2. Second Chance

LAIS VOLKOVA….

"So you are here, Sister." I heard Aveline's voice from behind so I looked over my shoulder to look at her.

My brows wrinkled to see her there. Because I was sitting near the cliff pondering about my life. There was no chance she would know where I was if she didn't follow me.

“What are you doing here?” I asked her, leaping to my feet.

Aveline was standing there holding a gloomy face. It was hard to tell what was going on in her mind. She looked down at her feet.

“I’m sorry, Lais. I know I hurt you badly. But trust me I didn't mean to hurt you like that.” She looked up and stared at me with her moist eyes.

She moved forward and hugged me. “You left me with no choice. I had to do that.” I was confused until I felt an extreme pain in my belly, something sharp piercing deep inside of my body. A painful gasp left my mouth as I felt her twist the blade in my belly.

“You should have left him after knowing that Jared is in a relationship with another woman. But you didn't. Instead, you got pregnant with his baby. And that was your sheer sin. You shouldn't have gotten pregnant. When I'm also pregnant with his child.” Aveline pulled away from me holding a malicious smile on her face.

Tears rolled down my eyes as I felt like dying inside with the pain. The pain I was feeling was immense. That means the silver blade she had used had something else laced with which was giving me more pain. An agonizing shriek left my mouth when she pulled the blade out of my body which felt like she pulled my soul out of my body.

“Yes, you heard me right. I'm also pregnant with Jared's child. If I let this baby of yours come into this world then what about my baby? That's why you have to die.” Saying that she had stabbed me made me gasp with pain. Blood came out of my mouth.

Then she kicked me on the belly and I found myself falling off the cliff. "Goodbye, sister. We shall never meet again. And I wish you rot in hell." Venom was dripping from her mouth with each word as she looked down waving her hand at me. I just kept looking at my beloved little sister with my tear-filled eyes. Soon my body fell into the ocean, and I felt suffocated as I found myself drowning deep in it.

"Oh, Goddess, what did I do to deserve such an agonizing death? If this is the result of goodness, then people will leave this path of goodness. What sin did I commit because of which you are giving me such punishment? I have always followed the right path. Never harm an innocent. Then why is this happening to me? Why is life so unfair to me?”

I felt my body freezing making me paralyzed. I saw black dots dancing in front of my vision. And suddenly I saw darkness engulf me in its embrace.

I woke up with a gasp and sat straight on the ground breathing heavily. My heart was pounding loudly against my ribcage. I clutched my head with my palms as I felt my head was pounding with unbearable pain.

“What happened to you, Lais? Are you feeling better?” I snapped my head at the source of the voice only to see the face of a person I detest more than anything in this world. I just lost my temper seeing Aveline sitting before me with a worried look on her face.

Seeing her face some incident flashed in my memory, “I'm pregnant with Jared’s child so you have to die.”

“I love you sister but I hate you at the same time for taking my man from me.”

"Goodbye, Sister. I wish you rot in hell.”

“You bitch.” I screamed and pushed her seething in anger and she fell back on the ground with a scream.

“Aahh!”

I didn't stop with that and lunged at her to grab her by her hair. “I will kill you today. How can you do this to me? Do you even consider me as your sister?” I yelled at her while she was only winching in pain.

“What has gotten into you, Lais? Leave your sister.” I halted when Dad’s voice fell on my ear who was trying to pull me away from Aveline. I looked up to see Dad’s face.

“Dad!” I mumbled in utter shock. He was paralyzed for three years after a rogue attack. But how come he's all good now?

Dad sat beside me and I saw some pack members taking Aveline away from there. I was still in shock to see Dad before me. He held my face tenderly in his palms and looked at me with concern.

“What happened to you, Lais? Are you feeling uncomfortable? You just fainted in between the training and after waking up you just attacked Aveline. You were never like this. What happened to you suddenly? Do you want me to take you to the hospital if you are feeling unwell?”

I was so shocked to give him any reply. I could not believe that he was sitting before me all healthy. “I'm alright Dad. I think I need to rest.” Dad smiled at me and patted my head lovingly.

“I will send you home.” Dad helped me to stand on my feet.

“You are busy, Dad. I can manage. I'm fine.” I wasn't fine at all. Because I could not understand what was happening to me.

“Okay, go back home safe.” I smiled at him while nodding at him.

Dad went back to continue the morning training and I turned around to run back home.

“What's happening to me? How come everything changes like this? What's going on? Didn't Aveline stab me and push me off the cliff? Then how come I'm alive now? Dad is also fine.” I was wondering and suddenly something caught my eye. I felt my breath catch in my throat when I saw a banner with the words ‘The 2020 Mating Ball Banquet’. I was all shaken up seeing that.

How can it be possible!!!

It's insane!!!

“How can I travel back in time? Am I dreaming? Or it was all a dream. No, no, no. 2024 can't be a dream. But how am I back in 2020? It's insane.”

I clutched my head with my hands and pulled my hair not being able to understand anything. Nothing was making sense. How can I travel back in time? It's not possible.

As soon as I reached home, I heard Mom's voice who came running to me. “Oh, my child. What happened to you dear?” Mom pulled me in a warm hug and I felt I was melting in her chest.

“I heard everything that happened in the field. Are you stressed about something? Is there something that is bothering you?” She pulled away and asked me holding my face.

“I'm fine now. And please tell Aveline not to be mad at me for that. I wasn't in my right mind at that time. I'm very guilty for my behavior.” Mom smiled at me and nodded.

"Go back to your room and have some rest. It's a special night for you. You may find your mate in the Mating ball. Alpha’s son is also coming back after finishing his training. It's a double celebration tonight. I hope you both sisters find your mate tonight.”

How can I forget this night? It was the night I regretted all my life. If I hadn't accepted him tonight then my life wouldn't be like that. I have a second chance to make things right. And this time I will not repeat the same mistake.

“Give me your blessing, Mom." I hugged her once again and walked to my room. Closing the door behind me I walked to my floor-length mirror and looked at the reflection before me.

“There is a saying, ‘You’re the heroin in your story but you're the villain in someone else's story.’ When I'm the villain in your story then let's play the role of a villain this time.” A vicious smile appeared on my face.

“Jared, you shouldn't treat me like that. You have to pay for it this time. And I will make you realize I'm not someone you can mess with. And my dear little sister, you are not gonna be spared. You will also get what you deserve. Old Lais is Dead. This new Lais is gonna amaze you.”

“You should think twice before breaking a woman's heart because you'll never know what they might become. Jared, you turned me into a person I never wished to be now, ready to bear the consequences.”

A loud bang on the door brought me back from my thoughts. And moved to the door to open it. Only to see the face I least wanted to see at that moment.

“Are you fine now? You scared the shit out of me.” Aveline said with a cute pout. She has a charm that can make men go to their knees.

“I'm sorry.” I forced a smile at her.

"It's fine as long as you are fine. Please don't do this again.” I nodded with a smile.

“Mom has sent you this dress for the mating ball. Be ready on time. Don't make me wait for you that long.” I looked at her hands and found the white ball gown in her hands. The same dress I wore at the banquet ball.

“Are you dreaming of your mate?” I came back from my thoughts hearing her voice.

“I know you are as excited to meet him today as I am. I just can't wait to meet him. Last time you couldn't find him. I hope you find him tonight. Wish you the best of luck.” She showed me a thumbs-up with a full-blown smile.

“I hope you find your mate too." She smiled ear to ear and hugged me.

"You look like an angel but you have a dark heart of a devil. I was too naive to notice it. But this time, I'm not gonna fall for it. I will make this night memorable for you both.”
