SERAPHINA’S POV.

Shadows of Betrayal

The donor papers sat on the glass coffee table in front of me like a ticking explosive.

Three hours had passed since Lucian stormed out of the penthouse. Three hours of absolute silence, save for the rain pounding violently against the glass paneled walls of the living room. I hadn't moved from the couch. My hands remained folded in my lap, cold and stiff, while the thick stack of medical releases and legal waivers stared back at me.

Every word on those pages demanded my blood, my tissue, my bone marrow. And at the bottom of the final page, right next to the red seal of St. Jude's Hospital, was Lucian’s sweeping, sharp signature. He had signed it without even asking me. He had offered my body up to save Chloe as if I were a piece of livestock owned by the Vance estate.

My phone suddenly buzzed on the glass tabletop.

The vibration was sharp, persistent, cutting through the heavy quiet of the room. I reached out with numb fingers and picked it up, expecting a call from Harrison’s legal team or the hospital prep coordinator.

It wasn't a call. It was a push notification from The Manhattan Insider, New York’s most ruthless financial gossip tabloid.

EXCLUSIVITY OR ESPIONAGE? MRS. VANCE SPOTTED MEETING OVERSEAS COMPETITOR IN PRIVATE DINING SUITE.

My heart slammed against my ribs. My thumb trembled as I tapped the notification.

The article loaded instantly, featuring a high-resolution photograph taken from a shadowy angle inside a dimly lit luxury restaurant. In the picture, a woman in a deep crimson silk gown, the exact gown Lucian’s stylist had forced me to wear to the gala leaned across a candlelit table toward a man whose face was obscured by the dim lighting. On the table between them sat a dark leather binder.

My binder. The exact sixty-page strategic restructuring plan for Vance Global that I had spent the last two months working on in isolation. The same binder Lucian had shoved back into my hands at breakfast only hours ago.

The caption beneath the photo was brutal:

"While Vance Global struggles with internal restructuring, Seraphina Vance, the mysterious, low-profile bride of titan Lucian Vance was caught passing encrypted financial documents to representatives of Sterling Global in London late last night. Insiders claim a major leak of Vance’s UK expansion strategy has already hit the European markets."

"No..." The word escaped my lips as a dry, breathless sob. "No, no, no..."

I didn't meet anyone last night. After the gala, after Harrison threatened me in that cold hallway, I came straight back to this empty penthouse. I took off that cursed crimson dress, locked myself in the bathroom, and cried until my eyes burned.

I zoomed in on the photo with shaking hands. The woman wore my hair, my build, my gown. But as I stared at the faint reflection in the glass panel behind her chair, my breath hitched in my throat.

The silhouette of the person holding the camera... the pale skin, the delicate wrist draped in a distinctive rose-gold Cartier bracelet. Chloe.

Chloe had been at the Plaza Hotel. Chloe had access to the master key codes of the Vance estate through Lucian’s security team. She had taken my rejected leather binder from the study, staged the photograph with a paid body double in a matching dress, and delivered it straight to the press to ensure my absolute execution in court.

Before I could even process the horror twisting in my gut, the private elevator doors at the end of the foyer chimed with a harsh, metallic ping.

The heavy doors slid open.

Lucian stood on the threshold.

He didn't look like the flawless, untouchable titan who had left the penthouse this morning. His charcoal suit jacket was unbuttoned, his tie pulled loose at the collar. His dark raven hair was disheveled, and his jawline was set so hard the muscles in his cheeks twitched with suppressed rage. But it was his eyes that made my blood freeze solid.

They weren't icy anymore. They were burning with a dark, terrifying fury, a fire meant to destroy everything in its path.

He didn't speak as he crossed the marble floor. His long, furious strides covered the distance between us in seconds. He snatched the phone right out of my hand, throwing it down onto the marble table so hard the screen shattered into a web of fine cracks.

"Lucian" I scrambled up from the couch, backing away until the back of my knees hit the edge of the glass table. "Lucian, listen to me, that picture

You sold us out."

His voice was terrifyingly low, a gravelly whisper that sounded like heavy stones grinding together. He stepped into my space, towering over me, his shadow completely blotting out the grey light coming through the windows.

"I didn't!" Tears finally spilled over my lashes, hot and scalding against my cold cheeks. "I didn't meet anyone! I was here! I was in this apartment all night! Someone took my binder from the study, Lucian, someone framed me!"

"Stop lying!" he roared, the sheer volume of his voice echoing off the high ceilings like a crack of thunder.

I flinched, instinctively raising a hand to protect my chest, but he caught my wrist in mid-air. His grip was tight, an iron band around my delicate bones not enough to break, but enough to pin me completely in place.

"The UK market opened an hour ago, Seraphina," he snarled, leaning down until his dark, frantic eyes were inches from mine. "Our short positions in London just lost four hundred million dollars because the exact regulatory vulnerabilities written in your little binder were leaked to Sterling Global! The board is calling for a criminal trial!"

"It wasn't me!" I cried, desperate, pulling against his iron grip while my heart hammered like a trapped bird. "Why won't you look at the evidence? Look at the bracelet in the camera reflection! It’s Chloe! She’s the one who took the folder! She’s setting me up so you’ll get rid of me!"

The moment Chloe’s name left my mouth, Lucian’s eyes darkened into something utterly ruthless.

"Do not drag her name into your filth," he hissed, his thumb digging deeper into my pulse point. "Chloe is lying in a hospital bed right now, struggling to draw air into her lungs because her body is failing! While she fights for her life, you were out selling my family's legacy to the highest bidder to get back at me!"

"I didn't..." I shook my head, my voice breaking into pathetic, desperate gasps. "Lucian, please... look at me. Look into my eyes. Have I ever lied to you? Have I ever taken a single dollar from you?"

"You took my name," he said coldly, dropping my wrist as if contact with my skin repulsed him. "And you used it to destroy me."

He stepped back, wiping his hand against his trousers with a slow, agonizing disgust that ripped the very last piece of my soul to shreds. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a thick, official envelope stamped with the emblem of the Manhattan District Attorney's office.

"I called my legal team twenty minutes ago," Lucian said, his voice dropping back into that hollow, emotionless baritone that signaled an execution. "You have two choices, Seraphina. Option one: I hand this file over to the prosecutors, and you spend the next fifteen years in a federal penitentiary for corporate espionage and grand larceny."

My knees trembled violently. "And... option two?"

Lucian picked up the gold Montblanc pen resting beside the donor papers on the table. He clicked it once and held it out to me, his dark face completely devoid of mercy.

"Option two: You sign the divorce papers. You sign the full bone marrow transfer waiver. And you walk into St. Jude's Hospital under federal guard in two hours."

I stared at the pen. The metal glinted coldly in the grey rain light.

"And if I survive the procedure?" I whispered, looking up into the eyes of the man I had spent three years desperately trying to love. "What happened to me then?"

Lucian’s lips curved into a dark, merciless smile that promised pure damnation.

"If you survive," he murmured, "I put you on a boat, and I will make sure the world forgets you ever existed.”

  • ASHES OF HER MERCY    Chapter Eleven

Seraphina Vance’s POV Code CrimsonThe ceiling was a blur of harsh, industrial white squares.Every time my eyes tried to focus on the plastic grid above me, the fluorescent lights burned through my retinas, leaving long, weeping trails of green and yellow in the dark corners of my vision. The anesthesia had dragged me down into a deep, suffocating trench, but it hadn't taken the pain away. It had only stolen my ability to scream.I was lying face down on a stainless steel surgical table. My forehead rested in a hollow foam ring that smelled faintly of old sweat and iodine. A heavy, coarse sheet was draped over my lower back, leaving my hips completely exposed to the bitter draft circulating through the room.Run, Lucian had whispered. The memory of his voice echoed in my head, distorted, sounding as if it were bouncing off the walls of a deep well. “The plane isn't taking you to Switzerland”.I tried to move my toes. Nothing happened. My legs felt like massive sacks of wet s

Seraphina Vance’ POV ‘Cold Steel’The air inside Surgery Prep Room 4 didn't feel like oxygen. It felt like aerosolized bleach, biting at the back of my throat, sharp and chemical, stripping away whatever warmth was left in my chest.I sat rigid on the metal edge of the prep table, my bare thighs pressed against the disposable paper sheet that crinkled loudly with every shallow breath I took. The thin, faded hospital gown offered no protection against the draft pushing through the industrial ventilation grates. I was cold, a bonedeep, marrow freezing cold that had nothing to do with the thermostat and everything to do with the man standing five feet away.Lucian stood framed by the glare of the corridor lights, his back pressed against the heavy double doors. His tailored jacket was gone. His white dress shirt was wrinkled, the top two buttons undone, revealing the hollow base of his throat where a pulse should have been hammering. But he didn't look frantic. He didn't look like a

Seraphina Vance’s POV ‘Price of Admission’The glass doors of the penthouse study clicked shut behind the guards, sealing the room in a heavy, unnatural silence. Outside, the city stretched toward the horizon, an ocean of flickering yellow streetlamps and crawling headlights under a charcoal sky. Inside, the only light came from the marble fireplace and the green glow of a banker’s lamp on the glass desk.Lucian was standing by the huge glass windows, his back to me. His tailored jacket was gone. His white shirt was unbuttoned at the collar, the sleeves rolled twice over his forearms. He held a crystal tumbler, but he wasn't drinking. My knees were shaking from the sedative still lingering in my bloodstream, but I refused to sit. I pressed my back against the heavy mahogany trim of the door frame, using it to keep myself upright. My hand throbbing where the nail had split during my attempt at the rotary phone, an attempt that had yielded nothing but Chloe’s laughing voice on the o

Seraphina Vance’s POV ‘The Bloodline Trap’The smell of antiseptic hit my throat before my eyes could make sense of the fluorescent glare above me. It was sharp, chemical, and suffocating.I pressed my back against the cold glass panel of the observation gallery, staring down into the intensive care unit of St. Jude’s Private Wing. Inside, wires crisscrossed over the frail chest of Chloe, my half-sister. The rhythm of the heart monitor was jagged, spiking with short, frantic beats that set off red warnings on the overhead screens."She collapsed forty minutes ago," my father’s quiet voice echoed behind me.Harrison Vance didn't touch my shoulder. He stood two paces back, his hands clasped behind his tailored coat, staring at the glass as if he were inspecting a failing investment rather than his dying daughter."She was stable yesterday, Harrison," I said, my voice barely a whisper above the low hum of the medical machinery. I was nervous and didn't trust him, so my tummy twiste

Lucian Vance’s POV ‘The Weight of Legacy’The amber drink in my hand had gone still, but my fingers were locked around it, so it tightened the glass cut into my skin.Across the heavy mahogany desk, my father didn’t raise his voice. He never did when he was tearing someone’s world apart. Harrison Vance operated in quiet sentences, the kind that settled into your chest like slow-acting poison."You look tired, Lucian," he said softly, setting his gold fountain pen onto the leather blotter. The tiny click echoed in the silent study. "And tired men make emotional choices. Emotional men destroy empires.""She isn't an emotional choice," I said. My voice sounded raspy, hollowed out by three days of running on caffeine and cold sweat. "Seraphina has been loyal to this family. She kept the Blackwood account intact when everyone else panicked. She bled for us."Harrison leaned back in his leather chair, the dim lamp catching the silver at his temples. He looked at me not with anger, but w
