JAMES'S POV

We were almost back at the villa when my phone rang. I pulled it from my pocket and saw my PA’s name on the screen. I answered right away.

“Talk to me.”

“Mr. Blackwood, we have a serious problem with one of the major deals. A rival company suddenly activated the proxy shares tied to the project.”

I stopped walking. “Activated how?”

“They’re using the shares to interfere with the voting process. Whoever controls those proxy shares has voting power over decisions linked to the projec

JAMES'S POV “James, what’s going on?” Avery asked as I ended the call.I kept my phone in my hand, looking at the security director’s last message. He confirmed what the alert said. Daniel had escaped during federal transit, and the black SUV outside the estate belonged to Raymond Hayes.I pulled the convertible onto a quiet stretch of the coastal highway and brought it to a stop. Avery turned toward me, waiting for an explanation.“Daniel escaped,” I said. Her shock increased. “What?”“He was being transported under federal custody when it happened. My security director just confirmed it.”I showed her the alert, then pointed to the other line. “The SUV you saw outside the estate belongs to Raymond Hayes.”“Raymond Hayes?” She looked at the screen, reading the name again. “So that was his car?”“Yeah.”“Do you think he was there because of Daniel?”“I don’t know yet.” I put the phone down and turned toward her. “But I don’t like the timing. Daniel escapes, and Raymond’s vehicle sho

JAMES'S POV I found Avery standing beside the fountain, her arms folded as she watched the pathway leading to the estate gates.“What are you doing out here?” I asked, walking over. “You okay?”She turned toward me. “Yeah. I just wanted some fresh air.”I stopped beside her and followed her line of sight toward the road. “Everything all right?”“There was a black SUV parked across the road when I came out here. I couldn’t see who was inside because the windows were dark.” She pointed toward the entrance. “Then the headlights flashed twice, and it drove off.”I looked toward the gates again. “Did you recognize the car? See anybody inside?”“No. I couldn’t make out anything.”I nodded, keeping my expression casual. It might’ve been nothing, but I wasn’t going to dismiss it. We just spent the evening celebrating our wedding. I had no intention of letting some unknown vehicle turn the night into another security scare, especially with Avery standing right here.I pulled out my phone and

AVERY’S POV The reception was winding down, and people were beginning to say their goodbyes. I slipped out of the pavilion, leaving James with Mathew and the others while I went to get some air.I walked toward the garden fountain and stopped when I spotted my father and Eleanor standing near the pathway. They seemed to be getting ready to leave. I considered turning back before they noticed me, but Gerald looked up and called my name.“Avery?”I turned as he and Eleanor walked over. Neither of them seemed quite sure how to approach me, and when they finally stopped in front of me, I wasn’t sure what to say either.“Hi, Dad.”“Hi, sweetheart.” He cleared his throat and adjusted his jacket. “I, uh… congratulations on the wedding.”“Thank you.”Eleanor gave me a small smile. “Congratulations, Avery. You looked beautiful today.”“Thank you, Eleanor.”The conversation stalled. I shifted my weight, waiting to see if they had come over to say anything else. Gerald rubbed his palms togeth

AVERY’S POV The pavilion was full of laughter, music, and people moving between tables with champagne glasses in their hands. Everyone seemed determined to congratulate us before the night was over.Pa Thomas had barely finished speaking with one group before another approached him. Mathew stood near the drinks table, talking to two of James’s friends, while Sadie listened beside him.“Congratulations again,” one of the guests said, taking my hand. “You two look wonderful together.”“Thank you. I’m glad you could make it.”James stood beside me, his hand resting at my waist. He thanked the guests as they moved on, then leaned closer.“Are you enjoying yourself?”“I am. Though I think we’ve been congratulated about fifty times.”“Only fifty? We still have a long night ahead.”I laughed and accepted a fresh glass of champagne from a passing server. James took his own drink and guided me toward a quieter spot near the open side of the pavilion when another group began gathering around

JAMES'S POV Gerald shook his head and raised one hand slightly, letting us know he had nothing to say.Eleanor remained beside him without saying a word. I watched them another second, then turned back to Avery. She was still holding my hand. Her attention shifted from Gerald to me, and I gave her fingers a gentle squeeze. Whatever brought them here could wait. The officiant looked toward the entrance before returning to his place in front of us.“Shall we continue?” he asked.I looked at Avery. “You good?”She nodded. “I’m good.”The officiant opened his folder and invited us to exchange our vows. I took both of Avery’s hands, then looked at the paper on the stand beside him. I wrote my vows down earlier, but I wasn’t going to read them. There were things I needed to say to her properly, and I didn’t want a piece of paper between us.I cleared my throat.“I’ve been thinking about what to say up here, and honestly, I don’t think there’s a perfect way to put it.” A few guests smiled

JAMES'S POV I stood at the floral altar in the rose garden, waiting for Avery as the guests took their seats. Pa Thomas sat in the front row, with Mathew beside Sadie. I caught Mathew saying something to her, and she gave him a small smile before turning her attention toward the entrance. The string quartet began the bridal processional, and the remaining conversations faded. I looked toward the double doors, straightening my jacket as I waited. Our first wedding came back to me. I stood at the altar then, too, but I was more concerned with making Avery pay for a past she had no part in than with the woman I was marrying. I let my resentment dictate how I treated her, and it took more than apologies to repair the damage.Avery gave me chances I had no right to expect, and I knew that loving her meant more than standing beside her in front of our families. She needed to see that I could be the husband I should have been from the beginning. I wanted her to feel secure in the life w
