ACROSS THE RED ROSE GARDEN

: THE KISS

*ARABELLA'S POV*

I woke up the next morning to the soft, rhythmic sound of breathing beside me. Turning my head, I froze.

Alessandro was sleeping right next to me, his long dark hair messy against the pillows, his sharp features completely relaxed in sleep. The sight of him brought a sudden, suffocating rush of reality back into my chest. My family was gone. My sister was fighting for her life.

And I was trapped in this beautiful, dark fortress.

ACROSS THE RED ROSE GARDEN The drive to the penthouse was completely silent. I kept twisting my fingers together nervously, staring out of the window as my mind remained trapped at the warehouse. Yet, beneath the fear and exhaustion, my fractured heart felt as though it had finally begun to heal, even if only a little. I needed to kill De Luca before he killed us first. I needed to avenge my parents. “When will I get to see my sister?” I asked, breaking the silence. Alessandro was sipping his whiskey, gazing out through the tinted window, seemingly lost in thought. “When the time is right,” he replied without looking at me. “But for now, she's safe. One of our best doctors is treating her. She's out of immediate danger, but she's still unconscious. There is a chance she might slip into a deep coma.” My eyes widened, and my breath caught in my throat. “A coma?” “I... I need to... I want to see her now, Alessandro,” I demanded, my voice carrying a sharpness I hadn't known I

ACROSS THE RED ROSE GARDEN My hand shook around the lighter. The flame jumped, wild and small. Alessandro didn’t move. He just watched me, waiting to see what kind of monster I could be if I wanted to. The prisoner was sobbing, his eyes on me, begging without words. In his face, I saw the face of my parents. I was sure they had begged him just like he was doing right now. Fear vanished into thin air, replaced by a surge of anger. He was one of the men responsible for killing my parents. The people who had taken everything from me. And now he was looking at me sobbing, begging for mercy. I dropped to my knees in front of him. The concrete was cold through my dress. "Look at me," I whispered. He didn’t. So I did what Alessandro did to me. I reached out and grabbed his chin, forcing his bloody, broken face up until he had no choice but to meet my eyes. I took out my handkerchief and slowly wiped his bloody face. "Who sent you?" My voice didn’t shake. I wasn’t sure w

ACROSS THE RED ROSE GARDEN CHAPTER 11 I stumbled back, stunned. “What?” I knew he had promised to find whoever was behind this, but I never thought it would be this quick. I swallowed hard, a sudden wave of dread washing over me. Did I really want to hear this? Did I really want to know? I squared my shoulders, burying my fear. “I’m going with you.” A dark smile spread across Alessandro’s lips. “Speaking like a true Hawthorne wifey,” he said, pulling out a lighter. The flame flickered, illuminating the sharp angles of his face as he lit a cigarette. He exhaled a plume of smoke, looking me up and down. “Change your dress. We don’t want that pretty little thing of yours getting ruined.” The drive to the warehouse was a quick and silent one. When we arrived and walked inside, the sharp click of my heels echoing through the quiet hallway. Alessandro paced right behind me like a shadow. As we approached a heavy black door, muffled screams pierced the silence from the other

ACROSS THE RED ROSE GARDEN : KILLERS *ARABELLA'S POV* Alessandro tore his lips from mine, pushing me back onto the cold floor with enough force to make my hands skid across the tiles. He surged to his feet in one fluid, chaotic motion, his chest heaving as he raked both hands through his hair. "Fuck," he spat, the word dripping with a lethal mix of rage and self disgust. Before I could even process the sudden coldness, his fingers clamped around my arm. He hauled me to my feet, dragging me into the adjoining bathroom. With a sharp jerk of his wrist, he cranked the shower handle, sending a blast of freezing water cascading down. He shoved me toward the stream and vanished, slamming the door behind him. I stood there, fully clothed, as the icy water drenched my hair and soaked through my clothes, plastering them to my skin. The freezing shock numbed the lingering heat on my lips, leaving me entirely alone with the chaotic rush of my thoughts. I don't know how long I s

The sight of him brought a sudden, suffocating rush of reality back into my chest. My family was gone. My sister was fighting for her life. And I was trapped in this beautiful, dark fortress. Silently, I slipped the heavy sheets off my body. My bare feet touched the cold hardwood floor. I didn't want to wake him, so I glided across the vast penthouse like a ghost, my white silk nightgown fluttering around my thighs. I walked into the massive, ultra-modern kitchen. My mind was completely numb, a black void of grief and despair. My last conversation with them was a fight. My hands moved on autopilot, opening drawer after drawer until my fingers brushed against cold metal. I pu

ACROSS THE RED ROSE GARDEN : SLEEP He bowed his head quickly and retreated back into the private elevator, leaving me alone with my thoughts once again. I turned back to the panoramic window, the glittering lights of the city offering no comfort. The sound of Arabella’s muted cries from the bedroom had finally quieted down, meaning she had either cried herself to sleep or my mother had managed to soothe her. My chest tightened. I was Alessandro Hawthorne. A man who ruled with iron and blood. The king of Vellano City. Mercy was a weakness I had never afforded myself, and collateral damage was nothing more than the price of doing business. I had built my empire on fear, and I buried anyone foolish enough to challenge it. Yet the memory of Arabella, her small, fragile body shivering in that white silk gown stirred something dark and vicious inside me. I didn't know what the hell she had done to me, and I didn't care. Because I didn't lose control. I made other people l
