Kieran hadn’t said a word since he saw the sigil.

Not when we rode out.

Not when we found Kael—wounded, alive, but unconscious and half-buried in the snow, the trees around him scorched like someone had tried to set the forest on fire.

Not even when I reached out to steady him and he flinched like I’d burned him, too.

So I said nothing.

Sometimes silence was the only way to keep from unraveling.

But later, after the healers took Kael and the others away, after the Council tried and failed to make sense of the summoning sigil that hadn’t been used in a century after Caspian started pacing and muttering about “impossible bloodlines” and “dead witches who weren’t so dead,” Kieran finally looked at me.

And said, “You need to be careful.”

Not we. Not us.

Just you.

Like he’d already drawn the line again.

And maybe I let him. For now.

But the line didn’t hold for long.

Three days later, the packs met.

It was supposed to be a show of strength. Unity. The Council called it a “reaffirmation gat

They came from the trees like wraiths—fast, silent, merciless.I barely had time to suck in a breath before Kieran pushed me behind him, his claws out, fangs bared, the snarl that tore from his throat making even me flinch. For a moment, I wasn’t looking at the male I’d started to trust—I was looking at the Alpha inside him. The one everyone feared. The one no one challenged. The enemy didn’t care. They struck anyway. And we were surrounded. The first hit came from the left. I ducked, rolled, and came up with a burst of energy that sent the attacker flying into a tree. He didn’t get back up.Another lunged, claws aimed for my throat.Kieran was faster. He tackled the wolf midair, slamming him into the ground with a crunch that made my stomach flip. The forest floor trembled with the force of his rage. Then came the rest.Four. Five. Six wolves. Maybe more.No insignias. No colors. But they were organized, and they were good.Which meant this wasn’t a rogue attack. This was a hit.An e

The kiss still lingered on my lips when everything started falling apart.Shouting in the halls. Footsteps thundering toward us. Magic tingling sharp beneath my skin like it had been waiting for an excuse to rise. And Kieran—God, Kieran—he was still close enough to feel the heat of him when Caspian’s voice broke through:“They’re here for her.”I thought he’d hold on. That after everything—after that night, that kiss, that moment—he’d stay. But I should’ve known better.Because the second I stepped toward the fight, Kieran stepped away.We fought side by side. Our movements were tight. Efficient. Every swing of his blade was backed by instinct. Every pulse of my magic was controlled—barely. They weren’t just wolves. They were trained, fast, and brutal. Halfmasked and halfmaddened, loyal to someone with enough power to organize an ambush on sacred territory.Whoever sent them didn’t want me dead. They wanted me taken. That was the worst part.Because they weren’t aiming to kill. They w

I didn’t feel the ground under my feet. Not really. Not after Cian said those two words.Ronan’s gone.It was like the air got sucked out of the corridor. The world narrowed to a pinpoint, and everything else blurred at the edges—Kieran’s sudden stillness beside me, the way Cian’s eyes didn’t waver, and the silence that settled over the space like a shroud.“Gone?” I asked, though I already knew. Not dead. Not captured.Just… vanished.Cian nodded, jaw clenched so tight I could practically hear his molars grinding. “His scent ends at the perimeter. No trace past that. Like he chose to disappear.”That hit harder than I expected. Not just because Ronan had been one of the few voices grounding me these past few weeks, but because part of me had started to believe he might be the only one who understood the darkness I carried. Now he was gone. And the silence he left behind was deafening.I tried not to pace, but my body didn’t listen. My magic was restless. My pulse, erratic. The storm

The first time Kieran kissed me, it wasn’t gentle. It wasn’t soft or slow or filled with hesitant pauses the way it might’ve been in a different life, a different story—one where love came easy and fate wasn’t so damn cruel. It was fierce. Desperate. Like he was trying to shove everything he felt into that moment because he didn’t want to feel any of it to begin with. And maybe I kissed him back because I didn’t want to feel it either.I’d gone to the ruins for space. Not the official ones, not the places Council elders used to offer prayers to whatever gods they claimed had teeth. This was older. More private. A collapsed circle of stones in the north woods—halfforgotten, halfswallowed by vines, and marked only by the silence that lived there. That silence had become a kind of comfort. At least until I heard footsteps.Heavy. Deliberate. Someone who wasn’t trying to sneak up on me. Someone who wanted to be heard.I didn’t turn around.“I figured you'd wait a little longer before chec

Trust is a slow poison. You don’t even realize you’ve swallowed it until it’s too late—and by then, it’s already rewriting your blood. That’s what it felt like with Kieran.I didn’t know when I started trusting him. I just looked up one day and realized I wasn’t afraid of him anymore. Not the way I used to be.And maybe that was more dangerous than any power I couldn’t control. The courtyard was quiet that morning, a strange hush stretching across the stones like even the wind knew something was changing. I stood at the edge, half in shadow, watching Kieran run drills with the younger wolves. His movements were sharp and efficient. No wasted motion, no misplaced strikes. He moved like a weapon honed too many times—beautiful, but dangerous. But there was something different now. The way he spoke. The way his eyes flicked toward the perimeter, toward me, even when he wasn’t supposed to notice I was watching. He was softer. Just a little. And that scared the hell out of everyone.“Why is
