Lana’s POV

I watched him take the first bite, my heart hammering with anticipation. The moment his eyes closed and his jaw stilled, relief washed over me. He liked it. Well, he clearly more than liked it.

“This is incredible,” he said finally, his voice almost reverent.

A smile tugged at my lips, pride swelling in my chest. Hours of struggle in the kitchen, the frustration of rolled pastry tearing, the fear of burning the beef, it all melted away with those words. “I thought you might like it,” I whispered.

But even as he kept eating, savoring every bite, I started noticing the smallest twitch of his jaw when he shifted. The faintest tightening in his shoulders. The way his hand pressed against his side once before he caught himself and dropped it.

Something was wrong.

I could tell that he was too careful with his movements, way too guarded. Every time I leaned closer, every time my arm brushed against him, I felt him tense for a split second before he forced himself to relax. Most pe

  • A wife for the cursed alpha    72. Enduring the pain

Max’s POVThe pain carved into me with every needle bite, every tug of the thread pulling skin back together. My fingers dug into the sheets, but I refused to make a sound. When the last stitch was tied, the pack healer leaned back, her hands covered in blood. She pressed a cool poultice into the wound, its scent of ironroot and wolfsbane burning my nose. Then she wound fresh, clean bandages across my torso, wrapping layer after layer until the bleeding was sealed.“It should hold,” she murmured. “But you need to rest. Any strain could tear it all open again.”Her warning barely touched me. The ache in my body was nothing compared to the pull in my chest.I swung my legs over the side of the bed. The floor seemed a mile away. For a second the world tilted, a black haze closing in my vision. My hands gripped the frame hard enough to splinter it, and I forced myself to breathe, forced the darkness back.“Alpha Max!” Ethan warned, half rising from his chair. But I shoved myself upright,

  • A wife for the cursed alpha    71. The trap

Max’s POVThe rest of the pack arrived. Wolves emerged. Ethan’s men, all shifted, their eyes glowing in the night. They surrounded Jared, growling low, cutting off any escape.Jared staggered, tried to rise, but Ethan swiped him down again, leaving him bleeding and broken. The other wolves moved in, pinning him, their combined strength forcing him into submission. His roars of defiance echoed, but they were weaker now, fading under the weight of their power.I felt my body giving out, the beast inside me fading as the pain dragged me back toward human form. Bones snapped and shifted painfully as fur receded, leaving me sprawled on the ground in torn clothes, blood soaking my shirt. My stomach wound throbbed with each shallow breath.I tried to sit up, but the agony doubled me over. My hand pressed against the wound, warm blood seeping between my fingers. The world tilted, the street spinning in my vision.“Max!” Ethan’s voice came, half-growl, half-bark, as he forced himself back into

  • A wife for the cursed alpha    70. The fight

Max’s POV The second hit was harder. My SUV slammed into his side with a crack of shattering glass and twisting steel. Jared’s sedan fishtailed violently, skidding before grinding to a stop against a concrete barrier. Smoke hissed from under his hood, the acrid scent of oil and scorched rubber tainting the air.I killed the engine and shoved the door open, my feet hitting the ground with a thud that echoed through the empty street. My pulse was steady, but the beast in me was wide awake now, every muscle rigid, and my senses even more sharper. The driver’s side door of the sedan creaked open. Jared stumbled out, coughing, one hand braced against the mangled frame. His eyes lifted and froze when they found me. Even in the dim glow of the warehouse lights, I saw the flicker of recognition and fear.“Alpha Max,” he rasped, straightening slowly, trying to play at composure. “Didn’t expect you’d come yourself.”I took a step closer, the gravel crunching under my shoes. My shadow stretched

  • A wife for the cursed alpha    69. Tracking Jared

Max’s POVShe rolled her eyes, but the smile broke through before she could hide it.We ate like that, trading bites, the clink of cutlery and the quiet between us somehow comfortable.By the time the plates were empty, I realized the tension from last night had become much lighter. We carried the empty plates back into the kitchen. She set hers in the sink and reached for the sponge, but I caught her wrist before she could start.“I’ll wash. You dry.”She narrowed her eyes at me like she was deciding whether to argue, then gave a small shrug.Warm water filled the basin, then I rolled up my sleeves and slipped my hands in, the soap foaming around the plates. She kept staring at me, waiting for the first one. When I passed it to her, a drop of water slid down her finger. She flicked it at me without warning. It landed on my cheek then I paused, staring at her. Her lips twitched. I set the next plate on the counter, shook my wet hands, and sent a scatter of drops in her direction. She

  • A wife for the cursed alpha    68. Getting closer

Max’s POVLight seeped in before I opened my eyes. The curtain hadn’t been pulled all the way shut, and the thin slice of sun found its way into the room. She was still on her side, facing me. The blanket had slipped just low enough to bare the slope of her neck, and the curve of one shoulder blade. My arm was still around her, palm loose against the space just below her ribs. I didn’t remember falling asleep that way, but I hadn’t let go. Her breathing was slow and even.I watched the rise and fall, the tiny catch at the top of each inhale. I should’ve moved but I didn’t want to.The room smelled faintly of her hair, of skin warmed under covers. My eyes followed the messy strands fanned over her pillow. A few had drifted against my arm in the night, they looked mesmerizingly messy. The unwanted memory of our argument came into my mind. Her voice from last night still had that tense edge in it. I remembered the echo of my own, the weight of the words I’d pushed between us. I looked a
