VALERIE

I stilled.

He called me by my name.

Not Ms. Laurent. Just my name, said quietly, like it had slipped out before he’d decided whether he meant to say it at all.

I turned back, one hand still on the door.

“Why?” he asked. “Why did you leave?”

The question landed harder than it should have. For a second I just stood there, staring at him, the careful professionalism I’d held onto for the entire meeting threatening to slip.

I let the door ease shut again.

“You really need me to answer that?

  • AFTER I FORGOT YOU   The dress

VALERIEThree weeks had never felt so short.Every morning I opened the café, served the same regulars, wiped the same counters, and pretended the calendar wasn’t moving toward a night I had already agreed to and already hated. I hadn’t really touched my apartment since the day I moved in. Boxes still sat stacked against the living room wall, half-labeled in my own rushed handwriting, and the only furniture I actually owned was a mattress, a folding table, and one chair I’d bought. Between the café and my mother and everything with Roman, I hadn’t had a single free evening to turn the place into somewhere that actually looked lived in.So when Zoey showed up at my door two afternoons before the dinner, arms full of paper bags from a home goods store and a bottle of wine tucked under one elbow, I didn’t have it in me to pretend I wasn’t relieved.“You said you needed help,” she announced, brushing past me into the apartment before I’d even fully opened the door. “I’m helping. Don’t ar

  • AFTER I FORGOT YOU   The stake

ROMANI waited until mid-afternoon before I drove to Mercer Street, when the lunch rush would have thinned out and the café would be closer to empty than it ever was in the mornings. The place was quiet by the time I got there. Through the window I could see only two people at a corner table and Valerie behind the counter, wiping down the espresso machine. I sat in the car longer than I needed to, the same way I had the evening before. Only this time the sidewalk was empty. No dark-haired man reaching for the door like he belonged there. No easy smile waiting for her on the other side of the glass.I got out, crossed the street, and pushed the door open. The little bell above it rang.Valerie looked up from behind the counter, and I watched her expression shift through several things in quick succession…surprise, then something warier, before settling into professional neutrality.“What can I get you?” she asked, like I was any other customer.“Black coffee.”She didn’t move right aw

  • AFTER I FORGOT YOU   The kiss

VALERIEI sat back down across from Miles with a fresh napkin pressed against the front of my blouse. The wine stain had already started to settle into a dark, uneven patch, and no amount of blotting was going to make it look intentional.“Hey.” Miles looked up, concern flickering across his face the second he actually got a look at me. “Are you okay? The wine thing… it’s really nothing, I promise, they’re already bringing you a new glass.”“I’m fine.” The words came out a beat too fast and I hated how obviously rehearsed they sounded even to my own ears. “Really. I’m fine.”“Did I freak you out?” he asked, quieter now, some of his earlier confidence visibly deflating. “With the…what I was saying, before. I know I kind of dropped it out of nowhere, and if it’s too much, or too soon, or—”“No. No, you didn’t.” I reached for my water instead of the wine, needing something to do with my hands that wasn’t twisting my napkin into a ruined little knot. “I promise.”That was, technically, a

CHAPTER SIXTEENVALERIE“…and then the entire server rack went down in the middle of the presentation,” Miles said, shaking his head as he reached for his water. “Client just sat there staring at a frozen screen while I tried to pretend it was part of the demo. It was not part of the demo.”I laughed into my glass, the sound coming out easier than it had in days.“Please tell me you recovered.”“I recovered by blaming the building’s Wi-Fi and moving the whole meeting to a whiteboard. Not my finest hour, but they still signed.” He leaned back slightly, looking pleased with himself in that understated way of his. “So. Not a complete disaster.”The restaurant was small, tucked into a side street. Miles had clearly done a little research before texting me the address, because it was exactly the sort of place I would have picked myself if I’d had the energy to look for it. We ordered simply. He got the roasted chicken with lemon and herbs. I got the pasta with mushrooms and a glass of whit

  • AFTER I FORGOT YOU   Completely over him

VALERIEI pulled Miles through the door before he could say anything else, and the little bell above us rang again as it swung shut.“You know you could have told me you were coming,” I said, still smiling, unable to fully wipe it off my face even as I pretended to scold him.He laughed under his breath, dropping his bag onto one of the stools like he’d done it a hundred times before, even though this was the first time he’d ever actually seen the place in person. “And ruin the surprise? Where’s the fun in that.”“The fun is I would have actually cleaned up before you got here.”“Val, I watched you live out of a single duffel bag in Boston for four months. I think we’re past the point of you needing to impress me.”I swatted his arm, though the truth was my chest had gone warm and a little unsteady the second I’d heard the bell and looked up to see him standing there, unannounced, grinning like showing up in New York without warning was the most natural thing in the world. It had been

CHAPTER FOURTEENROMAN“They accepted,” Daniel said, setting the file on my desk with so much satisfaction. “All four tenants signed off on the revised terms this morning. Mercer Street is settled.”“Good.” I didn’t look up from the report in front of me, though I wasn’t really reading it either, hadn’t been for the last ten minutes if I was honest with myself.“That’s it?” Daniel raised an eyebrow. “No comment? You fought me on the transition period for twenty minutes last week.”“It’s handled. Thank you, Daniel.”He lingered a moment longer than necessary like he suspected something was wrong but knew better than to ask directly, so he gathered his things and let himself out.I sat there once the door clicked shut, the report still open in front of me, and let myself actually think about the thing I’d been avoiding thinking about since I’d left my father’s dining room.Bring your wife to dinner.A month. I had a month, and I’d already burned nearly a week of it doing nothing but sit
