LOGINSeline.
However, as much as I want to not think about Austin, I can’t get him out of my head.
It’s the early hours of the morning after I’m done cleaning up. I grab my bag and change into street clothes before picking up the trash bags.
I exit through the alley door and lock it before making my way to the large trash bins.
I toss in the trash bags and begin to close the lid of the trash bin.
I hear the sound first before I look up, only to feel something thin pierce my neck. Almost like a small needle.
My hand instantly goes to my neck, and I feel something thin sticking out of my neck.
“Crap, what?”
I yank the thin dart out and instantly feel a wave of nausea.
I grab the edge of the trash bin and look towards the entrance of the alley. I can make out a few figures approaching me. It takes me a moment for my vision to clear, and I recognize the panther shifters from a few days ago.
“Cowards,” I spit out. “Can’t even take on one woman without trying to drug her.”
But it seems that these idiots don’t know what I am.
If I was a warlock alone, the drug the dart contained would have left me in a drooling, mindless state. But my wolf side, weak as it is, is struggling to burn through the drug, giving me enough awareness to know that I’m in danger right now.
It’s days like these when I find myself grateful for the Lycan blood flowing through my system. I can feel it fighting off the effects of the drug that can be fatal to most warlocks.
But the panther shifters aren’t waiting around, and I see deadly intent in their eyes as they approach me. I don’t have to speak to summon my powers and I touch the ground, making them all jump in pain at the jolt of electricity striking them.
But it’s weaker than normal.
One of them darts over the trash bins, lined against the wall, and runs towards me.
I try to avoid him, but his hand has already shifted into those deadly claws and he slashes at me. I hiss in pain as his claws score against my neck and chest, tearing cloth and puncturing my skin.
“Don’t kill the bitch yet!” one of them hoots in laughter. “I want to make her crawl!”
Others snicker as I stumble back. I glare at them through the strands of my hair, trying to breathe past the pain.
Crawl? Not fucking likely. I’ve crawled enough for other people to last me a lifetime!
I plant my hands on the ground, one of my fingers landing on some leaves growing out of the crack of the dirty floor. It’s difficult to use my warlock abilities right now because of how the drug is attacking my system.
But I refuse to be a victim again. It’s a vow I made to myself all those years ago.
I summon all my strength and feel the ground rumble. As do the shifters.
Looks of alarm settle on their faces. “What the hell?”
I smile weakly, not hiding my rage. “Retribution, assholes,”
The ground bursts open and long thin vines race towards the panther shifters. They howl in fear and jump out of the way. I laugh angrily, as the vines change direction, almost as if they have a mind of their own and chase the shifters.
“It’s her!” one of them shouts. “She’s controlling them!”
“How?!” his companion hisses. “The dealer said, ugh!”
He’s thrown against a wall by one of the vines and there’s a loud cracking sound as he slumps to the ground, unconscious.
“Knock her out!” One of the panthers screams.
I see three of them rush towards me. While the vines manage to stop two of them, one of them manages to get through. His claws extended, he slashes against my neck, aiming for the most vulnerable part. Even as I try to defend myself, the already seeping blood has weakened me considerably.
I feel his claws slash through neck, and a gurgling sound echoes in my ears as my vision blurs. I see the vines suddenly fall to the ground, and I, too, slump down weakly.
Dammit!
My healing abilities are nowhere close to an actual shifter’s, but they are fast. While these wounds are fatal, they might not kill me if I’m given enough time to heal.
They are advancing on me and my fingers twitch as I try to common up some strength. Just a small spell to buy myself some time, but it’s hard for me to even think.
Maybe I should consider releasing the magic that is subduing my Lycan side?
The decision has to be made fast. If they find out I’m a hybrid, I’ll have to kill them because if I let even one of them escape, it will come back to haunt me.
Just as I’m about to release the magic, I hear one of the panther shifters grunt before he is thrown against the wall by a moving shadow.
“You again?!”
My vision is too blurred to be able to make out anything concrete. All I can see is a large figure snarling and tossing around the panther shifters as if they are nothing more than rag dolls.
I’m struggling to breathe, feeling my skin stitch together at a very slow speed. My head is light from the blood loss.
I don’t know at what point I stop hearing the sounds of fighting, but something is nudging me before a hand cups my face and a familiar voice reaches my ears.
“Seline!”
There’s panic and worry in the voice, and underlying all that is a confused fear.
Austin?
Chapter 42SelineI look down at the broken plates on the floor.“LACY, these were new"“Don’t!” my friend points a finger in my direction, her face red with anger.“Don’t you fucking dare.”I FALL SILENT. When Lacy curses, it’s never a good sign.“YOU’RE DYING, and you didn’t think to tell me?!”I WINCE as another plate smashes against the wall.“LACY,” I begin, but then I see the tears in her eyes.“I’M your best fucking friend, Seline! We grew up together!” She’s shaking now, tears falling from her pretty eyes. “And you hide something like this from me?”THE TRUTH WAS INEVITABLE. But I should have handled it better.WHEN LACY BROUGHT me back to the apartment and held me as I threw up so viciously, questions were asked, and I had no choice but to answer.“I’M GOING to kill that bastard.”LACY’S ANGER has calmed me down a little, enough to sort through my own battered feelings. “No, you won’t.”THE PAIN inside me is more than just emotional. It’s a physical pain, and I know it’s beca
Chapter 41Seline I spend the next two days stewing over this new issue. One thing I notice is that from the moment my shift begins, Jason, Ray, Seth, and Lexi take a table and sit there until the end of my shift. All of these men are in Austin’s inner circle of friends, and to have them watching me makes me unnerved. But I can’t kick them out because they buy a drink or something to eat every hour.Three whole days pass when Austin finally makes an appearance. It’s when the bar is about to close. I see Austin slip in, and his companions nod at him and leave. Seeing him after that night makes my abdomen tighten in need, and I look away, cursing my traitorous body. There’s only one other customer there who’s about to get ready to leave.“We’re closed,” I say loudly, making the old swan shifter nearly jump out of his skin, and I add, “Not you, Mr. Lopez. I’ve called you a cab.”Mr. Lopez gives me a grateful look, but Austin doesn’t leave. I walk past him, ignoring him as I pick up a ch
Chapter 50SelineI freeze. “Excuse me?”Jess wets her lips, looking guilty. “Austin didn’t reject you because he wanted to. If he chose you, he would have had to leave the pack. I don’t think he would have minded that. But the thing is that right now, the only thing standing between the pack elders and the females of the pack isAustin.”I already knew that the Stone Creek Pack was a little more traditionalist than normal, but Jess’s statement sounds a little bizarre.I push my plate away. “What are you talking about?”Jess looks nervous. “Things were fine when Austin’s parents were alive. They kept the pack elders in check. But when Austin went on his first run, we were invaded by another pack, and our Alpha pair were killed. Daston had decided to step in as the Alpha and installed his adopted son, Grey's on, as the pack hunter. Fortunately, Austin returned in time and took the helm since he was already an Alpha in training. He even removed Greyson. But then, our old pack hunter w
Chapter 49When I get to my shift at Benny’s, there is someone already waiting for me.“Oh, dear God!” I glower at Austin. “Did you put a GPS on me?!”“Why did you leave?!” He grabs my wrist and pulls me into a more private area. “Tammy told you to stay still!”“Well, funny story.” I yank my arm away from him, hissing, “I don’t have to listen to you. See how that works?”I can see a mixture of anger and frustration on his face, which I’m all toofamiliar with. “You are not safe right now, Seline! Why can’t you understand that?”“Oh, I know.” I give him a steady look. “One of your people showed up and tried to rip my eyes out of my head as punishment for not staying awayfrom you. He left me with a nice shiny scar as well, as you can see.”Austin’s expression tightens. “Who was it?”“A big ugly brute with scars all over his face and"“Grayson,” Austin breathes. “And you still stayed there?!”“He was dealt with.” I shrug, far more confident now than I was then. “But what I’m starting to
Chapter 48SelineMayor Hamrington wasn’t kidding about docking my salary and overseeingthe repairs. Old miser!I look at my pitiful paycheck for this month. “How am I supposed to eat from this? Or pay rent?!”He gives me an unbothered look. “I already provide one meal per shift and Idon’t know why you’re still paying rent when your mate owns the building.Sort it out with him.”My jaw nearly falls to the ground. “Excuse me? Say that again.”“Your mate bought the building.” The vampire looks at me as if I’m a particularly annoying fly right now.“When?!”“It’s been a while. He sent your previous landlord a very strong message. You should have told me that he was trying to extort sexual favors. That’s just inappropriate.”“I did tell you.” I scowl. “You told me to deal with it.”The old vampire looks surprised. “Did you? I must have forgotten. I guess old age is finally catching up to"“Oh save it!” I growl in frustration, halfway out of the room already. “And he’s not my mate! He do
Chapter 47.SelineIt’s the sound of beeping that wakes me up. Annoyed, I make to turn off the alarm clock, but my body feels far too heavy. And then, I hear the voices.“What do you mean she’s fading away?”That sounds like Austin. If Austin ever sounded anxious and all worked up.“Exactly what I said,” comes a female voice. “She’s all bones, which is bad enough, but her wolf is dying, Austin. I can pour some healing magic in, but not more. I can’t save her.”“You have to, Tammy. You have to save her. She can’t just die like this!”I’ve never heard Austin sound so distraught, and I wonder if I’m dreaming.“This is why you don’t reject a fated bond"“It’s not supposed to kill her, Tammy!” Austin roars.“Stop shouting in my ward,” Tammy says tightly. “And what did you expect to happen, Austin? Come on. She’s a hybrid. Of course, she was going to react negatively to the bond being rejected. God knows how much she’s been suffering so far. It mustn’t have been easy for her.”My mind is st
