The border ridge was a razor-thin strip of rocky, pine-covered terrain separating the Thornwell pine forests from the jagged Castellane territory.

High noon hung overhead, casting sharp, unforgiving daylight across the grey stone outcroppings. Asha stood beside Ronan, wrapped tightly in a thick wool coat Kadence had given her before they left the estate. Her human heart was pounding a relentless, panicked rhythm against her ribs.

This wasn't a shadowy alley at two in the morning. This was broad daylight.

Across the twenty-yard expanse of flat granite sat the Castellane envoy. Dozens of heavily built men stood in disciplined, military rows. At the front stood Lord Vane Castellane, a towering man with silver-streaked dark hair, cold obsidian eyes, and a tailored coat lined with dark fur. Standing beside him was Seraphine, looking immaculate in an ivory silk suit, her cold blue eyes fixing on Asha with a look of quiet, lethal amusement.

Kadence stood at the head of the Thornwell line, six feet in front of Asha and Ronan. He wore no armor, no weapons, just his dark sweater and tactical trousers, his broad shoulders squared like an impenetrable wall between Asha and the rival pack.

"You bring a human girl to a formal blood-restoration hearing, Kadence?" Lord Vane's voice boomed across the ridge, deep, raspy, and layered with clear contempt. "Is the Alpha of the Thornwell pack so short on warriors that he hides behind a civilian pet?"

Seraphine stepped forward slightly, her soft voice carrying effortlessly over the mountain wind. "Father, please. Kadence is simply bound by pack charity. The poor girl witnessed our border conflict. She belongs in human protective custody, not standing on sacred territory."

"She stays where she is," Kadence said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, low rumble that rattled the loose gravel around his boots. "State your terms, Vane, or clear your scouts off my ridge."

Lord Vane smirked, reaching into his inner jacket pocket and pulling out a rolled scroll bound with official council wax. "The terms are simple, Alpha. Three of my men bled on this ridge during your rogue hunt. Pack precedent demands compensation. You cede the southern river valley to the Castellanes, or you honor the betrothal contract signed by your late father twenty years ago and take Seraphine as your Luna."

Asha felt the air leave her lungs. She looked at Seraphine, who gave her a subtle, victorious tilt of her chin.

He's trapped, Asha's overthinking mind screamed. If he doesn't give them land, he has to marry her. And if he refuses both, it's war.

"My father's contracts died with him," Kadence growled, his hazel eyes flashing with a sudden, violent spark of amber. "I will not give you a single acre of my valley, Vane. And I will never take your daughter into my bed."

Vane's smile vanished instantly. "Then you choose war over peace for the sake of a human stray?"

Before Kadence could answer, a sudden, brutal movement erupted from the treeline to Vane's left.

One of the Castellane enforcers, a massive, scarred beast of a man, did not wait for an order. Driven by raw pack aggression and the sight of an unprotected human girl standing on sacred ground, the man lunged forward onto the open granite flat.

Asha gasped, staggering back a step.

In broad daylight, right before her wide, horrified human eyes, the man's body violently contorted. Muscles snapped and expanded with horrifying speed, bones cracked loudly in the crisp mountain air, and coarse grey fur burst through his bursting leather jacket. In less than three seconds, the man vanished, replaced by a monstrous, eight-hundred-pound wolf with yellow eyes and dripping, razor-sharp fangs.

The monster let out a bone-chilling roar that echoed through the valley, springing directly off the granite ledge toward Asha.

Asha froze, completely paralyzed by pure, unadulterated human terror. She had never seen a full shift in the light. The sheer speed, the horrific sound of snapping bones, the towering size of the beast, it shattered her reality.

I'm going to die here, her brain screamed.

She didn't even see Kadence move.

A dark, terrifying roar shattered the sky, louder, deeper, and infinitely more primal than the enemy wolf. Kadence didn't just step in front of her; he exploded into motion.

As he leapt into the air, his clothes ripped violently along his back and shoulders. Bones cracked and snapped in a terrifying, synchronized symphony of power. Black fur, thick as iron wire, erupted across his frame as his mass expanded into a towering, terrifying midnight-black Alpha beast easily twice the size of the Castellane attacker.

The black wolf intercepted the grey beast in mid-air.

The impact sounded like two trucks colliding at full speed. Kadence's massive jaws clamped down on the grey wolf's shoulder with sickening, bone-crushing force. He slammed the enemy wolf onto the hard granite floor, the ground vibrating violently beneath Asha's sneakers.

The grey wolf let out a high-pitched, agonized yelp as Kadence pinned him down with a single, massive paw, his jet-black tail high, his glowing golden eyes burning with pure, unadulterated murder. One quick snap of his jaw, and the grey beast went entirely limp, reverting instantly into an unconscious, bleeding human man on the stone floor.

Silence fell over the ridge, absolute, suffocating, and deathly cold.

Lord Vane took a cautious step back, his eyes wide with suppressed shock. Seraphine's polished composure completely shattered, her pale face turning as white as her silk suit.

Kadence didn't look at the Castellanes. He turned his massive, terrifying black wolf head toward Asha.

His eyes were pure, glowing gold, unnatural, predatory, and terrifying. He took two slow, heavy strides toward her, his massive paws crunching on the gravel. Asha's heart slammed against her ribs, her body shaking so violently she couldn't breathe. This was the monster her human brain had been warning her about.

As he reached her, the black fur began to recede. Muscles contracted, bones snapped backward into human alignment with wet, heavy sounds, and in a matter of seconds, Kadence lowered himself back into his human form on one knee in front of her.

He was bare-chested, covered in cold sweat, his heavy chest rising and falling violently. His dark hair fell over his eyes, and blood stained his knuckles. But his hazel eyes, softening back from glowing gold to warm amber, were fixed entirely on her trembling, terrified face.

He didn't touch her. He raised his hands slowly, keeping them palms up, completely open and defensive, showing her he was harmless to her.

"Asha," Kadence rasped, his voice rough, breathless, and broken with deep, desperate remorse. "Look at me. I'm right here. You're safe. I've got you."

Asha stared down at his bare chest, her breath coming in ragged, shallow hitches. The terror of the grey wolf was still screaming in her mind, but as she looked into Kadence's eyes, seeing his immediate, desperate surrender to her comfort, the cold panic began to thaw into something far deeper, far more terrifying, and impossible to run from.

The return to the estate felt less like a retreat and more like an armed garrison hunkering down before a storm. Heavy oak shutters were bolted shut along the lower floors, and guards in tactical gear paced the perimeter stone walls with silent, watchful precision.Inside the sprawling second-floor library, however, the world was quiet.Dust motes danced in the pale amber shafts of light streaming through the high arched windows. Asha sat at the long mahogany reading table, surrounded by stacks of ancient, leather-bound ledgers, territorial maps from the late nineteenth century, and faded parchment scrolls. She had discarded the heavy wool coat, sitting in a simple black long-sleeved shirt with her sleeves pushed up to her elbows. Her fingers were stained faintly with dry black ink.For hours, her logical, overthinking mind had been dissecting every detail of what had transpired on the border ridge. The wind sweeping over the border ridge blew cold, carrying the sharp metallic stench of fresh blood and ozone.Lord Vane Castellane stood motionless thirty yards away, his hand resting on his weapon holster, his eyes fixated on the unconscious enforcer bleeding on the granite slate. Beside him, Seraphine’s polished facade had crumbled into absolute, terrified stillness. She stared at Kadence, not as an Alpha she could manipulate with courtly politics, but as an apex predator who had just broken a full-grown wolf’s bones in under four seconds."You break diplomatic decorum, Kadence," Vane gritted out, his voice laced with suppressed rage as two of his men rushed forward to drag their fallen comrade back into their line. "You attack an envoy on neutral ground?"Kadence didn't turn around to look at Vane. He remained down on one knee on the hard gravel, his massive bare chest rising and falling in heavy, labored hitches. Sweat glistened against his tan skin, reflecting the sharp noon su

Morning arrived at the Thornwell estate not with a disciplined hum of a fortress preparing for war. Asha woke in her third-floor guest suite to the sharp scent of roasted dark coffee beans and freshly melted butter. She sat up in the high canopy bed, pulling the thick cotton duvet to her chin as her eyes darted toward the sitting area. There was no guard in her room. Instead, standing near the mahogany tea table, was Kadence. He had replaced his formal suit with dark tactical pants and a fitted black shirt that stretched taut over his broad chest. His sleeves were rolled up to his forearms, revealing thick, corded muscle and faint silver scars along his wrists. In his hands, he carried a wooden breakfast tray loaded with warm buttermilk biscuits, sliced strawberries, poached eggs, and a steaming ceramic mug of coffee. He set the tray down with a quiet, deliberate tap, then stepped back three paces toward the cold marble fireplace, keeping a comfortable distance between them. "I di

Kadence stood frozen in the arched doorway of the library. His eyes swept over her, taking in the worn canvas sneakers resting on the Persian rug, the silver key resting on the table beside the map, and the quiet, immovable posture of a human girl who had every reason to run, yet chose to stay. The heavy silence stretched between them, thick enough to suffocate a lesser man. Ronan picked up his glass of dark amber liquor, taking a slow, deliberate sip as his gaze flicked between Kadence and Asha. "I'll be on the lower terrace, Kade. The Castellanes are setting up their diplomatic camp at the eastern boundary wall." He nodded toward Asha, his tone softened. "Good night, Asha." "Good night, Ronan," Asha murmured. Ronan stepped past Kadence, pulling one of the grand oak doors shut until it settled against the frame with a quiet, heavy click. Kadence didn't move toward her immediately. He stayed ten paces back, giving her space, though his hazel eyes burned with an intense, raw heat

The open doorway felt larger than the entire room. Asha stared at the brass car keys resting on the dark wood of the tea table beside the silver phone. The engine of a high-end SUV, parked in the lower courtyard, was waiting. Outside, the world was normal. Traffic on the highway, neon signs flickering over late-night diners, her small apartment with its squeaky floorboards, a life where people didn't shift into giant beasts or speak in terms of bloodlines and pack laws. She took three steps toward the table, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. Just take the keys, her human instinct screamed. Walk down the stairs, drive through those open gates, and never look back. She picked up the keys. They felt heavy, cold, and solid in her palm. But as she turned toward the threshold, her eyes caught her reflection in the full-length mirror near the wardrobe. She was still wearing his oversized fleece jacket, drowning in his shadow, her hands trembling. If she left right
