CHAPTER 2 - Nick’s pov

There are two things I love in life. One, Fridays.

Two, Trading insults with Clumsy Gracie.

Her name’s actually Gracie Gilbert but I don’t even care. Gracie, she’s sarcastic, prickly and looks at me irritatingly like I’m the gum stuck to her shoe. But, I find her interesting, to an extent. I love how she hates me and I love how she knows that I love how she hates me. But I hate how audacious she is, how she tells me “shut up” to my face. No sugarcoating, no fake smiles.

This morning, she wore a coat that made her look like Tyrion Lannister. I don’t just get this girl, sometimes, she's pretty dull, other times, she’s scary, makes me want to go home and have a good day.

Anyways, I love staring at her cause it upsets her and that’s my favorite part of life, the days I live for.

I’m at it again, she sees me staring and walks up to me then hands me a glue. At first I thought the iconic Clumsy Gracie was going to ask for help, not until she opened her fraudulent mouth.

“Here, glue your eyes back to their sockets”

Iconic, I must admit. I watch her move back to her computer with her face squeezed like a bag of burritos, whatever that means. I lean back in my chair, watching her evil fingers fly over the keyboard.

My life is boring, all I do is work, play basketball in my free time, hit the gym and search the internet for some good insults and comebacks so I never run out of what to say and lose a fight to Gracie. I’d rather lick a dog’s puke.

“Nickolas,” Steve calls from the next cubicle.

“Pancakes after work?”

I shrug, “sounds good.”

Steve is a chill person, one of those unproblematic guys that only care about eating and farting without making any sound.

The office is busy today. Phones ringing, printers printing, Gracie-Clumsying and answering calls with that professional tone that still sounds like she's annoyed. She doesn't look up at me once, which is annoying. Not like I want her attention or I like it.

Fine! I like it. But that’s just because I can’t annoy her without having her attention.

I remember the first week she joined the company. She dropped coffees on my shoes and didn't even apologise properly, she just said;

"At least they're black, you can just pretend it's a new design."

I want to call her ugly but that would be a big lie.

"Hey, Nick."

I turn to look and  it's Jeffery from the commercials department, "the boss wants to see your project team in five minutes."

I nod. As soon as he walks away, I glance over at Gracie. She's already packing her notes into a folder. Sly bitch, always wants to be a step ahead of me.

We end up walking to the boss's office at the same time, I made sure of that. I try to match her pace close enough for her to notice me but she ignores me.

"You look tired, Clums. Not sleeping well or it's just your face?"

"I'm not your mirror, Nick". She says and increases her pace.

I smirk at her comeback, I didn't expect her to escalate at this time of the day.

"You're learning, Clums," I say, stuffing both hands in my pocket as I keep up with her pace.

"Soon, you'll be half as good as me".

She doesn't respond. Instead, she keeps her head high and walks faster,I almost burst out laughing.

The hallway to the boss's office is packed with framed pictures of past projects, reception desk and perfectly furnished rooms. Clums stare at the designs as we pass, I know she loves designs. She's annoyingly good at her job.

We reach the metal door of the office at the same time and I step ahead to hold it open for her. Not because I'm a gentleman, but because I want to see that disgusted look on her face when I pretend to be one.

She walks through without saying thank you, predictable.

Mr Gray was already seated at his sleek mahogany desk.

 "Nickolas, Gracie, welcome. Sit".

Gracie takes the chair farthest from me, but you can't take a man's dream from him. I pull my chair closer to her than necessary before sitting. I hear her sigh and it warms my heart.

"I've assigned you both to work together as lead coordinators. I expect constant communication, shared responsibilities and no distractions whatsoever." The boss addressed, throwing is a quick glance.

"Yes sir," Gracie says crisply, opening her file.

" Of course," I say, leaning back casually. "We make a good pair for the project " I added.

Gracie gives me a burning look, the type that could dethrone a king.

"Your first client meeting is Monday morning. I want a detailed preliminary concept and timeline before then. Understood?"

We both nod.

The meeting lasts another fifteen minutes, most of which Clums spends scribbling notes while I mentally organise all the ways I'm going to annoy her during this project without breaking any rules.

When we leave, I make sure to hold the door open for her. She closes the door and reopens it for herself and it makes me laugh. We walk back to our department and I decided to test the limit of her patience.

"So Clumsy, I was thinking we should have a team name. Something romantically professional.  She looks at me and I can see she's pissed. Okay, I should stop here, looks like  she's going to cry anytime soon.

Back at our desks. She immediately dives into her emails while I spin slowly in my chair, stylishly watching her. She's typing furiously. Either she's plotting my murder or she's writing to her future self about this day.

I lean over, "Want to grab lunch later to discuss strategy?"

"I'd rather eat glue," she fires immediately.

" Glue's not so filling," I say. "But it would organise some of your ideas."

She throws me a look that says I'm a stupid fool and returns to her work.

The urge to see her the next morning was unbearable.I told myself it was just to make sure she was okay, but I didn't even believe that myselfI drove past her apartment thrice, before I gathered the courage to finally park. Her building looked quiet, isolated but welcoming. For a moment, I thought maybe she left town. Until I eventually saw her sitting on the stairs outside. She tied her hair up into a messy bun, the messiest I've ever seen. She had no makeup on, wasn't smiling, just a book and a plate of dessert. When her eyes met mine, I expected a negative reaction. Instead, she smiled warmly, though it was obvious that she forced it.I walked over, both hands in my pockets."Hey.""Hey,” her voice was hoarse.I sat beside her, close enough to feel the heat from her body, far enough to not touch her."You got the apology?" I asked."Yeah, doesn't change anything though." "It does, at least for a start."For a moment, we just sat there. I'm not good at comforting someone without

I've seen a lot of jerks in my life, but no one has made me want to smash a phone into someone's face until they bleed to death faster than the jerk who made Clums cry. Gracie’s face was filled with tears when she saw the video. By the time work ended, she was already gone. I couldn't stop her. I didn't want to. She didn't need me breathing down her neck at a time like this. She needed space, and that was exactly what I gave her. Micheal Peterson. The name was like a bad image in my head now. I sat at my desk longer than I should’ve, it was late and everyone had gone home. My laptop screen glowed in the dark as I scrolled from page to page, viewing Micheal’s life like a bad movie. Every new thing I learned about him made me want to punch him all the more.He had an entirely different online presence . I found his contact details after five long hours of search, bought a fake female profile then reached out to him saying I’m a fan who would love to meet him. You see, if you want to

Monday mornings are like chocolates. Little of it is sweet, too much of it are like chocolates with the extra calories.I was halfway through my first cup, scrolling emails and older messages when my phone buzzed. It was a message from an unknown number. I ignore it to finish up and leave for work. Another notification pops up, I frown. Wrong number? I tapped it.A video.I hesitated, but curiosity won and I opened it.Then, my world stopped. It was me. My hair was longer in the video, I wasn't putting on anything, I was dancing with no clothes and he was touching me all over. The bed, the angle, the person, it was me. The one night I wish I could erase from history. It wasn’t just a video, it was evidence, humiliation and disgrace with my face, my body, my shame. The one night I had prayed to remain buried, six feet under.Micheal.My stomach dropped so fast like it was being held. My hands were shaking so bad, I almost dropped my phone. I look up immediately, as if I was commanded

I fall down at least three times every week on my company's stairs. It’s not intentional. Maybe, I just have a staircase-attraction charm. Whatever that is."Do you need help, Clumsy Gracie?""Fuck off Nick!"I hate Nickolas, I really hate him. We've been working together for seven years now but we've never had a real conversation. That’s just how much we hate each other and always ready to take advantage of each other in negative situations like this. Everyone calls me Gracie, it was originally “Grace,” but I like the “cie” part. It sounds more baddie-like. Nick calls me “Clumsy Gracie,” I don’t know if he spells it as “Clumsy” or “Clumsie.” Oh wait, he calls me Clums too. What a total jerk!We argue a lot, way too much for normal human beings and I always get pissed first. Honestly, most times he wins the argument and I hate him more for it. But at least, I get the most love at work and he gets the opposite due to his offensive, aggressive, oppressive and any other negative 'sives
