend Jax ever since we got married. The betrayal from my husband and sister was shocking. I realized now that I had been making excuses for her all this while without knowing her true intentions and full character.
My ears pick out sounds from Jax's room. I don't need to go to the study this time. My sensitive ears pick up the sounds. They're having sex again and this time, they didn't even bother to close the door. I heard sounds of a shower being turned on and minutes later, the click of a door being unlocked.
"See you later, Alpha Jax" Nikini said in a loud voice, maybe hoping that I hear it and know that she had spent the night together with him.
I didn't catch his reply, my wolf was pacing restless, furious at Nikini. If she had her way, Nikini would be torn to bits by now.
I heard long strides heading towards my room and a loud knock soon after.
I got up from the bed sleepily and unlocked the door.
My eyes cleared up when I saw that it was Jax. He was already dressed and looked immaculate in a dashing black suit. His shiny blonde hair was neatly parted to the side and the masculine fragrance of his perfume clouded him. Looking at his angry features, I wondered how such a handsome werewolf could be this callous.
"Why are you not dressed? How can you attend to the guests with the way you look? You're ugly. I'll punish you if you get in the way of the Lycan king" He said, shouting at me.
"I just want…" I begin, wanting to explain myself.
"No excuses, go and clean yourself up, meet me there" He said, pushing me back as he stormed away from the room.

The annual gala is packed with werewolves from different packs as I climb up the steps. The Cloris hall is the biggest hall in the city and as usual, no expenses are spared for the gala. This year is no exception. There were no humans around. Getting here was strictly by invitation.
I felt a twinge in my chest when I looked around and saw people walking in twos. I slipped on a fox mask from a counter nearby and slipped unnoticed into the crowd. I was supposed to make an entrance with Jax to represent the Blood diamond pack but he had left the place before me.
I strained my eyes to locate him in the hall and I finally saw him. He is standing with other Alphas. All smiles and gentleman courtesy. Surprising how he manages to fool everyone with his oily suave personality.
I looked around to see where other Lunas were. I located them easily as they were the fanciest women in the hall. I had chosen my dress on a last minute whim without giving much thought to it. It was a dazzling red gown. Same as I had worn it three years back. I had used makeup to cover the dark circles around my eyes. A scarlet lipstick accentuated my sexy look.
"Hello, you all look amazing as usual" I said to the Lunas, feigning smiles as I greeted them brightly waving around.
"Hi there, Sophie" Few of them replied, pausing their gossip to respond.
They were all powerful women and knew it. Their aloofness and aura was different from the other pack members. I hated hanging with them at these functions since they tended to prattle about other people but it was a necessity. The Lunas had to seem united for the public image.
"Isn't that the Luna of the Blood diamond pack?" A redhead among them said, pointing behind me. I looked back to see that it was Nikini.
There was an uncomfortable silence around after that. Everyone knew my position because of how popular Jax was. The lady was just trying to get to me.
"This is the loveliest fruitcake I've had in ages. They're to die for, ladies try it out" A small brunette among us said, looking at me. She was trying to diffuse the atmosphere.
"No, thanks. I have to discuss something with Alpha Jax first" I mumbled as I left them. I heard whispers behind me. Even among other Lunas, I didn't fit in.
"My, my, my. Look what the cat dragged in. Your outfit is horrible, sis. You look like a slave when you stand with other Lunas."
I look up to see Nikini blocking my path. This was the first time I had seen her today since I heard her in the study.
"Leave my way, no matter how beautiful you look, you're not Luna and never will" I fired back at her.
"You've only become Luna because my family adopted you out of kindness. Otherwise, you'd be long gone. Anyway, you got your position by lying," She said, her eyes flashing in anger.
"What are you talking about, I never lied. Anyway, why am I arguing with you". I said, walking away from her and holding my dress up so I won't trip on it and fall.
I heard movements behind me. I looked back in time to catch Nikini's hand just as she wanted to slap me. I saw Jax from the corner of my eyes rush towards us while people stared at him. I released her hand while everyone was looking.
"Why are you bullying Nikini?" Jax queried me in a harsh tone.
Nikini chose that moment to be dramatic and swooned into his hands.
"My body hurts, Alpha. I don't know why she's jealous of my dress when she is Luna and she can have any dress she wants. She told me to change it and she hit me. It hurts" Nikini cried out, feigning pain.
"Your jealousy will be the death of you, Sophie. How could you hit your sister because of her dress" Jax said, glaring at me as he messaged the spot on Nikini's arm where she said I had hit her.
"You couldn't even ask me what happened. See, Nikini is smiling in your arms, she isn't hurt at all" I shout back, pointing at Nikini who chose that moment to wink at me.
"Don't hit her again," Jax said, pushing me back for the second time today. My hands flail helplessly looking for support just as I felt strong hands steady me from behind stopping my fall.
The whole place around us grew silent. Everyone's eyes were fixated on the person behind me. There's awe in their eyes too.
"It's the Lycan king Magnus Blackclaw" I heard someone whisper from the crowd.
I stood up hurriedly and looked back. I felt my breath hitched as I stared at the Lycan King in front of me.He was way younger than I expected. I had imagined an old graying king not this perfection in front of me. He was tall and majestic and there was a powerful magnetic aura that compelled respect radiating from him. Before now, I had thought Jax was the most handsome male werewolf. But he paled before Magnus. He had raven black hair just like mine which offset his pale complexion. His piercing blue eyes and regal air made him look older than he was. He blinked and I came back to my senses. I had been staring at him open-mouthed without saying anything."Umm, thank you for catching me. It's an honor to meet you finally, King Magnus" I quickly mumbled, wishing the ground would swallow me. I hoped he couldn't hear my heart racing from here.He nodded expressionlessly."Nice to meet you. I assume you're Sophie. Did a little research on you, always do that to know my hosts. Cloris hal
As I reached the house, panting and out of breath, I came to a stop at the sight before my eyes. I could hear my own heartbeat echoing rapidly in the silence, the weight of Jax's rejection heavy on my heart. I knew that what had transpired between King Magnus and me, regardless of its innocent nature, had irreversibly damaged my relationship with Jax but it didn't prepare me for what was before me.My belongings were strewn carelessly around the doorway. It was like a whirlwind had entered my room and deposited my things outside. I had an idea who the whirlwind was.I found him in his study engrossed in a book. He definitely heard my footsteps but feigned deaf ears to it."Why are all my belongings thrown outside? Some of them are fragile and are surely broken." I said."Isn't it obvious, I rejected you. We're divorced. There's no need to stay here anymore" He said, finally dragging his eyes away from the book."You're not innocent yourself" I said with sparks in my eyes, finally tire
I woke up the next day feeling refreshed and uncertain of where I was. My memory came back gradually as I yawned. The unfamiliar setting had confused me for a moment. I wasn't waking up in my bed. The Lycan king had carried me to the hotel he had booked for his stay here in the upper part of town.I looked around the expansive room, it exuded wealth and opulence. No doubt the stay here was very expensive. The sheets were so soft and had a feathery warmth to it. My wolf, Ryka was loving it as I felt our insides curl at the treatment we were receiving. It had been a long time I had slept this long. My failing marriage with Alpha Jax had always been on my mind these past days. I reflected on the events of the past day, my life had changed so quickly that it was becoming a blur in my mind. After the shocking twist at the grove, I had gone home to get my belongings. I expected Nikini to feel triumphant at getting Alpha Jax all to herself. That wasn't what had happened. If anything, she w
This should only be in fairy tales, I thought to myself as we got down from the limousine. The castle was straight out of a Gothic story. Its towering spires clawed at the darkening sky and was shrouded in an eerie mist that seemed to have settled over it for centuries. The black stone walls rose ominously from the earth, casting long, twisted shadows in the daylight."I know that look, it's ugly" King Magnus said with a chuckle, joining me to study the place."No, I wouldn't say that, more like Gothic" I said lamely trying to praise the place."Blackwater castle was built by the first Lycan King, King Grimwick. Not much has changed in the structure since then". He said, then turned to talk to the driver. He must have mind-linked his pack members because just then three young men opened the heavy metal doors of the castle which creaked open with an eerie groan, as if warning us of its mysterious depths. The entrance was adorned with grotesque stone gargoyles, their twisted forms addin
The massive doors swung open, revealing a hall that was as grand as it was intimidating. I looked sideways to see the guards' implacable faces. I took a hesitant step into the room, feeling like a rabbit surrounded by wolves. Gleaming tables were arranged neatly in three rows. They indicated that banquets were held here sometimes. One of the guards pushed me forward roughly."You bow in front of royalty," He hissed at me."Treat her gently, she's yet to learn our ways" A high feminine voice piped from the far end of the hall. I realized my mistake, in my eagerness to study the hall, I had failed to recognize the people sitting there. The lighting at their end was poor too, they saw more of me than I did of them. Slowly my wolf abilities made my eyesight get accustomed to the light and I could pick their outlines clearly. The Queen mother sat on a lavish throne-like chair with a regal air about her. She was a woman of striking beauty despite her age, her silver hair cascaded framed he
Magnus POV.Another sleepless night as usual. The rhythmic ticking of the clock in my room was the only sound around. It was early dawn of another day and I had not slept a wink because my mind was occupied. The events of the past days has been nothing short of unexpected. I had gone to the Blood Diamonds pack for the Gala event alone but had unexpectedly brought back a mate. The Blood diamond council had been surprised but no one had been more surprised than I was. I took the decision in a spilt second. I'm usually more logical than that. My business successes and conquest as the Lycan King are a result of thinking through on decisions before acting on them. I had first taken an interest in her at the party. Even then, I had seen the tension in their marriage. I saw it as providence or the workings of the moon goddess when he later rejected her.My first instinct when Jax had talked insolently to me outside the party was to rip out his throat. Elena had been the only person who coul
The days had been monotonous, nobody told me that a castle could be so boring. But then, I was always inside so I couldn't complain much. For the past two days, my routine was mostly reading novel paperbacks, eating and sleeping. It was the early hours of the morning and I knew that my maid would soon be here to get me started on my day. I had asked the housekeeper for another maid since I couldn't get along with the previous one. I had not gotten into details about it, I just told her I wasn't comfortable with her. Whatever her fault, I didn't want Daisy sacked because of me. The new girl, Sarah was more polite and quiet. We had gotten along just fine.Technically, there was no law against me going out, I just assumed I wasn't to leave. From what I had gathered, King Magnus was always busy. We didn't see much of each other which was strange for people getting married in a few days. But then, the circumstances surrounding our relationship was different.I got out of the bed and went
"You two know each other" King Magnus said as Luke and I were still transfixed on seeing ourselves."Yes," he mumbled. "I never thought I'll see her again."King Magnus looked at me and I knew he wanted an explanation. His eyes narrowed as he looked at both of us."We were childhood friends," Luke said before I could open my mouth. I nodded confirming his words.I knew I needed to add more details to what he said for his benefit but I was still stunned on seeing him. Life was so unfair."Right." King Magnus said. "I'll leave you two to catch up. Luke, show her around too. I need to finish up training," He said and walked back to the training room.We watched him go and I twisted a lock of my hair as I stood hesitant.I didn't want to be left alone with Luke, my insides were in a turmoil. His face had matured over the years to a more sharper profile but he still retained his boyish look."How are you…" I started to say to fill in the silence. It was strange just standing there."Not he
