Chapter 9
Aurora's POVSeeing Matteo protect me last night, with his teeth clenched in anger and his muscles flexing visibly from his black dress shirt, I felt a natural sense of belonging. My mind scowled at the thought that I was enjoying Matteo's attention but my heart clamored for it.I stretched under my covers and sat up, fluttering my eyelids. My gaze darted towards the clock which showed that it was past 8am.I scrambled away from the covers and tossed on my night robe. Breakfast was supposed to be ready before 7am, but thanks to Matteo I was late. For a strange reason, I wasn't scared of what Matteo or his brother would say, rather my heart thudded in anticipation of what Ginevra would do. Her deep glare and scathing look was scary enough to make a sinner repent. I wondered how Ilaria coped with her before I came.Surprised washed over me when I climbed quickly down the stairs, gripping the rail for support as I got to the last row to meet the table set.My legs moved faster on their own accord, with a questioning expression plastered on my face. Angelo glanced at me and shook his head, twitching his lips. I became self conscious of my face and touched the nook of my eyes to be sure that there wasn't any dirt there."You slept for so long that you forgot your duties," Ginevra started with a condescending tone and a disapproving look.Matteo joined us and exchanged brief glances with her. He wore a polo and a pair of deep blue joggers which fitted loosely around his thighs."It wasn't her fault. Don't blame her," He said and dug into his toast.I smiled briefly, grateful that he said something in my defense."But she didn't wake up on time so that she could prefer dinner for you and Angelo Matteo, that is a sign of irresponsibility." Ginevra snarled and this time Matteo banged the table with a glowering expression."Drop the case, Ginevra. I've told you not to blame her. You can go back to whatever you are doing or join breakfast.""I'm sorry, Matteo." She apologised and cast a glare at me with her nose in the air then walked away, her heels clicking away.I fiddled with my fingers and thought of what to say to both brothers. There wasn't any plea for me to say to them because it was truly their fault. "Good morning, Matteo, Angelo."Angelo nodded with his attention fixed to his Tablet while Matteo stared at me with a soft look in his eyes. He motioned for me to sit down but the idea didn't go down well with me because I haven't brushed my teeth or even had a shower."I don't think it's a good idea," I opposed, covering my night dress with the edge of the robe."Why don't you think so?" He smirked and dropped the remaining toast on the chinaware, and took a sip from his cup. I didn't need to be told that it was black coffee."I'm telling you as your boss and Capo of the Outfit." He demanded.I nearly rolled my eyes, and told him that he wasn't my Capo, only my late father will ever be. But that would make him suspect and keep closer tabs on me.Angelo stood up with his tablet and whispered in my ear, "It's weird that my brother is asking you to sit with him, he has never done that with any staff before so listen to him. And I'm also sorry for leaving you last night,"He didn't wait for my reply before he sauntered away. My eyes followed him out of the dining room, he would be my hardest kill because of how nice he was.I walked slowly to Matteo and sat on Angelo's chair since he was sitting on the first chair which was meant for the man of authority in the house."It took you so long to sit with me. Aren't you hungry?""Not yet. I'm messed up, my hair is tousled and I need to clean myself. So breakfast is the last thing on my mind right now," I admitted. He chuckled and his eyes roved over my hair, then my face. It held admiration instead of the disgust that I was searching for on his face."I called you here to know your decision about the dinner I proposed last night," His eyes were keen for a reply as he pushed the toast away and wrapped his hands around the coffee cup."Matteo, I was asleep. How did you expect me to think while sleeping?""You're awake now, so tell me your answer."I looked around everywhere in the room but him. Going on dinner dates would lead to something more complicated and by the time I'd realize what was going on, I'd be lost in their world and the reason for being here, forgotten."I will go with you." I was shocked with my response but going on a date with Matteo felt good in a certain way and I wanted us to be close so that I'd be able to strike him easily.*********My uncle's phone kept ringing but he wasn't picking up which got me worried. He never ignored my call on purpose except when he was extremely busy.I moved away from the window sill where we usually talked and returned to the bed to think of what I'd wear when my phone vibrated. My lips stretched in a smile when I saw that it was my uncle."Hi, Uncle." I greeted excitedly, jerking off the bed and returning to my formal spot."Are you doing well, Aurora?" His voice was controlled as usual but there was no denying that he was very concerned about my well-being."I'm fine, Uncle. It's just that things aren't going as planned and Matteo isn't as cold as I thought him to be. He has a charming personality as well." I confessed.Killing a murderer was hard but when you took revenge on his children it was harder because they had nothing to do with their parents' crimes. But that didn't matter to me, I wanted Aldo Moretti to roll on his grave when he sees that the Outfit is without a Capo and his sons are lying beside him in death."You thought him to be just a cold fish, didn't you?"Apparently that was the only description I had in my head while stuffing my box with clothes and taking the next flight to New York."Yes I did. But he is a mixture of both.""Then use it against him and you will give him a gruesome death because he is crossing his boundaries.""What do you mean by boundaries, Uncle?" My ears perked with interest and my heart palpitated because of what he was about to say."He is planning to take over the Camorra completely. We both know that he has some of his men who are supplying drugs through the Neapolitan route. The Camorra doesn't have a truce with the Outfit so it is trespassing, but Matteo doesn't care because he is a daredevil." He explained. My chest was constricted by his words, I wasn't just scared of him succeeding in his plans, I was also scared of what he'd do to me if he discovered my identity."So what is going to happen now?""The Camorra still has loyal soldiers and even though I didn't want to be a part of this revenge plan, I won't be happy seeing your father's hard work go to the drain because I want peace." He sighed after saying those words, but I could sense the anger that followed them."What am I going to do?" I asked with a clipped voice."Get closer to him so that you can know his plans, and also try to make him push his plans forward so that we can have enough time to strike. Do you understand?""Yes, I'll do all that."I ended the call and deleted the call log immediately."So what are the things you are planning to do?" A deep feminine voice cut through my thoughts.Chapter 10Aurora's POVI swirled around to find Ginevra glaring at me with a disapproving scowl, while I met her icy stare with a look of nonchalance. If she thought that she could intimidate me into saying anything that I didn't want to say to her then she had to be joking. "What are you planning to do?" She reiterated. "Nothing that concerns you, Ginevra. Am I not allowed some privacy in this house?" I tilted my lips to the side with a cocky stare. She was thrown off balance by my response but I didn't care. Someone needed to put her in her place and I was willing to do it wholeheartedly. She turned the door knob, pushing the door quietly as I gasped. If I knew that she was this discreet, I'd have locked the door before making the call but that would have only brought more suspicion.I moved away from the window and clutched tightly to my phone. I couldn't understand what set my body on edge whenever I was around her, and my instincts always gave me a bad signal when she was ne
Chapter 11Matteo's POV My attention got depleted the moment I saw Aurora taking off the robe she had on when she got to the pool. At that point, I wanted nothing more but to rip her bra and thong off and make her come in the most violent way possible. I couldn't deny that seeing Angelo stung me with jealousy but he was my younger brother, and he wouldn't go after whoever he knew that I liked. I held back because I didn't want to be too forward and behave like I was a sucker for her. So I delved into my work and got interrupted by a phone call from Francesco. "Good morning boss," He greeted in his usual rumble. "Morning, Francesco." I replied and clicked on my mouse to go through a review that was sent to me. "I've got news from our allies. Some other gangs has promised to give our support in claiming the Neapolitan territory, but they said that we have to give them more time." He paused. One of the reasons I liked working with Francesco was his ability to go straight to the po
Chapter 12Matteo's POV My lips parted as she kept muttering the name over and over again. "Is that your uncle?" I asked softly and she snapped her lips shut and made an attempt to sit up but it failed as she winced. "Are you alright?" I stood up from the edge of the bed and sat beside her. Her body tensed then relaxed as she breathed evenly again. Her bright eyes were squinted as she kept her lips pursed. "Thank God, she's getting better. I want to know who will be in charge of her medications." Doctor Luca asked and I raised my hand with enthusiasm then dropped it when I realized that I was being too obvious. "I don't want her to waste your time and effort and someone needs to ensure that she's back on her feet to prepare breakfast tomorrow, so I'll do it." I offered. Ginevra sneered, then said, "Another day of lazing around." I gave her a look that reminded her that I was Capo which shut her mouth. She hadn't seen me torturing people before or dishing out punishments and the
Chapter 13Aurora's POV I slowly got up from the bed and drew away the covers, reducing the level of the air conditioner with the remote I found on the bed stand. My mind flashed back to my collapse at the pool and I wondered why I fainted. The last time I swam, I had the same experience but it wasn't this severe. All the same I was happy that Angelo was there to help me, and then Matteo, he held onto me like I was a treasure about to be lost. The single act tore a chunk off the walls I'd surrounded myself with. But that wasn't what I wanted, I needed to be done with my revenge and move on with my life. I scanned the room slowly, then realized it wasn't mine. I'd noticed that I wasn't in my room when I woke up but I blamed it on my collapses, but now that I felt better, the ambience was quite different and the size was bigger than mine. My eyes were still scrutinising the room when the door swung open, causing me to jolt in surprise. Matteo closed the door as he got in and stared
Chapter 14Aurora's POV I couldn't deny that Matteo's rebuff hurt me more than a dagger thrust into my heart. Maybe I was hoping for too much and I failed to realise that nothing romantic could ever happen between us, not even the dinner he asked for. My mind flashed back to the sparring match and wondered why he wanted to fight with his brother. I didn't see Angelo as a violent person, but then, he was a descendant and the second son of Aldo Moretti. Violence ran through his veins. Sparring matches weren't new to me since we had lots of them where I came from, but I wanted to know how it went so I headed for the kitchen where I'd find Ilaria. I worried about how Matteo would fight with his injured hands, then I shook off the feeling of worry. It wasn't my business. "Are you busy?" I asked, putting on my apron. Matteo asked me not to cook but I wasn't sure I could obey his order and stay away from the kitchen when I wasn't lying on a hospital bed. She jolted at my voice and near
Losing control Matteo's POV There was only one person who had that voice but I doubted she was the one. Maybe I'd thought about her too much and it made me hallucinate about her presence. The overwhelming rush of Adrenaline which surged through my veins came to a halt, and then I stared at my brother who wore a wary expression mixed with disappointment and glints of anger. I gasped, feeling hurt and angry at myself. How could I have thought of hitting my younger brother so hard? He was the only family I had. The arena which was calm because of the scream went agog with loud whispers and soon they turned into angry rants as a woman tried to force her way through. I squinted my eyes to be sure that I wasn't hallucinating again but it was her, Aurora, forcing her way through the crowd like an angry lioness. Her resilience marveled me even though I was pissed that she went against my order. I motioned for the referee to come closer and he bowed his head so I could tell him what to
Chapter 16Matteo's POV My eyes almost burned with tears when I got into the room he was kept in and I saw his face scrunched in pain as they tried to relocate his arm to its position. I did that!! And I'd have done more if Aurora didn't stop me. "You'll be fine, I promise." I said to Angelo who ignored me and shut his eyes. "You were going overboard, brother. That wasn't supposed to be a death match, you just wanted us to spar like the old times and everyone goes home. I can never trust you again," He lashed out and panted. "I promise I'll tell you what happened, but focus on recovering for now." I called Doctor Luca aside who is in charge of the medical team. "There's no other real damage apart from the dislocation, right?" He shook his head, "There isn't. I only sent one of my team members to call you because your brother was tense and he said that we shouldn't commence treatment if you aren't around." My lips stretched into a tired smile. Even with his outburst, he still w
Chapter 17Aurora's POV I stretched my arms from the restless sleep I had and jumped out of the bed. My mind couldn't accept to rest after everything that happened last night so I stood up and brushed my teeth. Since I left my uncle's house, I hadn't done any exercise or even jogged in the morning which was unlike me. I tossed on a black crop top and a matching pair of joggers then packed my messy hair into a ponytail. As I left my room, I heard some voices, from the wing opposite the direction of my room which belonged to Angelo. It wasn't loud enough to warrant attention, but as usual, I let curiosity take the lead. When the door creaked open, I ran towards the hallway quickly and headed for the gate. Matteo's house arrest could kiss my jogging ass. "Where are you going?" I heard when I got to the gate and turned around to stare at the person who caused me to halt my steps. Matteo stood by the window with a questioning look and a running outfit as well. It was still early and
