The Past

*******

Carly

I ran out of the cab after paying and skimmed through everywhere, hoping I wasn’t followed.

My clothes were drenched from having to run down the street to get a cab. I wasn’t supposed to be out, I was locked up and guarded, but I sneaked out through the housekeeper.

God knows what will happen to her when Father wakes up.

But I needed to deliver the letter no matter what. I knew my fate already, but maybe, just maybe, something will happen.

Arthur´s family was also as powerful as mine, he could help. Any choice was better than the one I've always been in.

I have asked the cab to drop me off some distance away from school. Though it was getting darker each minute, I could see my school gate from afar as I waited for Liam.

We were in our senior year, and the school had organized night study for us, and misconduct wasn’t allowed.

I grew restless each minute I waited for him. Panic setting in every second, I see cars approaching.

I held tightly to my little bag, which contained the envelope I had written before leaving home.

I was starting to regret choosing this place as it was too open, but it was the only place I could think of, as I didn’t have another choice of time.

“Carly!”

I turned, looking across the street as I heard Liam yell.

He ran down, umbrella in his right hand, as he crossed the road. He pushed the umbrella towards me upon reaching me, but I moved it back to him as his body was now vulnerable.

“Why didn’t you come with an umbrella, you badly want to get cold!” He scolded.

This time, he gave me the umbrella, then proceeded to clean my hair, before dusting off water from my clothes.

This moment would have felt warm to me, but that wasn’t the reason I was here. I handed the umbrella to him and held his hands.

“Liam, you have to help me deliver this to Arthur,” I rushed to open my bag, taking out the letter, I handed it over to him.

He looked confused as he took it. “I've been trying to reach him, but it isn’t going,” I spoke.

A car beeped from behind, and I turned, checking if it was one from the mansions, but it wasn’t. I sighed in relief.

“Hey, hey,” Liam held my face. “What is going on here? I thought you said you were on a family vacation. But it doesn’t look like it.” He stared at me, his gaze searching for something. He was concerned.

I wish I could tell him what was wrong, but I couldn’t.

“I will tell you everything later, but now. Promise me you will hand this to Arthur. You will keep it safe and hand it over to only him.” I spoke, pleading.

“Oh, oh, what could be inside? I thought both of you were breaking up, but I doubt with your little love letters.” He teased, wanting to open the envelope.

My eyes opened, and I held his hands.

“The letter can't be seen by anyone except Arthur, Liam.” I pushed back my hair. Maybe it was the heavy rain that wet the earth, because I felt my facade breaking as I stared at him.

“Please just hand it over to Arthur, that's all I asked of you. I will tell you everything later, I promise you, but for now I need to go.”

I turned to leave, but Liam held me.

“I don't know what is going on, but you must stay safe to tell me everything that is happening.”

I nodded, forcing a smile, to ease him of his worry. He released my hands, and I walked to the road. Stopping a cab, I entered.

****

I walked shakily through the rain after the cab dropped me. Our huge gate opened as I slid my card across it.

The cab couldn’t go further for security purposes. I could only run, praying Father wasn’t awake. Praying housekeeper Jane was waiting at the back door.

I opened the back door, but she wasn’t there. The agreement was for her to wait for me at the door.

Something was wrong, yet I took a step inside, hoping luck would be on my side just for the night, luck that she went inside to pick something.

But when has there ever been such luck for me?

Father sat on the couch, keeper Jane knelt on the cold floor, her face bruised, and I knew Father must have hit her. She looked at me, her eyes pleading as if telling me to leave, but where could I go?

Father just had to make a call, and I would be back here again.

I walked towards them and bent down to help keeper Jane up.

“You shouldn’t harm others for my sake, Father. Keeper Jane did nothing wrong.” I gathered the courage to speak.

“You should leave,” I said to her, but she shook her head.

“Everything will be fine,” I whispered to her, not only for her but for me also. She nodded and left.

Father paid us no glance, his eyes focused on his phone.

“Where have you been?” He asked, standing up suddenly. I took a step back as he stepped closer to me.

“I went to school,” I said, my heart beating loudly.

“School this late? Didn't I ask you not to set foot there anymore!” He yelled, his step quicker towards me.

Knowing what was next, I ran for my room. That was the only place I could escape from the monster. But once again, luck failed me as I'm jerked backward.

Present.

I swallowed, clenching my chest as I tried to breathe, but I was finding it difficult. The rain suddenly started pouring, as if it wanted to comfort me, but it wasn’t.

Pain jolted my stomach as I held it. I gasped, my heart tightening as memories unfolded slowly with tears streaming down my face.

“Shhhh, calm down. It's fine, everything is going to be fine.” I muttered in between tears like a mantra again and again.

I laughed, the rain taking in my voice. It was amusing how seeing him again could take me back to the state I had worked so hard to leave behind.

Why was everything coming back, after all I've done to be this way? Why was I still stupidly affected only by seeing him?

“Why?” I asked, looking up at the sky as the rain dropped on my face.

  • A Second Chance With Arthur?   Chapter 139

Epilogue Three years later Carly I smiled looking at the TV. Being the weekend, I’ve stayed away from work, leaving everything to Raphael and Gina. While, my relationship with Raphael had improved since that night, I couldn’t trust him fully because of his father and his mother, but I could leave him to some things, especially with Gina. My phone beeped, and I looked at the messages on the screen. Speaking of the devil, it was Gina. “I hope a certain someone is enjoying her stay at home, after leaving me with a prick of a brother to take care of the company.” I typed. “Come on, Gina. Don’t be dramatic. I just didn’t come to work for a day.” I sent it to her. “Whatever you say. Anyways, I hope my sweet boy is doing well. Tell him, I will be with him soon. I miss him so much.” I smiled at the text and typed. “Sure sure. Right now, he is hell-bent on sleeping most of the time because of Arthur. He is missing him.” I laughed at that. “He is spoilt, too spoilt by his fa

Arthur “So, did you ever tell her?” I was trying to understand everything and there was a silent anger. Anger at being ignorant all these years. Anger because I never bothered to look for Carly. Anger because I’d dwelled into other things, thinking that she didn’t want me anymore. Not knowing I was her string to breaking. I should have held Laim down and made him tell me all about her after meeting outside the state. But I had assumed Carly had forgotten me. I wished she had, but instead she was fighting for her life. “No. Till now, Carly believed you saw the letter but never got back to her. She believed you hated her and abandoned her and for this hatred, she had stayed away from you and wanted the wedding null.”I wanted to laugh. Now, I know the reason for her shock the first time we met, the dread that covered her eyes. “I wanted to tell her. But I stopped trying, because hating you was the only thing Carly was holding on to, and telling her would make her go far from me. I

  • A Second Chance With Arthur?   Chapter 137

Arthur My hands clenched painfully around the steering wheel. The doctor’s words lingered in my head.“As I said before, it’s a high-profile drug, only distributed to a small group as it’s costly. Whoever is taking this must have gone through something critical to resolve to take this. It has a dreadful side effect. According to my doctor, it helps numb painful psychological memories and also prevent it. You said the person fainted right? I’m afraid this is not the first time and it’s a side effect of the drugs. I wasn't allowed in fully but I’m sure of this. Can you tell me other symptoms the person might have?” I had explained to him, then left his office. Something dreadful must have happened to Carly. Anything that makes one want to erase their memories has to be critical and I couldn’t help but feel it had to do with older Harrington words. He said I had created damage to Carly before. How? What happened years ago? After I moved back to the state on my grandfather’s command,

  • A Second Chance With Arthur?   Chapter 136

Arthur It has been a day now yet Cafly wasn't waking. The doctors have said everything was fine. I sighed watching her breathe softly. Her mom had left a while ago, she had cried, then thanked me. But it wasn't needed., because Carly was mine and it was my duty to keep her safe. Liam had left with Gina too. Things don't feel good between them but they aren't chewing each other's heads off. “You should wake up soon, Carly.” I kissed her hand. The drugs administered were impressive. Even though it was just a day, the cuts on her skin weren't as overbearing as before. How I wanted to go back to that container and rip James's fingers off for causing her harm. “I miss you.” I raised my head at Carly’s voice, meeting her face. My eyes widened. “Carly.” I rose, moving closer to her. Heavy sigh of relief coursed through me. My heart tightened seeing her eyes. My hands brushed against her face and she leaned into my touch, her eyes on me. “I missed you so much. I thought something happe

  • A Second Chance With Arthur?   Chapter 135

Arthur I entered the container where James was tied. Yes, a container because we were in the middle of the seas, inside my private ship, a perfect place to torture him without the intervention of his accomplice. Yes, I have figured that he had one. One that thought to set up everything in the werehouse burning. That warehouse wasn’t public property. It was private and secluded. If he was able to get access then it was someone of high earn and not to talk about the camera’s setup, then the bomb that followed. Something was missing and I knew it was linked to his accomplice. The light in the dark shone on James. He was tied to a chair in the middle, his legs and hands bound. His face is filled with cuts, his lips burst open. His eyes swallowed even when closed. His clothes are filled with blood, one that had disgusted others but to me, I wanted more and I was going to give him. Not from my boys beating him up, no, that was for wasting their time. “I can see you are already enjoyin

  • A Second Chance With Arthur?   Chapter 134

Carly It couldn't be true. Arthur couldn't have been there when the building exploded right? He couldn't have died. I allowed the tears flow down my cheeks. Still in disbelief of what I saw. I licked my dried lips, my eyes blurry from too many tears, yet it didn't stop. I needed to leave. I glanced at the little window again.Even though my body could fit there, what were the chances of me being able to get there and then, my eyes met the chain fixed on my leg. I closed my eyes, helpless at the situation again. Everything was painful. From my face to my body, and my stomach. I placed my hands on my stomach, hoping the pain had subsided. A pain that started after watching that video. The door opened and I snapped my head to it, James walked in, a plastic bag in hand filled with something. A shape of bottles. “I figured we should drink to Arthur burning into ashes or flesh. Very soon, the whole world would be informed of his passing. But before then, let's celebrate.” He sat on th
