“It’s been moved to another director,” he said, as if I’d misheard him the first time. “I had an early meeting with her this morning, actually. We were discussing rollout timelines, campaign design... all of that.”

A cold silence hung between us. I blinked once, then again. My voice came out low, almost mechanical. “Reassigned? What are you talking about? That’s my project. I didn’t reassign it to anyone.”

Jacques looked uncomfortable, and for once, it didn’t seem like an act. “Look, I’m just following the directives I get, Mr. Remington. The update came from… upstairs.”

There it was again. Upstairs. How quickly those ten letters had come to represent everything I hated.

“You’re telling me,” I said slowly, “that you accepted a change in leadership on one of my campaigns without even informing me?”

ConradMy mother's secretary—Teresa or Theresa or some other name I’d never bothered to learn—jumped to her feet the moment she saw me storm down the hall like a man possessed. “Sir! Director Remington, your mother is currently in a meeting. If you’ll just give me a—”I didn’t stop walking.“—minute, I’ll go in and let her know you’re here—”I think she reached out to stop me. Poor girl, she probably thought her job description included throwing herself in front of angry men. I turned my head just slightly, and the glare I gave her must have spoken volumes, because she shrank back a step like I was about to physically barrel through her.The door to my mother’s office was closed, but I didn’t knock, but threw it open hard, the brass handle slamming into the wall with a thud that was immensely satisfying. She wasn’t alone. Seated across from her was none other than Simon Hughes, her personal lapdog with a law degree. He turned at the sound of the door, brows lifted in calm surprise, an

ConradEnough was enough.I sat at my desk, the tension in my jaw so tight I thought something might snap. The whole mess with Karah’s team still clung to me like a bad stench, and no matter how many times I replayed Leonard’s words in my head, it didn’t make the sting any better. The sheer audacity of my mother still boiled in my blood. I had worked for months to secure that deal, prepped the product line myself, and even sat through Karah’s unbearable entourage of managers and stylists with that stupidly charming smile on my face. And for what? So my mother could yank it all from under me because it didn’t fit into her masterplan?I wasn’t a boy anymore. And if I didn’t push back now, then it wasn’t just my mother I needed to be worried about. It would be everyone under me; every manager, every executive, every assistant. They would all see that Conrad Remington was a puppet, dancing to the strings of the queen upstairs.I had to act fast, before this narrative solidified and before

ConradI lowered the phone slowly, blinking at it as if it had betrayed me. Then I set it down on my desk and leaned back in my chair, staring up at the ceiling like it might have some kind of answer for me. Mother really did it. She had tanked my deal. And for what? To prove that I still danced on her strings? That even in the parts of the company she never cared about, her hand could still reach in and undo everything I worked for? The rage that bubbled up was slow but steady. Did she really want me powerless? To remind me I was nothing without her? Suddenly, my anger exploded. I picked up my phone and flung it. It landed halfway across my office with a sharp, echoing thud, but the action did nothing to quiet the fury boiling in my chest. My own mother had gone behind my back and sunk the damn deal with Karah’s team, just like that. Not because of strategy, not even because of genuine concern for the company, but because she could. Because she wanted to remind me that she c

Conrad By the time my car pulled a stop in front of the company building, I was surprised that I was looking forward to going into work that morning. It was ridiculous. When had I ever looked forward to a full day of reports and meetings? But today, all that sounded like a relief from the angry thoughts swirling in my head about my mother. As I stepped into the building, nodding at a few familiar faces, I did my best to ignore the pit in my stomach at the gazes of dozens of the employees I could feel looking at me. I needed blunt, measurable work, something I could focus on. I chuckled at that thought as I pushed open the glass doors of my office and nodded to my secretary, Mary (or was it Mira?), who greeted me with her usual brisk nature. “Morning, sir,” she said, bowing her head slightly. “Morning,” I said, still amused with myself, as I breezed past her. I stepped into my office, closed the door behind me, and took a deep breath. I tossed my coat over the arm of the couch a

ConradI woke up with my head pounding like it had been caught between two clashing cymbals. My mouth was dry, my throat was scratchy, and the bitter taste of last night’s whiskey still coated my tongue. I blinked against the morning light slipping through the blinds, not yet ready to sit up but too uncomfortable to keep lying down.It took me a few seconds to remember why I had drunk myself into a stupor the night before. But once the memory came, it came in full, unforgiving force; the memory of my mother, her eyes gleaming with veiled threat, her words sharp and smug as she told me that this entire farce, this war she was insistent on waging against Alexander now, was for my own good. That was what enraged me the most, even now, more than forty eight hours after she had spoken them. Those words, for my own good, as if I didn’t already know what was at stake. As if I was some blundering idiot unaware of how legacies worked, or how delicate my position in the Remington family could b
