Xavier’s POV

The fire outside had long since died, but its ghost still clung to the air. It clung to the ashes on the courtyard stones, to the smoke stained windows, to the people hovering around as they tried their best to salvage what they could, and most of all, to me.

The council’s words hadn’t left my head. If anything, they echoed louder than the crack of burning wood, replaying every word meant to cut. They'd called me all manner of things, and even though at one point in my life I'd heard those words, something about it felt strange this time.

Whether or not it had something to do with the fact that they came because I was closer to my revenge and ultimate plan, I had no idea. All I knew, was my victory was sure and I would be a fool if I failed now.

They could call me whatever they wanted. Reckless, dangerous, emotional or even a man ruled by obsession.

I didn't care, all I cared for was the throne and Lyra.

I sat behind my desk, the parchment from Cassian’s earlier d

  • A night with my ex-husband’s step brother    Chapter 130

Lyra's POV When I'd woken up earlier today, best believe this wasn't how I thought the day would pan out. Yes, the dream that pulled me back to reality was a harsh wake up call, but somehow, and for some strange reason, I actually expected that things would go well, eventually. But I was nothing short of a fool to think like that. I lost track of time after the little outburst in the council chambers. Hell , it had been hours since it happened, but I just couldn't get it out of my mind. The sun was high up in the sky, dragging light across my window panes like it wanted to set the entire palace on fire. Now that I thought about it, it didn't sound that bad. My chambers were quiet, but the quiet didn’t feel like peace, it felt like the kind that follows disaster. I hadn’t eaten, and I wasn't hungry . Every time I closed my eyes, or try to distract myself , I saw Xavier’s hand around his brother’s throat, the look in his eyes when he met mine before walking away.By the time the

Lyra's POV The silence that followed his words didn’t feel like silence at all. It felt like a storm waiting to tear the walls apart. In the couple of times I'd seen Xavier mad or about to get mad,I always told myself that that was the worst one, but this time, with him standing in front of me, I just knew that whatever he was about to unleash wouldnt be like any other. The only sound came from the torches, their flames crackling in uneven rhythms as if even they were unsure whether to keep burning or fizzle out for Xavier’s anger to shine through. Emily’s breathing was uneven now. In the blink of an eye, it had gone from steady and confident, to shallow and quick, and her wrists twisted uselessly in Xavier’s grip. The fear that had flickered earlier was growing, spreading through her eyes until it drowned everything else.“Tell them,” Xavier said again, quieter this time. “Tell them what you told me last night.”“I told you nothing,” Emily hissed, trying to wrench herself free.

  • A night with my ex-husband’s step brother    Chapter 128

Lyra’s POV The noise woke me before the sun did. At first, I thought I was dreaming. The sound of boots pounding down the hall, the sharp bark of orders thrown into the air and the metallic clash of something heavy striking stone, they were all too real, but that was what dreams felt like right? They were like an alternate universe that disappeared the moment you woke up, but when I opened my eyes, the echoes didn’t fade. They grew louder instead, and that was my first sign that something was wrong, horribly wrong somewhere. Without so much as a second thought, I threw off the blanket. My heart raced as I struggled to put on some clothes, to at least look presentable. I might not know what was waiting outside, but one thing I wasn't ready to do was underestimate how quickly things could go from a zero to a hundred. Outside my door, the chaos moved like a storm. Xavier’s men were everywhere, running, shouting, and dragging weapons that gleamed under the torchlight. I caught one

  • A night with my ex-husband’s step brother    Chapter 127

Lyra's POV The door had been closed for hours, and with Xavier, Cassian and Emily on the other side, it wasn't exactly a good sign. I tried to keep still, but I couldn't. My fingers were quivering, and my chest seemed to be thumping harder than ever. Beads of sweat had formed at the top of my head again, I'd lost count of how many times I'd wiped at them with my sleeves, but they just kept on coming back. It didn't help that my stomach was constantly churning too, and my breathing exercises weren't doing anything to help. I hated it, hated every bit of it. If there was one thing my body was screaming right now, it was the probability that things weren't going well, and if things went out of hand, the possibility of me doing anything to stop it, was incredibly low. I’d lost count of how many times I paced the length of the corridor, back and forth, each step carving a deeper line in the stone beneath my feet. The air around me was heavy, not with smoke this time, but with someth

Xavier’s POV The room was cold. Too cold for midnight, too cold for a woman who had once smiled as if the sun itself bent for her. I wasn't Emily's biggest fan, hell, I probably hated her guts more than anyone else, but I just couldn't shake off the eerie feeling that clung to her. It resurfaced Everytime I shot her a glance, whether she was aware of it or not. There was just something off about her, and I wasn't just saying that because I'd caught her in the crime scene, or because this was literally the second time I was locking her up in my custody. The guards had left minutes ago, and yet the air still carried the faint clink of chains. Emily sat in the middle of the room, here wrists bound, hair matted with soot, and the blood on her lip dried to a sharp line.Cassian leaned against the far wall, silent and watchful. I wanted to know what he was thinking , but I didn't want to speak, and I knew he didn't want to, at least not in front of her. We needed to know what we were

  • A night with my ex-husband’s step brother    Chapter 125

Lyra’s POV The air outside was thick again, heavier than when I’d entered his office. You would think that with my last run in with fire, I would have gotten used to it, or maybe, not be too scared of the stuff, but you couldn't be any more wrong. I didn’t need anyone to tell me where the smoke came from, I could already smell it. It was acrid, sharp, and far too familiar to pass as an accident. My legs moved faster than I knew they could go. Hell, it even took my mind a couple of minutes to catch up. By the time we reached the lower wing, the scent had settled into my lungs like a curse. The messenger’s quarters were half engulfed, the fire clawing its way up the walls in jagged streaks. Servants shouted, buckets clattered, and soldiers darted back and forth, their faces streaked with soot. I wasn't a fire expert, but even I knew that no amount of water could douse the flames licking all around us. Xavier moved through the chaos like the world belonged to him. He didn’t shout,
