Seraphina Vance’ POV ‘Cold Steel’

The air inside Surgery Prep Room 4 didn't feel like oxygen. It felt like aerosolized bleach, biting at the back of my throat, sharp and chemical, stripping away whatever warmth was left in my chest.

I sat rigid on the metal edge of the prep table, my bare thighs pressed against the disposable paper sheet that crinkled loudly with every shallow breath I took. The thin, faded hospital gown offered no protection against the draft pushing through the industrial ventilation grates. I was cold, a bonedeep, marrow freezing cold that had nothing to do with the thermostat and everything to do with the man standing five feet away.

Lucian stood framed by the glare of the corridor lights, his back pressed against the heavy double doors.

His tailored jacket was gone. His white dress shirt was wrinkled, the top two buttons undone, revealing the hollow base of his throat where a pulse should have been hammering. But he didn't look frantic. He didn't look like a man whose empire had just been struck by a federal warrant.

His face was a mask of unreadable, carved stone. His dark eyes were completely vacant, stripped of the fire, the devotion, and the fierce, quiet tenderness that had once made me feel safe in a world built on greed. He was looking at me, but he wasn't seeing me. I was a transaction being finalized. A loose end being tucked away into a sterile corner of the Vance family legacy.

On the rolling tray beside my bed, the navy blue folder lay open.

"Page four, Miss Vance," the family attorney murmured, his voice flat, monotonous, completely devoid of empathy. He didn't look me in the eye either. He just adjusted his gold rimmed glasses and tapped a manicured finger against the lower margin of the document. "Initial the bottom right box regarding the waiver of future medical liabilities, then print and sign your full legal name on line B."

My fingers trembled so violently that the black gel pen clicked against the metal tray, the sound ringing out like a small bell in the quiet room.

"Lucian," I whispered. My voice was a ruined thing, raspy and thin, scraped raw by hours of crying that had brought no relief.

He didn't move. A tiny muscle twitched along his jawline, the only sign that he was even breathing, but he kept his gaze locked onto mine with that terrifying, hollow detachment.

"Look at me," I pleaded, stepping over the edge of my pride, dragging my dignity through the dirt because some pathetic, desperate part of my soul still needed him to be real. "Look at me and tell me this is what you want. Tell me you want me stripped of my name, locked in a private clinic in Switzerland, while you pretend I never existed."

"Sign the papers, Seraphina," he said. His voice was shockingly low, a gravelly baritone that dragged across the room like heavy chains. There was no anger in it. No sorrow. Just an absolute, crushing finality. "The surgical team is waiting. We are out of time."

"Out of time for what?" I choked out, a bitter tear finally escaping my eye and tracing a burning path down my icy cheek. "To save Chloe? Or to make sure I'm under anesthesia before the SEC agents clear the lobby downstairs?"

"The terms of the agreement state that upon your signature, the trust fund activates immediately," the attorney interjected smoothly, pulling a sleek silver Montblanc pen from his pocket and laying it beside the tray as if my own pen weren't good enough. "Your legal representation in Zurich has already been retained. Mr. Vance has been more than generous despite the complicated nature of these disclosures."

Generous?

I looked down at the crisp white page. The legal jargon swam before my blurred vision: Unconditional Dissolution... Relinquishment of All Marital Assets... Irrevocable Non-Disclosure... Absolute Medical Release.

Every line was a brick in the wall they were building around me. If I signed, I gave up my right to fight the false narrative they had spun. I gave up my right to clear my name. I handed Harrison Vance the ultimate victory, my total, legally binding erasure from Lucian's life.

But if I didn't sign...

I looked at the doorway. Two armored security guards stood just beyond the glass, their hands resting casually near their belts. Beyond them lay the federal prison Harrison had promised me, a cage built from fabricated IP logs and corrupted audit trails that I had no power to dismantle from the outside.

They had engineered a trap with no exits.

"Five seconds, Seraphina," Lucian said quietly. His voice didn't rise, but the weight behind it pressed down on my shoulders until my spine bent. "Sign it, or I open that door and let the federal marshals handle this your way."

I stared at him, searching the hard lines of his face for a shadow, a crack, a sliver of the man who had held me on the balcony six months ago and promised that nothing in this world would ever come between us.

There was nothing there. Only dark, vacant ice.

A ragged breath tore through my lungs. I pressed the tip of the pen to the paper. The ink felt heavier than lead, soaking into the thick parchment as I dragged my hand across the line.

Seraphina Cross Vance.

I dropped the pen. It rolled off the tray and clattered loudly against the linoleum floor.

The attorney immediately snatched the folder, scanning the signature with a practiced, cynical eye before nodding once toward the inner door. "The documents are executed. Proceed."

The heavy door to the operating room swung open with a soft, pneumatic hiss. Dr. Jonathan Sterling stepped through, draped in sterile blue scrubs, his surgical mask hanging loosely around his neck. His hands were gloved, and in his right palm, he held a massive glass syringe filled with a thick, milky liquid.

"Everything is prepped, Miss Vance," Sterling said, his tone entirely professional, chillingly devoid of the malice he had displayed in the hallway hours earlier. "We'll be administering a mild sedative to calm your heart rate before we transfer you to the central line."

I didn't fight as two nurses stepped to either side of the prep table. They guided my shoulders down onto the cold, narrow mattress. The ceiling lights danced above me in bright, overlapping circles of white glare.

"Hold her arm steady," Sterling instructed softly.

I felt the cool swab of alcohol against the crook of my elbow. I closed my eyes, my heart hammering against my ribs like a trapped bird, counting the seconds until my freedom, my identity, and my life were formally taken from me.

"Time to go under," Sterling murmured.

The sharp prick of the needle bit into my skin. Almost instantly, a wave of liquid ice rushed up my vein, spreading through my chest, thick and heavy. My limbs turned to lead. The harsh white lights overhead began to stretch and blur, melting into long streaks of silver. The rhythmic beep of the heart monitor slowed, sounding as if it were underwater.

My eyelids grew impossibly heavy. I couldn't lift my hand. I couldn't speak. I was slipping into the dark, helpless ocean of anesthesia, leaving behind everything I had ever loved.

Through the heavy haze settling over my mind, I felt a sudden shift in the room.

A handwarm, strong, and instantly familiar cupped the side of my face. The scent of sandalwood and expensive rain cut through the suffocating smell of bleach.

Lucian leaned down over the prep table, his face blurring into view just inches from mine. His hand was trembling against my cheek, his thumb brushing away the wet tear trail on my skin with a desperate, frantic pressure I hadn't felt from him in months.

The stone mask was gone. His eyes were wide, bloodshot, filled with a terrifying, agonizing storm of grief and raw fury.

He bent his head lower, his lips brushing the shell of my ear as the dark swallowed the edges of my vision.

"Run," he whispered. "The plane isn't taking you to Switzerland."

Seraphina Vance’s POV Code CrimsonThe ceiling was a blur of harsh, industrial white squares.Every time my eyes tried to focus on the plastic grid above me, the fluorescent lights burned through my retinas, leaving long, weeping trails of green and yellow in the dark corners of my vision. The anesthesia had dragged me down into a deep, suffocating trench, but it hadn't taken the pain away. It had only stolen my ability to scream.I was lying face down on a stainless steel surgical table. My forehead rested in a hollow foam ring that smelled faintly of old sweat and iodine. A heavy, coarse sheet was draped over my lower back, leaving my hips completely exposed to the bitter draft circulating through the room.Run, Lucian had whispered. The memory of his voice echoed in my head, distorted, sounding as if it were bouncing off the walls of a deep well. “The plane isn't taking you to Switzerland”.I tried to move my toes. Nothing happened. My legs felt like massive sacks of wet s

Seraphina Vance’s POV ‘Price of Admission’The glass doors of the penthouse study clicked shut behind the guards, sealing the room in a heavy, unnatural silence. Outside, the city stretched toward the horizon, an ocean of flickering yellow streetlamps and crawling headlights under a charcoal sky. Inside, the only light came from the marble fireplace and the green glow of a banker’s lamp on the glass desk.Lucian was standing by the huge glass windows, his back to me. His tailored jacket was gone. His white shirt was unbuttoned at the collar, the sleeves rolled twice over his forearms. He held a crystal tumbler, but he wasn't drinking. My knees were shaking from the sedative still lingering in my bloodstream, but I refused to sit. I pressed my back against the heavy mahogany trim of the door frame, using it to keep myself upright. It was sharp, chemical, and suffocating.I pressed my back against the cold glass panel of the observation gallery, staring down into the intensive care unit of St. Jude’s Private Wing. Inside, wires crisscrossed over the frail chest of Chloe, my half-sister. The rhythm of the heart monitor was jagged, spiking with short, frantic beats that set off red warnings on the overhead screens."She collapsed forty minutes ago," my father’s quiet voice echoed behind me.Harrison Vance didn't touch my shoulder. Lucian Vance’s POV ‘The Weight of Legacy’The amber drink in my hand had gone still, but my fingers were locked around it, so it tightened the glass cut into my skin.Across the heavy mahogany desk, my father didn’t raise his voice. He never did when he was tearing someone’s world apart. Harrison Vance operated in quiet sentences, the kind that settled into your chest like slow-acting poison."You look tired, Lucian," he said softly, setting his gold fountain pen onto the leather blotter. The tiny click echoed in the silent study. "And tired men make emotional choices. Emotional men destroy empires.""She isn't an emotional choice," I said. My voice sounded raspy, hollowed out by three days of running on caffeine and cold sweat. "Seraphina has been loyal to this family. She kept the Blackwood account intact when everyone else panicked. She bled for us."Harrison leaned back in his leather chair, the dim lamp catching the silver at his temples. He looked at me not with anger, but w
