“Boss!”
The door barged open, and James walked in, in a rush. I frowned at his behavior.
“Boss, did you see what is going on?” He pointed to the tablet with him. Anything that could make James so anxious is worth worrying over. I beckoned for him to hand the tablet to me, and he did.
“Arthur Wilder and Carly Harrington are the trending topics of today. Both powerful CEOs are suddenly tied down by an engagement, and this is causing uproar in the business world. Thou…”
My brows furrowed the more I looked.
“From your expression, it seems you know nothing of these. This couldn’t be fake news as major news stations are carrying it.”
Carly couldn’t agree to an engagement when she had never accepted my proposal to work together. It was confusing as to why there was suddenly news on this. I rubbed my hair, confused with each moment.
“Why aren’t you saying anything, boss? Do you know of this? If they are spreading false news, it’s better to deal with it now before it causes damage.”
I didn’t bother answering him. I took out my phone and dialed my grandfather. He was the only one I could think of capable of doing such. But only he couldn’t decide, which means someone from Carly's side had agreed to it.
“Hello, my dear grandson,” His voice rang out, filled with excitement.
“Grandfather, what did you do this time?”
“What do you mean by what I did? You should learn to be straightforward, son. This old man can no longer guess,”
I took a deep sigh, knowing what he was up to, “My engagement to Carly Harrington, you are responsible for it?”
He chuckled. The sound of him moving around resonated through the line. “While it’s a good match, you should have told me that you and Carly once had something, then I would have fixed your engagement a long time ago, instead of you fooling around. And also, now that you are engaged, let go of that girl called Olivia or whatever!”
His words came out too fast, and my brows furrowed. How did he know Carly and me once had something? It was just between us two, and Carly wasn’t one to talk.
“Grandfather,” I called slowly, still processing my thoughts. “ How did you get to know this?”
“Mr Trevor, Carly’s father, came to me. He pleaded with me that Carly liked you and you both had a thing years ago. I was surprised at first, but I knew both of you attended the same school, as my boys had once reported you had been close to a girl, and I never thought to check who. Now, everything is perfect, and I don’t have to worry about you anymore. It’s a good thing that such lady has love for you, you should be thankful.”
I jerked my head back, the strong urge to rub my eyes came, and I did. This isn’t right. Carly never had a crush on me, it was the other way around, be it years ago or now.
He continued. “Now that your engagement is around the corner, you should take time off to rekindle old feelings. Hmm, I’ve to go to the garden now so I can’t spend more time with you.” He ended the call.
“What did he say?” James asked immediately, his eyes curious as he looked at me.
“It was grandfather,”
I didn’t know how to feel. Never in my dreams did I expect this. The event of few days ago flashed in my eyes. After a long time of wanting to meet Lylah again, that day at the parking lot was the first time I saw her fully. She looked tired. I knew she had cried before putting on her makeup. She always had that look, and I was glad that it didn’t change. But what I wasn’t expecting was the look she gave me when she saw me.
Terror, fear, and pain graced her beautiful eyes before she turned and ran inside her car, driving off immediately. Those looks have haunted me, knowing it was directed at me. But why? I couldn’t place my hands on the reason. She couldn’t possibly still hate me for that night.
“But why would Ms Carly agree to it? I thought she blacklisted our company as they always refuse to work with us and….” His eyes suddenly widen. “Could that be the reason why the M&M project is under consideration? Usually, they reject it immediately. Wow, boss. Congratulations!” His voice suddenly turned cheerful.
I paid no heed to him as I got lost in my thoughts. I needed to know the reason she had agreed to it. The girl who would never agree back then couldn’t suddenly change her mind to spend her life with me.
“Call her company, I want to meet her.”
“Who?”
I glared at him, and he laughed awkwardly.
“Oh, Ms Carly. “
He picked up his phone and dialed it. The phone rang.
“This is N&R call line. Please tell me your request,” A female voice sounded from the line. James looked at me, and I gave him a look to continue.
“I’m calling from cordisR top desk. The CEO would like to meet with Ms Carly.”
“Oh,” The voice spoke in realization. “Please hold on a minute, let me inform the top desk, please stay on the line for that.”
The line grew silent, and we waited.
“Oh, sorry for the delay. I’m sorry again to inform you that Ms Carly is busy at the moment, so she can’t be reached. If there is an important message, I could help you deliver it.”
It wasn’t that she couldn’t be reached. She must have been too shocked and decided not to speak to me, but I was tired of waiting for her to reach out. From now on, I was going to take the lead.
I waved my hand for James to hand over the phone.
“Tell her, I’ll be there in a few minutes.”
“What! I mean, she isn’t available and….”
I ended the call. “Get the car ready,”
James looked at me, surprised, but he knew not to question me. He nodded and left the room.
Epilogue Three years later Carly I smiled looking at the TV. Being the weekend, I’ve stayed away from work, leaving everything to Raphael and Gina. While, my relationship with Raphael had improved since that night, I couldn’t trust him fully because of his father and his mother, but I could leave him to some things, especially with Gina. My phone beeped, and I looked at the messages on the screen. Speaking of the devil, it was Gina. “I hope a certain someone is enjoying her stay at home, after leaving me with a prick of a brother to take care of the company.” I typed. “Come on, Gina. Don’t be dramatic. I just didn’t come to work for a day.” I sent it to her. “Whatever you say. Anyways, I hope my sweet boy is doing well. Tell him, I will be with him soon. I miss him so much.” I smiled at the text and typed. “Sure sure. Right now, he is hell-bent on sleeping most of the time because of Arthur. He is missing him.” I laughed at that. “He is spoilt, too spoilt by his fa
Arthur “So, did you ever tell her?” I was trying to understand everything and there was a silent anger. Anger at being ignorant all these years. Anger because I never bothered to look for Carly. Anger because I’d dwelled into other things, thinking that she didn’t want me anymore. Not knowing I was her string to breaking. I should have held Laim down and made him tell me all about her after meeting outside the state. But I had assumed Carly had forgotten me. I wished she had, but instead she was fighting for her life. “No. Till now, Carly believed you saw the letter but never got back to her. She believed you hated her and abandoned her and for this hatred, she had stayed away from you and wanted the wedding null.”I wanted to laugh. Now, I know the reason for her shock the first time we met, the dread that covered her eyes. “I wanted to tell her. But I stopped trying, because hating you was the only thing Carly was holding on to, and telling her would make her go far from me. I
Arthur My hands clenched painfully around the steering wheel. The doctor’s words lingered in my head.“As I said before, it’s a high-profile drug, only distributed to a small group as it’s costly. Whoever is taking this must have gone through something critical to resolve to take this. It has a dreadful side effect. According to my doctor, it helps numb painful psychological memories and also prevent it. You said the person fainted right? I’m afraid this is not the first time and it’s a side effect of the drugs. I wasn't allowed in fully but I’m sure of this. Can you tell me other symptoms the person might have?” I had explained to him, then left his office. Something dreadful must have happened to Carly. Anything that makes one want to erase their memories has to be critical and I couldn’t help but feel it had to do with older Harrington words. He said I had created damage to Carly before. How? What happened years ago? After I moved back to the state on my grandfather’s command,
Arthur It has been a day now yet Cafly wasn't waking. The doctors have said everything was fine. I sighed watching her breathe softly. Her mom had left a while ago, she had cried, then thanked me. But it wasn't needed., because Carly was mine and it was my duty to keep her safe. Liam had left with Gina too. Things don't feel good between them but they aren't chewing each other's heads off. “You should wake up soon, Carly.” I kissed her hand. The drugs administered were impressive. Even though it was just a day, the cuts on her skin weren't as overbearing as before. How I wanted to go back to that container and rip James's fingers off for causing her harm. “I miss you.” I raised my head at Carly’s voice, meeting her face. My eyes widened. “Carly.” I rose, moving closer to her. Heavy sigh of relief coursed through me. My heart tightened seeing her eyes. My hands brushed against her face and she leaned into my touch, her eyes on me. “I missed you so much. I thought something happe
Arthur I entered the container where James was tied. Yes, a container because we were in the middle of the seas, inside my private ship, a perfect place to torture him without the intervention of his accomplice. Yes, I have figured that he had one. One that thought to set up everything in the werehouse burning. That warehouse wasn’t public property. It was private and secluded. If he was able to get access then it was someone of high earn and not to talk about the camera’s setup, then the bomb that followed. Something was missing and I knew it was linked to his accomplice. The light in the dark shone on James. He was tied to a chair in the middle, his legs and hands bound. His face is filled with cuts, his lips burst open. His eyes swallowed even when closed. His clothes are filled with blood, one that had disgusted others but to me, I wanted more and I was going to give him. Not from my boys beating him up, no, that was for wasting their time. “I can see you are already enjoyin
Carly It couldn't be true. Arthur couldn't have been there when the building exploded right? He couldn't have died. I allowed the tears flow down my cheeks. Still in disbelief of what I saw. I licked my dried lips, my eyes blurry from too many tears, yet it didn't stop. I needed to leave. I glanced at the little window again.Even though my body could fit there, what were the chances of me being able to get there and then, my eyes met the chain fixed on my leg. I closed my eyes, helpless at the situation again. Everything was painful. From my face to my body, and my stomach. I placed my hands on my stomach, hoping the pain had subsided. A pain that started after watching that video. The door opened and I snapped my head to it, James walked in, a plastic bag in hand filled with something. A shape of bottles. “I figured we should drink to Arthur burning into ashes or flesh. Very soon, the whole world would be informed of his passing. But before then, let's celebrate.” He sat on th
