The Weight of Decisions

Chapter Five:

As I put my phone down, I heard the familiar buzz of an incoming message.

I checked it, and it was from Richard.

“Lily, you can start off on Monday. There is a project at hand.”

I stared at the message for a long moment, trying to process it. That was fast. I had just met Richard a few hours ago, and now he wanted me to start immediately? No interviews, no further meetings, just a direct offer to jump into a project at Vanguard Enterprises.

The sense of excitement was overwhelming, but it was also tinged with confusion. Was I ready for this? Was this the right move? Was I really prepared to step into a role like this, so soon after everything that had happened with Mark? I had spent so much time doubting myself, questioning every choice, and now here I was—standing on the edge of a decision that could change my entire life.

Before I could let myself spiral into another round of self-doubt, a sudden knock at the door snapped me out of my thoughts.

I opened it to find Mia standing there, her worried eyes scanning me immediately. “Lily, is everything alright? You sounded worried in your message.”

I stepped aside, allowing her in. “Oh! Mia, I don’t know. I mean, everything is moving so fast. It feels like I'm standing at the edge of a cliff, about to take a leap into something huge, but I’m not sure if I’m ready.”

Mia tilted her head, her brow furrowing as she followed me to the couch. She sat beside me, crossing her legs and leaning in with a look of concern. “What are you talking about, Lily?”

I let out a shaky breath, feeling the weight of the decision pressing down on me. “Richard… he just messaged me. He wants me to start on Monday. There’s a project he wants me to handle. That’s... that’s really fast, Mia. I barely know him, and now I’m supposed to just dive in? It’s like everything is happening at once. I don’t know if I’m making the right choice.” And there is Mark, he called me today to accuse me of stalking him. "

"stalking him, how? listen to me Lily,Mia’s eyes softened as she leaned back, her expression thoughtful. “Lily, this is huge. It’s a big opportunity, one that most people would dream of. But why do you feel like you’re not ready?”

“I don’t know. I guess it’s because I feel like I’m running away from my problems with Mark, and into something... unknown. I don’t know if I’m doing this because I believe in myself, or because I just want to escape.” I felt the vulnerability rising in my chest as I spoke, the fear that had been gnawing at me coming to the surface.

Mia placed a comforting hand on mine, her touch grounding. “You’re not running away from anything. You’re moving toward something. You’re choosing to build a future for yourself, Lily. You’ve spent so long letting Mark control you, telling you who you were and what you were worth. But this job? It’s about you. This is your chance to step out of his shadow, to prove to yourself that you are enough, no matter what he thinks.”

I took a deep breath, her words hitting me harder than I expected. You are enough.

“But what if I’m wrong?” I whispered. “What if I can’t handle it? What if I mess up? What if I’m just pretending I’m ready when I’m not?”

“You’re never going to feel completely ready, Lily. Life doesn’t work that way. But you’re strong. And you’re smart. And I know you’re capable of so much more than you give yourself credit for.” Mia’s words were warm, but also filled with that fire of belief she always had in me. She’d been my rock for years, and sometimes, all I needed was to hear her say the things I couldn’t admit to myself.

I wiped my eyes, feeling a little silly for letting the emotions overwhelm me. “Thanks, Mia. I needed to hear that.”

She smiled softly, squeezing my hand. “You know I’ve got your back. No matter what, Lily. But this—this is your moment. Don’t let anything or anyone hold you back.”

I nodded, feeling the weight of my fears begin to lift, just a little. I had a choice. And while it was terrifying, it was also exciting. This could be my chance to build something entirely mine. It didn’t have to be perfect. It just had to be mine.

Mia stayed for a while, chatting about other things, helping me get out of my head. But as the evening wore on, the excitement returned. The more I thought about Vanguard, about Richard’s message, the more I could feel myself getting ready for what was to come.

And then, as the night grew quiet, there was a knock at my door. . My heart jumped, not expecting anyone .

"Are you expecting someone?" Mia asked

"Not at all."

Chapter 71Richard's Pov I never thought Samantha still had so much effect on me until she said those words. Her voice, soft yet filled with a desperate hunger, pierced right through the calm I had worked so hard to build around myself. I felt the connection — the old spark, the pull, the raw lust — but I’m not stupid or weak enough to betray Lily like this. Sam is my past. She should remain there, buried in memories I’ve long tried to forget.“What did you just say?” I asked, needing to be sure I heard her correctly. It sounded almost surreal. She bit her lip nervously, her eyes flickering between hope and fear. “Richard... please. Make love to me. I need to feel your touch. I need you, Richie,” she said shamelessly, like the past was alive again, right there between us.I stood up from the chair, creating distance between us. The room suddenly felt smaller, suffocating. How could she be so bold? Did she think I would betray Lily — the woman who had given me her trust, her love? I s

Chapter 70Richard's Pov My phone rang late that evening. A number I didn’t recognize flashed across the screen. I thought about ignoring it, but something inside me said “pick it up.”“Hello?” I said cautiously.“Richard, please… I need to talk to you. Please don’t say no to me,” came the voice—shaky, tearful, and unmistakably hers.“Samantha?” I asked, heart tightening in my chest before I could stop it.“Richard, I’m sorry, but I need someone to talk to. I’m losing my mind. I know I’m the last person you want to hear from, but you and I… we’ve been through a lot. You’re the only one I can talk to right now.”I sat up straight. My heart was torn in two. Part of me wanted to hang up. The other part—the part that remembered how we used to laugh till our stomachs hurt—was deeply concerned.“Where are you?” I asked after a moment. “Send me your noaddress. I’ll be there soon.”The moment she opened the door, I was hit by a storm of emotion. Her eyes were red and puffy, her face pale, ha

Chapter 69Lily's PovAs much as I wanted to dismiss the message I got from Mark about Richard not being who I thought he was… I just couldn’t. Every time I closed my eyes, Mark’s words replayed in my head like a broken record. “He’s not who you think he is, Lily. He had everything to do with my resignation.”But that couldn’t be true, right?I tried to brush it off, clinging tightly to the belief that Richard was different—honest, kind, the man I trusted with my heart. Still, something deep within me stirred with doubt. That night, he left work before me. He didn’t even wait like he usually did. “I’ve got a business thing to handle,” he had said. So casually. So quickly. But what business? And more importantly, with who?I got home before him, something that rarely happened. The mansion felt empty in a way that chilled me. I sat on the edge of the couch, staring blankly at my phone, rereading Mark’s message. It wasn’t just the words that bothered me—it was the timing. Why now? What d

Chapter 68Lily's Pov“What’s wrong, Richard?” I asked, watching as he sat on the edge of the bed beside me, his shoulders tense and his eyes distant. He ran a hand through his hair and sighed. “I got a call from one of the executives. Mark tendered his resignation letter today.”“He resigned?” The words escaped me sharper than I meant, and my reaction must have shown on my face because Richard gave me a long, unreadable look.“Yes. So I was told,” he said, his voice low, almost flat.“But why would he do that?” I asked, still struggling to process it. “He’s been working with you for over three years. He was committed. Why would he suddenly resign?”Richard shrugged. “It is a shame, though. He was dedicated to his work. But if you ask me…” He paused, looking straight ahead. “I guess he couldn’t stand the fact that he lost you.”I shifted uncomfortably under the blanket. Mark and I had a past, yes—but that was all it was: the past.“You know,” Richard continued, “he was one of my most

  • Abandoned by my ex, I accept his boss proposal    Fighting Back

Chapter 67Lily's PovIt has been over two weeks since I had that intense conversation with Richard about the nasty rumors flying around — the whispers that I slept my way to a promotion. At first, it felt like the gossip might never end, like it had latched onto my name like a shadow. But strangely, it began to quiet down. Fewer side glances in the hallway, fewer fake smiles. Maybe people got bored, or maybe they realized I wasn’t going to break.I followed Richard’s advice: act like the gossip never existed. Smile, work hard, show up stronger every day. It wasn’t always easy, but it worked. Most days.Mia and I hadn’t seen each other in a while either. Life got busy — her fashion career was booming and I was constantly caught between reports, team reviews, and high-profile audits. We kept in touch over the phone though, and I had cleared my weekend just to catch up with her. She was my safe space — one of the few people who knew me before all of this... before him.Today felt differ

  • Abandoned by my ex, I accept his boss proposal    The Mistake I Wish I Never Made

Chapter 66.Mark's PovIt was a deep torture for me, seeing Lily throughout the week at work. Every single day felt like dragging my soul through glass. I told myself I’d be fine — that it didn’t matter. I thought that as long as we weren’t in the same department, I could handle it. But I lied to myself. I grossly underestimated what it meant to watch the woman I once had — the woman I lost — living happily without me. It started small. A glance in the hallway. A brush past each other near the elevator. Then came the full-blown sightings — her laughter echoing through the cafeteria, her soft voice floating into conference rooms, her presence filling any space she walked into. Lily had always been beautiful, but now she was something else entirely. She glowed.I have tried countless times to get her back into my life but she was done. Done with me she would always say to me. And lately, she wasn’t alone.Richard was always nearby. His hand resting on the small of her back, the way he
