Amelia had always believed that the truth, no matter how painful, was better than a beautiful lie.

But as she sat beside her bedroom window that evening, the fifty thousand dollars still lying on her bed untouched, she wondered if some truths were simply too heavy to carry.

The rain was back. Heavy. Angry. It slid down the glass like it was crying with her.

On her phone, the two photos were still open. Daniel at the airport with two suitcases, boarding pass to London in his hand. And his father, Chief Hart, walking towards the same gate with security guards.

Gate closing in 10 minutes. That was 12 hours ago. She didn't know what happened. She didn't answer Charlotte's message. She didn't call Daniel. She just sat there, frozen.

Did he board? Did his father catch him? Did he lose everything because of her?

Daniel had lied to her.

Not about loving her. She knew he loved her. But he had hidden the meeting with Charlotte's family. He knew for months that his family wanted him to marry Charlotte Bennett, and he said nothing. He let her hold his hand under the rain while he was already half-engaged to someone else.

She kept seeing his face when she asked him, "Are you marrying Charlotte?" He looked guilty. Like a child caught stealing. He opened his mouth, then closed it. He said, "It's not what you think, Amelia."

But it was exactly what she thought.

She wiped her eyes hard and reached for the manuscript on her desk. London Publishing House. Junior Designer. The job Mrs. Hart said she would destroy with one call. The job she had to sign tonight or lose forever.

Every sentence in the manuscript said "love" and every "love" reminded her of Daniel.

The way he held her hand under the rain at the old bookshop bus stop.

The way he said, "If the whole world disappears, I will still be happy as long as you are beside me."

The way he looked at her when he thought she wasn't watching.

"Why did you have to make it so difficult to love you, Daniel?" she whispered to the rain.

Her phone rang. Loud in the quiet room.

For one foolish second, her heart jumped. Daniel.

It wasn't.

It was Sophie. Her best friend since university. The only person who knew how poor she really was.

"Amelia? Have you seen T*****r? Daniel Hart is trending!" Sophie shouted.

"What? Why?"

"His father posted a statement! 'My son Daniel Hart is no longer affiliated with Hart Group due to personal misconduct. His accounts have been suspended.' Amelia, what did he do? Did he really leave his company for you?"

Amelia's blood went cold. So his father DID catch him. He was cut off. Just like Mrs. Hart threatened.

"I'm fine," Amelia said, voice breaking.

"Don't do that! Don't tell me you're fine when I can hear your heart breaking through the phone!"

Amelia finally broke. She cried. Loud, ugly crying that she had been holding since morning.

"I trusted him, Sophie! I thought we were building something real! But how can I trust someone who hides his engagement from me? He let me love him while his mother was already planning his wedding to another woman!"

Sophie was quiet. Then she said, softly, "You don't have to decide tonight if you hate him or love him. But you have to decide if you will sign that London job or let his mother win."

Amelia looked at the London acceptance letter on her desk.

For the first time that evening, she stopped crying.

She picked up a pen. Her hand was shaking. And she signed.

AMELIA JOHNSON. In big, angry letters.

It was a small signature, but it felt like war. Whatever happened between her and Daniel, she would not let the Hart family destroy her dreams. Not even the man she loved.

She would go to London. Even if Daniel was now poor. Even if he was on that plane. Even if he hated her.

Across the city, in a cold, empty study, Daniel sat alone.

His phone lay on the desk. Amelia's name on the screen. 14 missed calls from yesterday, still no reply. He had written three messages and deleted every one.

"I'm sorry. My father caught me at the airport. I lost everything."

"Please let me explain. I love you."

"I am at the bus stop where we first kissed. In the rain."

None of them was enough.

A quiet knock. His mother entered. No smile now.

"You haven't eaten since the airport incident," she said.

"I'm not hungry."

"Is this about Amelia? Or about the fact that your father has frozen all your accounts?"

Daniel looked up sharply, eyes red.

"Did you know he was going to humiliate me at the airport, Mother? With security guards? Like I am a criminal?"

"We thought you would come to your senses."

"I love Amelia! I have never asked you to approve of every decision, but I expected you to respect my right to make them!"

His mother sighed. "We only wanted what was best for you, Daniel. Charlotte's family..."

"What is best for me makes me miserable! Don't you see?"

His mother was silent for a long time. Then she said something that changed everything.

"And what will you do now that you have nothing? No money. No house. No company. Will Amelia still love you when you are poor like her?"

Daniel stood. He took his phone. He walked to the window. Outside, it was raining again. London rain, he thought. He would follow her to London even if he had to sweep floors.

"I will tell her the whole truth. And then I will let HER decide if she can forgive a poor man. Not you."

The next morning, Amelia arrived at the London Publishing office early. Her eyes were swollen. She had the signed letter in her bag.

The receptionist smiled. "Amelia? Someone left this for you yesterday. He waited for 6 hours in the rain. We told him you went home."

A small cream envelope. No name. Soaked at the edges from rain.

Inside, handwritten, ink smudged by rain:

Amelia,

I lost everything at the airport yesterday. My father caught me. I have no company, no money now. Maybe my mother is right, maybe you won't want me now that I am poor.

But I am still at the little café near the old bookshop at 6pm today. In the same rain where you first kissed me. If you don't come, I will understand you chose London without me.

Daniel.

Amelia read it three times. Her hands were shaking so much the paper tore slightly.

He waited 6 hours in the rain. Poor now. Just like her.

At 5:30, she stood outside the office. Rain was falling hard.

She could go home. Sign for London. Forget him. Be safe.

Or she could walk into the rain to find a man who now had nothing.

She walked. Straight into the rain. Towards the old bookshop.

Because some truths are painful, yes. But some loves are worth getting wet for.

"Will Amelia forgive a poor Daniel? Or will she choose London? Comment POOR or LONDON!"

  • A love written in the rain   chapter 10 : Fifty thousand dollars to leave my son

The rain didn't stop all night. It never stopped in this part of town. It beat on my small zinc roof like it was trying to break in and drown everything I owned.I didn't sleep. I couldn't. I sat on the cold floor of my one room, back against the wall, suitcase open in front of me. Inside it was everything: one good gown, two old jeans, three tops, and a printed paper that felt heavier than everything else. My job offer letter. AMELIA JOHNSON - OFFER FOR JUNIOR DESIGN ROLE, LONDON OFFICE. START DATE: ONE WEEK.One week. I had changed it myself last night. I couldn't stay one more month in this city watching Daniel Hart marry another woman. I had to leave in one week. Even if it killed me.My phone screen was on. 14 missed calls. 23 messages. All from one name. Daniel."Amelia please pick up.""Amelia where are you?""Don't do this. Don't take that job."I didn't reply. What was I supposed to say? That I still loved him? That every time it rained I still thought of our first kiss unde

  • A love written in the rain   chapter 9:The Truth We Never spoke

The rain started at 6pm, just like her tears always did.Amelia stood at her window, phone tight in her hand. The job offer letter was glowing on her laptop behind her — her dream, finally. Lagos in 3 weeks. But her chest felt heavy, not happy. She read Daniel's last message again. _Whenever you're ready._He was being... kind. Too kind. And that kindness was making her miss him so much her stomach hurt. She typed fast before she could change her mind: _Can we meet tonight? Café near the bridge. 7pm. Important._He replied in 30 seconds: _I'll be there. Early._*The Café*Daniel was there at 6:50. Two coffees. Hers — milk, no sugar. He always remembered that stupid small thing. The bell rang. Amelia came in, umbrella dripping, cream dress sticking to her legs a little. Beautiful. Tired. He stood up too fast and almost knocked the coffee."Hello, Amelia.""Hello, Daniel."Silence. That painful, awkward silence between two people who used to talk over each other."You remembered," she w

  • A love written in the rain   chapter 8:The courage to choose

Amelia used to think love was supposed to make you happy.Stupid, right? Now she sat on the cold floor beside her window, back against the wall, watching rain beat the glass. Her chest was tight. Like someone was sitting on it.She couldn't even cry properly again. The tears just came and came, silent. She wiped her cheek with her sleeve and her sleeve was already wet.Love was not enough. She was learning that now.You can love somebody with your whole life, and still feel alone beside them. You can love somebody and still feel like you are begging to be chosen. She unlocked her phone. Daniel. No call. No text._He didn't even try._That thought cut her. She pressed the phone to her chest."Fight for me na," she whispered to the empty room. "Just try."But he said he didn't want her to feel like she had to fight the world to be with him. So he let her go.God, why did letting go have to feel like kindness?*The Email That Saved Her*Morning. Her eyes were swollen. She looked ugly, sh

  • A love written in the rain   chapter 7: Dinner with Thomas

Thomas had chosen a restaurant Amelia could never afford on her own salary. The moment she walked in, she felt out of place. The lights were dim and warm, candles flickered on every table, and soft jazz played in the background. It was the kind of place where couples leaned close and held hands, where laughter was quiet and intimate.Amelia looked down at her dress. It was her best one, a simple blue dress she had bought two years ago for a wedding. Her shoes pinched at the toes because she had walked too much that day. She felt like a child playing dress-up in her mother's clothes."You look lovely," Thomas said when he saw her. And he meant it. His eyes were warm and familiar, the same eyes that had looked at her every day in university.Thomas was safe. He had always been safe. He remembered that she hated sweet cocktails and always ordered lemon water instead. He remembered that she always wanted a window seat because she liked watching people walk past. He remembered how she took

  • A love written in the rain   chapter 6:The things we don't say

Amelia Bennett had never believed that one lunch could change anything. It was only lunch, after all. Two people sitting across from each other in a small Italian restaurant down the street from Hayes & Co., sharing pasta and talking about ordinary things. There was no grand confession, no unexpected kiss, no promise that would change the direction of their lives.Yet, when Amelia returned to the office that afternoon, her hands were still shaking as she tried to type. She sat at her desk and stared at her computer screen, but she could not remember what she was supposed to be doing. Her cheeks felt warm. Her heart was beating too fast. For the first time since she had started working at Hayes & Co., she had spent time with Daniel Hayes without feeling that she needed to prove herself. He had not asked her about the Riverside project. He had not corrected her report or given her a list of tasks to complete before 5pm. Instead, he had listened to her stories. Really listened. When she
