EVOLVING

The hospital didn't just go dark. It died. The hum of the backup generators gave one final, mechanical wheeze before the surgical wing was swallowed by a black so thick it felt like velvet.

[Warning: Emergency Power Failure.] LUS's text flared a violent, emergency red. [Acoustic Signature Detected: Hive Horde. Proximity: Imminent. Objective: REACH THE GARAGE.]

"Don't move." Ronan's voice came out of the dark, low and dangerous. I heard the snick of a tactical light being mounted to his rifle. A beam of white light cut through the gloom, revealing a hallway that was already beginning to crawl with gray static.

"I don't plan on it," Thorne's voice was too calm, too close. I felt his fingers brush my arm, sliding down to my wrist. He wasn't grabbing me for safety. He was counting. "Pulse is 110. Pupil dilation suggests a shift to the ultraviolet spectrum. Audrey, are you seeing the ledger again?"

"Doctor, get your hands off her and get behind the shield," Ronan growled, the beam of his light jerking as he swept the ceiling. "We have a Hive coming in from the laundry chutes. I can't protect you if you're playing nurse."

"I'm not playing, Sergeant," Thorne replied, his voice a cool scalpel in the dark. "I'm collecting data. Something your system seems to be struggling with."

"Enough!" I snapped. The air in the hallway was already thickening, the smell of rot and wet fur filling my lungs. "LUS, Wraith Pulse, Level 2. Give me the Siphon sweep."

[Wraith Pulse: Siphon Sweep, ACTIVE.]

The world exploded into a chaotic blur of gray and red. I didn't wait for the first Stalker to drop. I lunged.

I was a ghost in the corridor, the ten percent Agility buff making my movements liquid. The first one came low, scrabbling on all fours out of a supply closet, and I put the obsidian blade through the soft place under its jaw before it finished its lunge, then didn't wait to watch it fall, already turning into the second. That one I didn't cut. I caught it by the throat with my free hand and let the Pulse go straight through my palm, a concussive wave that folded its ribs inward like wet paper and threw what was left of it into the wall hard enough to crack the tile.

That was the rhythm I fell into without meaning to. The knife for the ones that got close enough to touch. The Pulse for the ones I could catch first. Cut, then consume. Strike, then steal. Every Stalker that came apart under my hands left a residue behind, gray and warm, and I felt it pour into me like something I'd been starving for without knowing the name of the hunger.

[Siphon Successful: +2 Strength.] [Siphon Successful: +3 Perception.] [Level 8 REACHED.]

"She's moving too fast for your cover fire, Ronan," Thorne called out, his voice unbothered by the screeching of the horde. He was keeping pace with me, moving with a clinical efficiency I hadn't expected from a man who spent his days at a table instead of a range. He stopped mid-stride as I opened a third Stalker's throat with the blade, the spray of it barely registering against the dark of my sleeve. "Wait, Audrey. Your carotid is pulsing in a sequence that shouldn't be possible."

He reached out, his hand catching my shoulder to pull me into the light of Ronan's rifle. He wasn't looking at the three Stalkers lunging for his back.

"Thorne, move!" Ronan roared. He didn't fire at the Stalkers. He charged, his heavy tactical boot catching the lead creature in the chest while he slammed his rifle butt into another, the crunch of bone under kevlar loud even over the horde's screeching. He stepped into the space between me and Thorne, his body a literal wall of Kevlar and rage. "I said, 'Hands off.'"

"She's evolving, you idiot," Thorne hissed, not flinching as Ronan fired a round inches from his ear, the muzzle flash lighting his face in a stuttering white strobe. "Look at her eyes. She isn't just killing them. She's consuming them."

I didn't listen to them. I couldn't. I was a storm of black leather and obsidian, and somewhere underneath the Pulse and the hunger, a small, distant part of me noted that neither man had stopped moving toward the danger to argue about it. That was worth something. I didn't have time to decide what.

[Siphon Bonus: +10 Stamina.] [Synergy Level Up: 15%.]

We hit the parking garage doors at a dead run. The air was colder here, smelling of wet concrete and exhaust. Ronan headed straight for a heavy, armored ambulance idling near the bay, its lights flickering.

"Get in! Now!" Ronan shouted, shoving Thorne toward the passenger side. He dove for the ignition, his fingers flying as he bypassed the security lockout. "Audrey, get in the back! I'm taking the gate!"

I stood at the rear doors, my chest heaving, the Sovereign high still vibrating in my bones. Thorne didn't go to his seat. He turned back to me, the emergency lights of the garage casting long, jagged shadows across his sharp features.

He leaned in, his voice a dry whisper that bypassed the roar of the ambulance engine.

"Your system isn't the only thing evaluating you, Audrey," he murmured. A faint, blue light flickered in his dark eyes, a UI I hadn't seen before. "I just unlocked my own interface, and you are my top priority."

Before I could process the threat, or the promise, in his voice, a sound like a thunderclap echoed through the garage.

The heavy steel door of the ambulance didn't just bend. It was torn off its hinges by a massive, clawed hand the size of a man's torso.

[CRITICAL WARNING: Apex Variant Detected.] [Class: Siege-Breaker. Level: 20.] [Liquidation Risk: 95%.]

"Drive!" I screamed, but the shadow was already lunging into the light.

The hospital hallway didn't dissolve; it hardened. The flickering fluorescent lights of the surgical wing smoothed into the steady hum of high-tier LED grids. The ER entrance was a graveyard of abandoned gurneys and shattered glass. The sterile, fluorescent hum of the hospital was punctuated by a wet tearing sound coming from the ICU stairwell.[Warning: Elite Entity Detected.] LUS snarled, the red text bleeding across my vision. [Class: Abyssal Guardian. Level: 12. Strength: 45. Defense: High. Siphon Resistance: 85%.]"Ronan," I breathed, sliding to a halt behind a triage desk. "It's not a Stalker. It's an Elite."Ronan was already down, his rifle steady against the desk's edge. "I see it. My system's flagging a hardened core. Conventional rounds won't crack it fast enough." He glanced at me, his eyes cold and clinical. "We have to link. Dual-System Overload. We didn't take the elevator. In a world where the power grid was about to become a suggestion rather than a law, elevators were just vertical coffins.Ronan moved down the stairwell with a silence that made my own footsteps feel like drumbeats. Every few floors, he'd pause, his head tilted, his crystalline blue eyes tracking shadows I couldn't see yet. He didn't look back at me, but I could feel his awareness of my position, a tactical tether that kept us anchored in the dark.[Objective: Relocate to High-Value Perimeter.] LUS hummed, the text flickering in the corner of my vision like a neon sign in a storm. The front door didn't just rattle. It groaned as the wood began to splinter under a weight that didn't care about physics.[Warning: Hostility at the Threshold,] LUS whispered, the voice now a low, predatory purr. [Asset 'Ronan' is prepared for traditional combat. Recommendation: Exceed expectations. Finalize the Wraith Pulse calibration.]I didn't wait for the door to fail. I didn't wait for Ronan to give the order. I stepped forward, the obsidian knife held low, and pulled the deadbolt myself."Audrey, wait, "I wasn't waiting for anything anymore. The door swung inward, and the thing in the hallway lunged. • APOCALYPSE QUEEN: LEVEL UP OR DIE   THE COUNTDOWN LIED

Ronan worked like a man who'd done this before, in some life or some version of this one, and it took me longer than I wanted to admit to stop watching him instead of the windows."You keep doing that," he said, not looking up from the frame he was reinforcing."Doing what.""Studying me." He set the drill down and glanced at me, that same crystalline blue, patient, unbothered, cataloging. "You've got that look. Like you already know how this ends, and you're waiting to see if I catch up."I didn't answer right away. File it, I told myself, an old habit now, useless here, because there was nothing to file. There was only the fact that I did know how at least one version of this ended, his hand on my face in a kitchen that didn't exist yet, and I had no intention of handing him that."I don't know how it ends," I said. "I know how it starts. That's different.""Convenient distinction.""It's the only one I've got."He held my eyes a beat longer than the moment required, like he was dec
