The rain started at 6pm, just like her tears always did.

Amelia stood at her window, phone tight in her hand. The job offer letter was glowing on her laptop behind her — her dream, finally. Lagos in 3 weeks.

But her chest felt heavy, not happy.

She read Daniel's last message again. _Whenever you're ready._

He was being... kind. Too kind. And that kindness was making her miss him so much her stomach hurt.

She typed fast before she could change her mind: _Can we meet tonight? Café near the bridge. 7pm. Important._

He replied in 30 seconds: _I'll be there. Early._

*The Café*

Daniel was there at 6:50. Two coffees. Hers — milk, no sugar. He always remembered that stupid small thing.

The bell rang. Amelia came in, umbrella dripping, cream dress sticking to her legs a little. Beautiful. Tired.

He stood up too fast and almost knocked the coffee.

"Hello, Amelia."

"Hello, Daniel."

Silence. That painful, awkward silence between two people who used to talk over each other.

"You remembered," she whispered, looking at the coffee.

"Of course I remembered," he said, voice hoarse. "I forget a lot of things, but not how you like your coffee. Not the way you laugh when you're nervous."

She looked down, and a small, sad smile came.

"You remember the smallest things."

"I forget the big ones," he said quietly. "Like... how being scared of losing you made me push you away."

That hit her. Her throat tightened.

"I'm sorry," he said.

"For what?"

"For making you feel like you were not enough to choose. You should never have had to ask if you were important to me."

Her eyes filled instantly. "I was scared too, Daniel."

"Of what?"

"Of loving a man who would never be brave enough to choose me in front of his family."

He looked like someone slapped him. But he didn't look away.

*Then the truth.*

She took a deep breath. "I got the job. I'm accepting. I'm moving."

He swallowed. His hand shook around his cup.

"Good. You deserve it." His voice cracked. "I won't ask you to stay. Even if... even if it means I won't sleep for months because you are far."

A tear fell down her cheek. He didn't wipe it. He had learned not to touch without permission.

"Daniel... did you tell your family you would leave the business because of me?" she asked.

His face changed. Panic.

"Who told you?"

"Does it matter? Tell me the truth!"

He looked down. "Yes. I told my father I would leave. Not just because of you — because I want to live my own life."

She nodded, crying now. "You should have told me. Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because I didn't want you to carry my guilt!"

That was when she took out her phone. Her hand was shaking so bad.

She showed him the photograph.

Daniel beside Charlotte. His hand on her back. Smiling. The caption: *DANIEL HART AND CHARLOTTE BENNETT: A MATCH MADE FOR THE FUTURE?*

His blood left his face.

"Amelia, I can explain —"

"When was this?" Her voice was now loud. People looked.

"Three weeks ago. Business event. My father begged me to go."

"And you went! After everything! After your mother insulted me, after you told me you chose me — you went and stood beside her like... like a husband!"

"It was not like that!" He reached for her hand, she pulled back.

"Are there other things you didn't tell me because you decided I couldn't handle it?" She was shouting now, crying openly, not caring. "I'm always the last to know, Daniel! Always!"

Silence. Heavy rain outside.

Then she whispered the question that was killing her: "Is it true... your families planned your marriage to Charlotte even before you met me?"

He froze.

"Yes," he whispered, like it cost him his life. "Yes. Before I met you. My father and her father planned it. I never wanted it. I said no. But I... I never told you."

Amelia stepped back like he hit her. Her umbrella fell.

"What?" She pressed her hand to her chest, gasping. "You knew? All this time you knew you were supposed to marry her and you never told me? You let me tell you all my secrets, all my shame, and you kept this?"

"I thought if I refused, it would go away!" He was crying now too, openly. "I was wrong! I was so wrong, Amelia! I thought I was protecting us!"

"Protecting us by lying?" she screamed through tears. "You keep deciding what I can handle! You don't trust me!"

"I do trust you!"

"Then why does it feel like I'm loving a stranger?"

He had no answer. Just tears running down his face.

"I wanted tonight to be different," she sobbed, picking up her umbrella. "I wanted us to find a way."

"We can —"

"Wanting me to stay is not a reason to stay, Daniel!"

She turned and walked into the rain. She didn't open the umbrella.

Daniel stood under the streetlight, watching her disappear, rain soaking his blue shirt, the shirt she liked.

He finally understood: Honesty is not when it's convenient. It's when it's uncomfortable.

And he had failed.

*That Night*

Amelia didn't sleep. She stared at the job offer.

Then she clicked *ACCEPT*.

Her hands shook, but her heart felt calm for the first time.

She still loved him. God, she still loved him.

But she would not pause her life waiting for a man to learn how to be honest.

She was moving to Lagos. With or without Daniel.

And if he ever wanted her again, this time HE would have to come to Lagos and prove it.

Not with words. With action

  • A love written in the rain   chapter 10 : Fifty thousand dollars to leave my son

The rain didn't stop all night. It never stopped in this part of town. It beat on my small zinc roof like it was trying to break in and drown everything I owned.I didn't sleep. I couldn't. I sat on the cold floor of my one room, back against the wall, suitcase open in front of me. Inside it was everything: one good gown, two old jeans, three tops, and a printed paper that felt heavier than everything else. My job offer letter. AMELIA JOHNSON - OFFER FOR JUNIOR DESIGN ROLE, LONDON OFFICE. START DATE: ONE WEEK.One week. I had changed it myself last night. I couldn't stay one more month in this city watching Daniel Hart marry another woman. I had to leave in one week. Even if it killed me.My phone screen was on. 14 missed calls. 23 messages. All from one name. Daniel."Amelia please pick up.""Amelia where are you?""Don't do this. Don't take that job."I didn't reply. What was I supposed to say? That I still loved him? That every time it rained I still thought of our first kiss unde

  • A love written in the rain   chapter 8:The courage to choose

Amelia used to think love was supposed to make you happy.Stupid, right? Now she sat on the cold floor beside her window, back against the wall, watching rain beat the glass. Her chest was tight. Like someone was sitting on it.She couldn't even cry properly again. The tears just came and came, silent. She wiped her cheek with her sleeve and her sleeve was already wet.Love was not enough. She was learning that now.You can love somebody with your whole life, and still feel alone beside them. You can love somebody and still feel like you are begging to be chosen. She unlocked her phone. Daniel. No call. No text._He didn't even try._That thought cut her. She pressed the phone to her chest."Fight for me na," she whispered to the empty room. "Just try."But he said he didn't want her to feel like she had to fight the world to be with him. So he let her go.God, why did letting go have to feel like kindness?*The Email That Saved Her*Morning. Her eyes were swollen. She looked ugly, sh

  • A love written in the rain   chapter 7: Dinner with Thomas

Thomas had chosen a restaurant Amelia could never afford on her own salary. The moment she walked in, she felt out of place. The lights were dim and warm, candles flickered on every table, and soft jazz played in the background. It was the kind of place where couples leaned close and held hands, where laughter was quiet and intimate.Amelia looked down at her dress. It was her best one, a simple blue dress she had bought two years ago for a wedding. Her shoes pinched at the toes because she had walked too much that day. She felt like a child playing dress-up in her mother's clothes."You look lovely," Thomas said when he saw her. And he meant it. His eyes were warm and familiar, the same eyes that had looked at her every day in university.Thomas was safe. He had always been safe. He remembered that she hated sweet cocktails and always ordered lemon water instead. He remembered that she always wanted a window seat because she liked watching people walk past. He remembered how she took

  • A love written in the rain   chapter 6:The things we don't say

Amelia Bennett had never believed that one lunch could change anything. It was only lunch, after all. Two people sitting across from each other in a small Italian restaurant down the street from Hayes & Co., sharing pasta and talking about ordinary things. There was no grand confession, no unexpected kiss, no promise that would change the direction of their lives.Yet, when Amelia returned to the office that afternoon, her hands were still shaking as she tried to type. She sat at her desk and stared at her computer screen, but she could not remember what she was supposed to be doing. Her cheeks felt warm. Her heart was beating too fast. For the first time since she had started working at Hayes & Co., she had spent time with Daniel Hayes without feeling that she needed to prove herself. He had not asked her about the Riverside project. He had not corrected her report or given her a list of tasks to complete before 5pm. Instead, he had listened to her stories. Really listened. When she
