Chapter 78

Richard's Pov

“What the heck just happened?” I asked Max in frustration, staring at the now-blank screen of his laptop.

“The son of a bitch just shot me off,” he muttered, rubbing his temples as his fingers hovered above the dead keyboard.

“Damn!” I hissed, slamming my palm on the table. The metallic clang echoed through the warehouse like a judge’s gavel.

“These guys are crazy good,” Max muttered, shaking his head. “This is my second encounter with them. Same pattern, same tricks. Instant shutdown, clean cut, zero trace.”

“So, you're seriously telling me that after nearly three hours of decoding, tracing, and narrowing it all down… we’re back to square one?”

“Seems like it, Richie.”

I clenched my jaw. The silence that followed felt like it was pressing in on all sides. The warehouse, once filled with the hopeful hum of machines, was now dead quiet.

“Come on, let’s take a walk,” Max said suddenly, grabbing his jacket.

I frowned. “A walk?”

He didn’t respond—just shot me a l

Chapter 106Lily's PovMy heart raced as the phone call ended, the screen of my phone staring back at me with nothing but the lingering silence. “Hello? Mark?” I tried again, my voice tight with uncertainty. The voice on the other end had been distorted, muffled, and completely unrecognizable, but there was something eerily familiar about it. I couldn’t place it, but something deep inside me told me I’d heard that voice before.I waited, hoping for some response. But all I got was the same dead silence.I felt a chill sweep through me as I ended the call, staring at the phone screen. Four times. This was the fourth time I had received a call like this in the past few days—unfamiliar numbers, all followed by silence. What the hell was going on?“Who was that?” Mia’s voice cut through the silence, her brows furrowed in concern.I shook my head, still trying to process everything. “I seriously don’t know who the heck that was.” My voice cracked slightly, frustration and fear boiling under

Chapter 104Lily's Pov The message from Mark hit me like a ton of bricks. I hadn’t expected to see his name on my phone again, not after everything that had happened between us. His message was short, but it sent a chill down my spine:Lily, I’m coming back for you. Don’t think I’ve given up on you. I’ve got eyes watching you everywhere. My heart skipped a beat. What did he mean by "eyes watching me everywhere"? Was he the one behind the attack? I shook my head in doubt. No. Mark wasn’t capable of murder. He might have been many things—obsessive, possessive, a little too intense—but not a killer. Not this.I couldn’t wrap my mind around it. If he had been watching me, what did he want? What was his game? And why was he sending me messages like this now? It was like he was trying to unsettle me, to remind me of his control over my life.I set my phone down on the desk, my thoughts spinning, when suddenly, my phone rang again. The number was unfamiliar—another unknown number. I answere

Chapter 104Lily's PovA few days ago, Richard came home looking more frustrated than I had ever seen him. His usual composed demeanor was shattered, replaced by an intensity I hadn’t quite witnessed before. He stormed through the door, his jaw clenched, and when I met his gaze, I could feel the weight of something dark hanging in the air. He was upset, and it was more than just a bad day. Something big had happened.Without saying a word, he walked straight into the living room and collapsed onto the sofa, running a hand through his hair. I could sense the storm brewing inside him. He was the kind of man who rarely showed vulnerability, but this time, there was no hiding it.“What’s wrong?” I asked, my voice soft, but filled with concern. It wasn’t often that Richard let his guard down, so I knew this had to be serious. He let out a frustrated sigh, then threw his hands up in exasperation. “Damn! We lost the only freaking lead we had to finding out who the heck wanted us out of the w

  • Abandoned by my ex, I accept his boss proposal    The Unexpected Gunshot

Chapter 103Richard's Pov The tension in the air was palpable as I sat in the car, the latest message from the unknown number burning a hole in my mind. The message was short and direct, but it was the one thing that kept running through my thoughts: "You’re getting too close, Richard. If you think you can stop me, you’re wrong. This ends when I say it does."I had known this wasn't going to be easy. From the moment the gunshot rang out last night, I’d known this person wasn’t playing games. The question now was who had been pulling the strings. Whoever it was, they had the resources, the connections, and the ruthlessness to make this personal.Detective Morris was seated beside me, his hands clenched in his lap, his face set in a grim expression. He knew what was at stake, and I knew we both had something to prove. But for now, we had to stay focused on the task at hand: getting answers.“Let’s get into my car, Detective. We’ll know exactly how to go about this once we’re in,” I sai

  • Abandoned by my ex, I accept his boss proposal    The Lead

Chapter 102Richard's Pov My mind couldn’t settle. It kept spinning, relentlessly turning over every possible theory, every possible face, every person I had encountered in the last few months. Who could possibly want me and Lily dead because of our relationship? Was it Mark? Sam? One of the numerous women who had tried to insinuate themselves into my life over the years? Or was it someone entirely different—someone whose presence I hadn’t even noticed? The questions swirled, and yet no answers seemed clear. All I knew was that whoever was behind this had gone too far. A gunshot, a cryptic message, and now another ominous call. It wasn’t just about a random threat anymore. It felt personal. And personal meant dangerous. The attack last night was the wake-up call. We weren’t just being followed; we were being hunted. And the shadow that had been lurking in the corners of our lives had finally stepped into the light. Whoever this was, they were willing to go to any length to make sure

  • Abandoned by my ex, I accept his boss proposal    The Enemy's Call

Chapter 101Richard's PovWe got home in one piece. The silence of the house was deafening as I walked Lily up to the bedroom. After everything that had happened—the gunshots, the cryptic message, the threat that loomed over us—I felt like I was carrying the weight of the world on my shoulders. But as we reached our room, I was determined not to let it show.“Go ahead and get some rest, Lily,” I said, my voice calm, though my mind was far from it. “We’ll figure this out tomorrow.”Lily nodded, but I could see the exhaustion in her eyes. She had been through as much as I had—and more, considering this was her first taste of the dark side of my world. I knew it had shaken her, but there was strength in her that I couldn’t ignore. She wasn’t backing down, even if the fear still lingered beneath the surface. As she disappeared into the bathroom to freshen up, I quickly checked the security feeds from the various cameras around the house. It was all clear. Our security team had already rev
