The next morning, Anna came down from her room to take her packaged breakfast from Katherine, the way she always did on each school day.

"I'll see you later, Kathy," she told her as she left the kitchen.

"Have a nice day, Belle," the woman said to her.

The uniformed girl got to the sitting room on the ground floor to receive an unnerving shock. Her dad was sitting there, looking like he was waiting for her.

"Good morning, Ameera," he said. "Can I have a word with you before you leave?"
