Chapter 2

Author: Forest Isle
"No. Bun needs you. There's no need to change our arrangements just because he's throwing a tantrum."

Bun jumped out of William's arms, sauntered past me, and settled at Seren's feet.

She bent down and gently stroked his head.

Three years ago, I saw an orange tabby that had been surrendered at a pet store.

I brought up the idea of adopting him with Seren three times, but she refused every time.

I thought that was a boundary she wouldn't compromise on.

Now, I realized that some boundaries only applied to certain people.

I took the necklace I bought her out of my pocket and set it on the island.

Today was our third anniversary.

I'd come early because I wanted to surprise her.

William glanced at the box and suddenly smiled. "That looks familiar. Don't you already have one, Seren?"

Seren opened the box and took a look.

"Yeah," she said. "You gave me something similar last month."

William looked at me apologetically.

"Oh, my bad. I thought she would've told you."

Seren closed the box and pushed it back to me.

"Just return it. There's no need to waste money."

I asked her, "Do you know what day it is today?"

She glanced at her watch.

"It's Thursday."

William's phone suddenly rang.

After taking the call, he looked troubled.

"The vet says Bun is due for his booster shot, but I have plans tonight."

Seren picked up her car keys.

"I'll go with you."

She was already at the front door before she finally turned to look at me.

"You should head home too. Next time, wait for me to confirm before coming over."

I didn't take the necklace box.

Instead, I asked, "Seren, am I really not allowed to come and go freely as your boyfriend?"

She was silent for two seconds.

"Don't test me."

The door closed in my face.

…

The next afternoon, Seren sent me a message.

"I admit my attitude last night was unpleasant, but you were also wrong to show up unannounced. Let's both reflect on ourselves and put this behind us."

I stared at the message for a long time before replying with a simple, "Okay."

She quickly sent me an address.

"The department is having dinner tonight. Haven't you always wanted to meet my coworkers? Be here at six."

For the past three years, she had never once brought me to a work gathering.

I thought our argument yesterday finally made her reconsider.

After work, I went home specifically to freshen up.

When I arrived at the restaurant, the private dining room was already full.

There was an empty seat beside Seren.

Just as I was about to walk over, William came in carrying a cake. He chuckled, "Sorry I'm late! It took longer than expected to get Bun's medication sorted out."

Someone immediately called out to him.

"The husband is here! We saved your seat."

William gave an embarrassed laugh. "Don't say that. Mr. Leed is right here."

The room fell silent for a moment.

A dozen pairs of eyes turned toward me.

Seren didn't bother to explain anything and simply pulled out the chair beside her for William.

"Sit," she said.

I stood beside the table, staring at the seat that I assumed had been saved for me.

One of her colleagues hurriedly tried to smooth things over.

"Sit here, Mr. Leed. You can get to know Mr. Quill too. Ms. Grant mentioned that our companies are working together."

I sat at the foot of the table.

So, Seren didn't invite me to acknowledge our relationship.

She invited me because our companies were jointly bidding on a project, and she wanted me to meet the lawyer handling the contract review.

Once dinner officially began, the conversation naturally revolved around the project.

Seren kept her head down as she ate, occasionally turning to respond to something William said.

Almost none of the food in front of me was safe to eat.

Most of the dishes contained traces of nuts, which I was deathly allergic to.

William had chosen the restaurant.

During my first year with Seren, I ended up in the hospital after accidentally eating some peanut butter.

Seren had stayed by my side until dawn and even saved my allergens on her phone.

I thought she'd at least remember something like that.

Instead, she merely glanced up at me.

"Why aren't you eating?"

Seren held out an old hard drive."It has every design draft you sent me three years ago, along with our chat history. I didn't delete any of it.""There's already enough evidence.""That's not what it's for."She paused."You used to send me so many things every day."The flowers blooming downstairs, a terrible cake you had, a cat you spotted on the street. Back then, I thought they were all meaningless and wouldn't reply for hours."It's only after you stopped sending me things that I realized just how quiet a day could be."I didn't respond. She laughed self-deprecatingly."I moved out of that apartment.""What about Bun?""I gave him to a family who genuinely loves cats. I also got rid of everything William left behind. I replaced the fingerprint lock and put the apartment up for sale.""Seren, you don't owe me an explanation.""I know."She slipped the hard drive back into her pocket, her voice growing softer."I just wanted to talk to you a little longer."Someon

Later, the client reached out to me, asking my team to take over the project and complete it independently.Seren was also present on the day the contract was signed. She was no longer the project lead. She was only attending as a representative of the former business partner.Halfway through the signing, the client stepped out to take a phone call. That left Seren and me alone in the conference room. She slid a document toward me."These are all the communication records between the event's investors and Grant Group from back then.""Eva already has them.""This copy includes my written testimony."I flipped to the last page.In it, Seren admitted that the company instructed her to approach me, the complainant, and that she used our personal relationship to persuade me to drop my case.If this testimony was submitted, she wouldn't just face disciplinary action from the company. She would also lose the credibility she'd earned with the industry association."Why are you giv

Five days after the old case was reopened, William reached out to me.He asked to meet downstairs at the hospital."Charles, are you determined to destroy my life?"He pulled off his mask, his eyes terribly red."The organizers suspended my professional certification, and the company put me on leave. Seren also got reprimanded by the board for withdrawing from the project on your behalf.I swirled the coffee in my cup."So?""I didn't steal your design three years ago. An intern sent it to me. I didn't know someone else had already entered it in the competition.""Then why did you keep using it after you found out it was mine?""The competition started the next day. I had no way out."His voice trembled."That was my first opportunity in this industry. If I admitted to plagiarism, my life would've been ruined.""So you decided to ruin mine instead.""But you managed to stand back up, didn't you?"It was only after he spoke that he realized how bad his words sounded.Afte

Seren's gaze passed over Eva and landed on me."You brought an outsider into our business?"Eva pushed up her glasses."Ms. Grant, Mr. Leed hired me to handle the copyright issues, termination of the project partnership, and reopening the case. I'm not here to mediate relationship disputes.""I'm talking to him. You don't get to answer for him."Seren reached out to grab me, but I stepped away. Her hand froze in midair, her fingers slowly curling into a fist."Charles, let's talk in private.""There's nothing to talk about.""Your mother just finished surgery. Are you sure you want to make a scene here?"I looked at her."You're the only one making a scene here."Seren's jaw tightened, but she eventually lowered her voice."I admit I had a hidden agenda when I first approached you, but over the past three years, I've been there when you were sick, helped you deal with problems at work, and even met your family. Do you think all of that was an act?""Whether it was an act

The next morning at nine, the joint project was suspended from the bid.William's eligibility to serve as the lead presenter was frozen as well. When the news reached the hospital, I was pouring Mom a glass of water.Seren called. "You revoked the authorization?""Yes.""Reinstate it now."Her voice was still composed, but she was speaking faster than usual."There are only two days left until the final review. Do you have any idea how much the company will lose if you pull out at this stage?"I gripped the thermal flask tightly."Didn't you say that we don't need to distinguish whose work the joint project was? Since William is the lead designer, just tell him to create a new proposal.""Charles Leed, I don't have time to deal with your tantrum right now.""I'm not throwing a tantrum.""Then what was that complaint email supposed to be?"It seemed the association had contacted her.I walked to the end of the hallway."It's exactly what it looks like. The final message was sent the day after Seren and I became a couple.William asked her, "Has he withdrawn the complaint yet?"Seren replied, "Almost. He's easy to handle."The pages rustled softly in my hand.Just then, my phone lit up.It was my mother calling. She was scheduled for surgery to remove a tumor today.Seren promised that she'd be there.By the time I arrived at the hospital, the nurse had already reminded us twice that it was time.Mom lay in the hospital bed, her face pale."Is Seren stuck in traffic?""Yeah," I lied. "She'll be here soon."I walked to the stairwell and called Seren. The first time, no one answered. The second call was declined, and on the third attempt, William picked up."Charles, Seren isn't available right now.""Put her on the phone.""Bun ran away. We're looking for him now. He's timid, and it's raining outside. He could be in real danger."I gripped my phone."My mom has surgery in half an hour. She promised she'd come."Willi
