Marie Drams was seated in the comfortable leather chair of the private airplane, the whir of the motors hardly filtering into her mind. At her side, Candy—Charles's niece, her sole daughter—sat silently, her big eyes staring out the window as the aircraft rolled along the runway. The turbulence of the flight ahead was nothing at all like the storm that was raging in Marie's soul.

Her fingers tapped out a rhythm against the armrest, her mind filled with visions of the life that could have been hers. The Billion legacy—Charles's inheritance—had always been attainable. She had lived among them, yet she had never been a part of it. Not like Fiona. Not like that woman who had somehow managed to insinuate herself into Charles's life.

Charles.

Marie's chest compressed at the mere mention of him. She loved him for years, more than she had ever really allowed herself to confess. But love was never enough, was it? Not where the Billion family was concerned. Not where Fiona Generys was concerned

The tension in the room hung in the air like a storm cloud on the horizon, and Fiona's discomfort only intensified as Charles's voice broke into the quiet. But even while he asserted himself with a confident promise, Fiona couldn't help but sense that Marie's departure was just another move in a very long game, one she wasn't privy to.“I’ll make sure of it,” Charles repeated, his eyes narrowed, a flicker of something darker behind his usual composed facade.Fiona didn’t respond immediately. She was too caught up in the weight of everything that had just transpired Marie’s biting words, Madam Jamaica’s icy dismissal, and the strange, ominous atmosphere hanging in the air like a thick fog."I hope you're right," she breathed, almost to herself, her words tinged with uncertainty. "But I can't help but get the sense that Marie isn't finished with us. She didn't go because she was finished. She… she left because she's waiting for something."Charles swung round, his body stiff as though h

They arrived at the front door, and as the security guard pushed it open, Fiona spotted a familiar face at the top of the sweeping staircase. Madam Jamaica Billion, always so regal and imposing, was making her way down, her eyes scanning them with a silent, calculating regard.Fiona's heart stuttered. Something about Jamaica being here today seemed different, colder in some way.Good day, Liza, Fiona," Madam Jamaica's voice echoed out, rich and sharp. "Isn't it a beautiful day today?""Good day, Madam Jamaica," Fiona replied, her voice friendly, though thoughts were churning in her head. The older woman's eyes rested on her for a fraction of a moment longer than necessary, and Fiona felt a shiver that something was wrong.“I see you’ve just arrived,” Madam Jamaica said with a cool smile, her eyes flicking to Liza, who was bouncing around excitedly. “I trust your day at school went well?”“Yes, thank you,” Fiona replied, her fingers tightening subtly around the strap of her bag. “"Tha

Charles's gaze gentled as he dropped down to catch her, arms going around her in a comforting hug. For a moment, the rest of the world just disappeared. Innocent and alive, his niece was a reminder of what truly counted. His heart felt lighter as he kissed the top of her head, holding her close. "Hey, sweetheart. I missed you."Candy laughed, her tinkle sounding like the peal of a bell. "I missed you too, Daddy!" she answered, the pure sweetness in her tone making it almost impossible to sense the tension that hung like a palpable thing in the air.But the moment didn't last. While the two shared those few oppressive moments, Marie remained standing near by, observing the reunion with a tempestuous stare. Her hands were fists at her sides, but she restrained herself. Charles was diverted by his niece, and her triumph was not at that time. But.The gentle ring of heels clicking resounded through the marble floors as Madam Jamaica Billion, Charles's dominant grandmother, came down from

The dark, sleek limousine moved smoothly through the curved gates of the Billion estate, its wheels barely making a noise as it rolled across the spotless grounds. The over-the-top mansion towered before them, set against manicured gardens and massive trees. Marie's eyes were fixed on the estate, her lips compressing as a queasy satisfaction warmed her chest. She had waited so long for this moment the moment when she would come back, not as a guest or outsider, but as the legitimate matriarch of this place. She looked down at Candy, who hummed quietly next to her, little hands folded together in her lap. The child had no idea of the tempest about to be unleashed upon her by her mother. To Candy, this was merely a trip to visit her much-loved Uncle Charles. For Marie, however, it was war.As the vehicle halted, doors creaked open and the housekeeper, Clara, stepped out with a strained but polite smile. "Welcome, Madam Drams," she addressed Madame Drams in a courteous but strained voice

Marie Drams gazed down at the phone in her hand, its weight suddenly more oppressive. Her fingers hovered over the screen, doubt gnawing at her determination for a moment. She had been putting this call off for weeks, the internalized doubt clinging to every choice she made refusing to dissuade her. But now, there was no other option. It had to be done. She pressed the screen, dialed the number, and waited. Her thoughts whirling with all she had to complete, all the plans that had to be in order. Her mind was sharper than a knife, icy and efficient. She had to regain what belonged to her. Her inheritance, her legacy, her daughter's future all of them hung on this. Fiona Generys didn't know what was waiting for her.The phone had rung twice before the icy, controlled tone of her lawyer came on the line."Marie, I hope everything is going to plan?" he inquired, his voice neutral but infused with curiosity. Her lips curled into a slow, cold smile. "Not yet," she said, her voice steady an
