CHAPTER 2 - Nick’s pov

There are two things I love in life. One, Fridays.

Two, Trading insults with Clumsy Gracie.

Her name’s actually Gracie Gilbert but I don’t even care. Gracie, she’s sarcastic, prickly and looks at me irritatingly like I’m the gum stuck to her shoe. But, I find her interesting, to an extent. I love how she hates me and I love how she knows that I love how she hates me. But I hate how audacious she is, how she tells me “shut up” to my face. No sugarcoating, no fake smiles.

This morning, she wore a coat that made her look like Tyrion Lannister. I don’t just get this girl, sometimes, she's pretty dull, other times, she’s scary, makes me want to go home and have a good day.

Anyways, I love staring at her cause it upsets her and that’s my favorite part of life, the days I live for.

I’m at it again, she sees me staring and walks up to me then hands me a glue. At first I thought the iconic Clumsy Gracie was going to ask for help, not until she opened her fraudulent mouth.

“Here, glue your eyes back to their sockets”

Iconic, I must admit. I watch her move back to her computer with her face squeezed like a bag of burritos, whatever that means. I lean back in my chair, watching her evil fingers fly over the keyboard.

My life is boring, all I do is work, play basketball in my free time, hit the gym and search the internet for some good insults and comebacks so I never run out of what to say and lose a fight to Gracie. I’d rather lick a dog’s puke.

“Nickolas,” Steve calls from the next cubicle.

“Pancakes after work?”

I shrug, “sounds good.”

Steve is a chill person, one of those unproblematic guys that only care about eating and farting without making any sound.

The office is busy today. Phones ringing, printers printing, Gracie-Clumsying and answering calls with that professional tone that still sounds like she's annoyed. She doesn't look up at me once, which is annoying. Not like I want her attention or I like it.

Fine! I like it. But that’s just because I can’t annoy her without having her attention.

I remember the first week she joined the company. She dropped coffees on my shoes and didn't even apologise properly, she just said;

"At least they're black, you can just pretend it's a new design."

I want to call her ugly but that would be a big lie.

"Hey, Nick."

I turn to look and  it's Jeffery from the commercials department, "the boss wants to see your project team in five minutes."

I nod. As soon as he walks away, I glance over at Gracie. She's already packing her notes into a folder. Sly bitch, always wants to be a step ahead of me.

We end up walking to the boss's office at the same time, I made sure of that. I try to match her pace close enough for her to notice me but she ignores me.

"You look tired, Clums. Not sleeping well or it's just your face?"

"I'm not your mirror, Nick". She says and increases her pace.

I smirk at her comeback, I didn't expect her to escalate at this time of the day.

"You're learning, Clums," I say, stuffing both hands in my pocket as I keep up with her pace.

"Soon, you'll be half as good as me".

She doesn't respond. Instead, she keeps her head high and walks faster,I almost burst out laughing.

The hallway to the boss's office is packed with framed pictures of past projects, reception desk and perfectly furnished rooms. Clums stare at the designs as we pass, I know she loves designs. She's annoyingly good at her job.

We reach the metal door of the office at the same time and I step ahead to hold it open for her. Not because I'm a gentleman, but because I want to see that disgusted look on her face when I pretend to be one.

She walks through without saying thank you, predictable.

Mr Gray was already seated at his sleek mahogany desk.

 "Nickolas, Gracie, welcome. Sit".

Gracie takes the chair farthest from me, but you can't take a man's dream from him. I pull my chair closer to her than necessary before sitting. I hear her sigh and it warms my heart.

"I've assigned you both to work together as lead coordinators. I expect constant communication, shared responsibilities and no distractions whatsoever." The boss addressed, throwing is a quick glance.

"Yes sir," Gracie says crisply, opening her file.

" Of course," I say, leaning back casually. "We make a good pair for the project " I added.

Gracie gives me a burning look, the type that could dethrone a king.

"Your first client meeting is Monday morning. I want a detailed preliminary concept and timeline before then. Understood?"

We both nod.

The meeting lasts another fifteen minutes, most of which Clums spends scribbling notes while I mentally organise all the ways I'm going to annoy her during this project without breaking any rules.

When we leave, I make sure to hold the door open for her. She closes the door and reopens it for herself and it makes me laugh. We walk back to our department and I decided to test the limit of her patience.

"So Clumsy, I was thinking we should have a team name. Something romantically professional.  She looks at me and I can see she's pissed. Okay, I should stop here, looks like  she's going to cry anytime soon.

Back at our desks. She immediately dives into her emails while I spin slowly in my chair, stylishly watching her. She's typing furiously. Either she's plotting my murder or she's writing to her future self about this day.

I lean over, "Want to grab lunch later to discuss strategy?"

"I'd rather eat glue," she fires immediately.

" Glue's not so filling," I say. "But it would organise some of your ideas."

She throws me a look that says I'm a stupid fool and returns to her work.

Do they seriously not know how obvious it is that they like each other or are they pretending not to know? I wonder if anyone else noticed or I’m just too quick witted for my own good. Anyway, we’re not talking about them today.I lie a lot.Not all the time though, just enough to make my life comfortable and more interesting.People think liars are evil masterminds who spend hours plotting events and manipulating everyone around them.Well, that’s bullshit. Most lies are small, harmless, convenient. For example, when Mr. Gray asked why I left my previous workplace, I told him I wanted a change of environment. That was a lie. When Gracie asked if I liked working here, I told her yes.Another lie. When the fine lady at the convenience sto

I’ve never had a friend, I never made any effort to keep any. So this new bond with this new girl was both exciting and terrifying. After work yesterday, we went shopping. You know what they say about shoppers therapy? After yesterday, I think it’s true.Back at home, Emily was a little too excited as she kept jumping around, touching everything, staring at everything even though it was nothing extraordinary. “Never been to a friend’s place after I turned 16,” she said.“Why’s that?”“Always been the bad friend, the one parents warn kids against.”That kind of took me off guard, “you mean that?”“Yeah.”“Is there a reason?”“Maybe not.”“So?” “Advised a kid back in high school to sleep at her boyfriend’s place after her mom yelled at her.”“What?”“Slept with my best friend’s boyfriend once, had an affair with my friend’s father too…”“I beg your finest pardon?”“Fingered another friend.”At that point, I was this close to throwing her out of my house.“Are you gay?”“No, I like boy

People say I’m pretty annoying, I tell them thank you and leave out the ‘annoying’ because I like to focus on the positives.I got to work early today, not to see Nick, ew.Okay fine, I couldn’t wait to see if even though I knew the outcome wouldn’t be different from yesterday.“You’re early today,” he said as soon as I stepped in.“Not today Satan, I don’t want to burn my calories talking to you. I’m trying to gain weight.”He laughed and I also laughed inside of me. I’m so funny.“I’m not in support of you gaining weight.”“Whoever asked for your support?”“Clums, did I do something wrong?“You ever done anything right?”There was a brief silence, I was almost feeling guilty but remembered that he started it first. “You’re really mean for no reason,” he said and i was seriously pissed.“Are you always such an idiot or do you just show off when I’m around?”“You think your presence is something?”“I know it is.”“You see, Clums, you’re too delusional.”“At least I’m not stupid.”He

I made a mistake.Several mistakes actually. The first one was jumping in to help her out of that situation. Not like I didn’t want to, but maybe, I should’ve asked her first. The second one was kissing her.The third one was discovering that every teenage fantasy I’d ever had about her was less impressive than what really happened. The fourth and most recent mistake?Going to work the very next morning.A smart men would’ve called in sick, a genius would’ve resigned.Gracie calls me stupid sometimes, maybe she was right all along. So there I was, at work, pretending to function, pretending I wasn’t replaying the previous night every sixteen seconds.Pretending Gracie hadn’t done something to me, like her laugh wasn’t permanently stuck in my brain.Pretending I hadn’t…well, pretending a lot of things weren’t going through my head. The worst part?I couldn’t even look her in the eye, because every time I tried to, my brain stopped working. What if this isn’t the right time? What if I g

My day started out great, until seven o’ clock, that’s when I woke up.Morning came like Nick did in bed, but time flew like he did after our first encounter.I put on my not-so-short, short red dress, perfect heels and the perfect bag to go with it. Before you wonder if I’m dressing to bring a man back to his senses, I am. The drive to work today didn’t piss me off much, except the old lady that kept honking her car when there clearly was traffic.“Is this a fashion show, miss?” Came from behind me, an unfamiliar voice. I turned around to check who it was, saying my sarcastic reply for if it’d be an ugly person. Well, better luck next time, it was an Angel.“And who the fuck are you?”“Emily Casanova, your new colleague,” she said, stretching out her arms for a handshake.“Nice to meet you, Emily Cassava…”“It’s Casanova.”“It’s a work place, not a fashion show.”“Then dress like you’re coming to work. Pretty sure every other person thinks you overdressed but not for work.”I turne

If happiness was a person, it’d have been me this morning.Actually, scratch that.If happiness was a person, it would probably leave wet towels on the bed and forget to zip up.I’m happiness. Well, just for this moment.I was still deep inside my head when I left the house, I forgot to put out the towels and didn’t even zip up until a Good Samaritan helped with it.On a normal day, I’d have been wondering how many people saw my inner wear or if anyone did, I’d be dying of embarrassment and won’t want to walk that path anymore. But today, unlike every other day, I was too excited to care. The drive to work was unusually shorter or did I drive faster? The traffic seemed longer but it didn’t annoy me.The radio didn’t irritate me either, I even vibed to a song.An old lady scratched my car with her shopping cart outside the parking lot but it couldn’t ruin my mood. Life was good. Or at least, life felt good. For once.I stepped into the building feeling lighter than I had in years, hum
