"I had always been a close friend of Ruth whenever she spent time at the pack house. There was an ever-present tension about her, as if she were burdened by stress or caught in a cycle of overthinking. On one occasion, she confronted me with a question that caught me off guard: she wanted to know who was trying to steal Michael away from her during her absence.
