Chapter 1 What Did You See?

last update Last Updated: 2026-01-17 20:39:48

Ilaria's POV

The slap landed before I even knew she was there.

My head snapped sideways, a sharp burn spreading across my cheek. My ears rang.

Calista stood in front of me, lips curling. “What did you see?”

“I… was cleaning.”

Her eyes narrowed. “And?”

“Nothing.”

I saw her pour something into a cup. That wasn't what she wanted to drink.

She was clearly planning something.

But I didn’t dare speak up about what I’d just seen—afraid it would bring a brutal beating.

She stepped closer, her breath brushing my face. “That’s all?”

“Yes.”

Her smile was venom. She pulled a torn sleeve from her pocket, its edges crumpled and stained, the label half-scratched away. Whatever it once held, didn't look innocent. She dangled it between two fingers.

“You know what this is,” she said, her voice low and cutting. “Your Omega mother used this drug to my Alpha father, and you little bi*tch, were born!”

Calista and I were half-sisters. But she never saw it that way, her mother was the noble Luna and mine was just an Omega.

Calista has always taken pleasure in abusing me.

I've tried to resist, but because I don't have a wolf.

Resistance tended to harder abuse.

“No wolf. No power. No voice,” she said, looking down at me like filth.

I'm used to being abused, but I can't stand that Calista is insulting my mother!

"At least don't say that about my mother..." I whispered.

“Why not?” Her voice sharpened. “Your mother was nothing. An Omega who spread her legs for the wrong man.”

My fists clenched. “You know that's not true.”

My mom didn't seduce Alpha. It was Alpha who forced her.

Her eyes gleamed. “I’ll talk about her however I want.” She grabbed my wrist and twisted until I gasped. “You don’t tell me what to do.”

I tried to pull free. She shoved me back, the counter edge digging into my spine.

She shoved me to my knees. My skirt soaked up water from the tipped bucket.

I pushed myself up, but she slammed me into the fridge. My vision flashed white.

Her knee caught my thigh. I stumbled. Another slap.

Without time to plead, her hand shoved my head down into the sink.

Cold water flooded my nose and mouth. I thrashed, coughing, until she yanked me up again. Air tore into my lungs, my lip split and bleeding.

“No one will help you,” she sneered, fingers digging into my neck before shoving me back against the counter. “You’re nothing but a stain in this house.”

Calista was right.

She had the freedom, the praise, the father’s love I’d never known. Bill Wynn’s precious daughter.

I was the mistake, born from the woman he had kidnapped and broken. My mother, once an Omega with a kind smile, was dragged into this pack and forced to carry me, then left behind when he decided she wasn’t worth keeping.

Calista’s mother hated her for it. Hated us both. She’d fed that hate to her daughter like a poison until it filled her bones. Now, all grown and cruel, Calista held my past over my head.

She let go, and I collapsed onto the floor, choking for breath. Straightening her blouse, she lifted the cup from the counter like it was precious.

“Take this outside,” she ordered. “Alpha Reed will be here any minute. Serve it to him the moment he sits down. Make sure he drinks it.”

“I won’t be part of this,” I protested softly.

“If you mess this up, I’ll release that little video. Remember?” Her voice dropped to a whisper that chilled me more than her blows. “The night you were stripped by those men. Crying. Screaming. And no one came.”

My blood turned to ice.

She wasn’t lying. She never had to. For as long as I could remember, she’d had my life in her hands. Squeezing when she was bored, twisting when she wanted to see me break.

I stared at the cup. My hands itched to smash it against the wall, but fear was a heavy chain.

“You’ll do it,” she said. It wasn’t a request.

My silence was answer enough.

She set the cup on the counter and smoothed her hair in the microwave’s reflection. “Good girl. Don’t spill it. And remember, smile for the Alpha.”

Then she left, her heels clicking down the hall.

I stood in the quiet kitchen, staring at the steam curling from the drink. The ceramic was warm in my grip, my pulse loud in my ears. I didn’t know what she’d put in it. But I had no choice. The memory of her threat clung to me like smoke.

Each step toward the front room made the cup feel heavier, as if it knew what it carried. My fingers tightened around the handle until they ached. I hated myself for holding it, and for not letting it fall.

As if things couldn't get any worse. From the front hall came the murmur of voices and the shuffle of hurried footsteps. The atmosphere in the Pack house shifted. Servants straightening their clothes and standing a little taller.

Then the maid appeared in the doorway, her eyes bright with excitement. “Alpha Reed has arrived.”

My stomach sank.

I’d heard of him all my life, owner of the largest Pack in North America, the most promising Alpha candidate in the election. People whispered about his family’s cruelty, their ruthless power, their dealings with dark witches. But wealth like his made people forget anything ugly. Some even called him a prize.

And now Calista wanted me to hand him a tainted drink.

I stared at the cup in my hand, my pulse hammering.

From the doorway, I saw him, tall, broad-shouldered, the black of his suit sharp against his frame. His face was striking, handsome in a way that unsettled me because it didn’t match the rumors. His eyes were sharp, captivating, but not cold.

The maid nudged me forward. “Take the coffee in.”

I steadied my grip on the tray and stepped into the room.

My Alpha Father Bill and Calista are already in the reception area with Reid.

Calista looked at me warningly.

I stared at the cup in my hand, my pulse hammering. I didn’t understand why she needed this, why she would risk something so dangerous. But if I refused, she would make sure whatever little peace I had left was gone.

Fear curled low in my stomach. I didn’t want to do this but I had no choice.

Ilaria’s povLuna's first birthday party was everything I'd hoped it would be.The pack house's main hall was decorated with soft pinks and golds, balloons clustered in corners, a small cake shaped like a crescent moon sitting on the center table. Nothing too extravagant, Reed and I had agreed we wanted this to be warm and intimate, not a political statement. But it was still beautiful.Luna wore a tiny dress my mother had made, white with golden embroidery. She was walking now, wobbly, uncertain steps that made everyone coo with delight. Reed followed her everywhere, ready to catch her when she stumbled, his expression so full of love it made my chest ache.I wore a deep blue gown that Reed had picked out, something elegant but comfortable. After a year of motherhood, of sleepless nights and constant worry, it felt good to dress up, to feel beautiful again. The guests were a mix of pack members, allied leaders, and dignitaries from across the territory. My mother, beaming as she watc

  • Accidental: Alpha's Surrogate Bride    Chapter 99 - The Frame

George’s povGeorge sat in his hotel room in Cabo San Lucas, laptop open, watching his team work through encrypted video calls."The phone footage is ready," Viktor reported, his face pixelated for security. "We removed all frames showing the note on the screen. Now it just looks like she picked up an expensive phone and walked away with it.""Show me."Kozlov shared his screen. The edited footage played, Ilaria walking through the park, noticing the phone on the bench, picking it up, checking it briefly, then slipping it into her bag and leaving. Without the context of the note, without the screen visible, it looked exactly like theft."The café footage?""Edited to show her attempting to sell the phone. We hired an actor to play a buyer. Looks like a standard black market transaction."George smiled. "Financial records?""Created and backdated. Shows a cash deposit to an account we've linked to her through shell companies. Five hundred dollars—reasonable for a stolen high-end phone.

Ilaria’s povThree days after returning the phone, I was at the train station picking up a package Reed had ordered for Luna, some fancy imported baby clothes his mother insisted we needed. The station was busy, people rushing in every direction, the metallic voice over the intercom announcing arrivals and departures. I'd just collected the package from the shipping office when I saw an elderly woman, maybe seventy, struggling with a massive suitcase near the taxi stand. She'd get it a few feet, stop to catch her breath, then try again. No one was helping her, everyone too absorbed in their own travels to notice.I hesitated. Luna was with my mother, and I had time before I needed to be home. And the woman looked genuinely distressed, her face flushed with effort.I approached her, adjusting Reed's package under my arm. "Excuse me, do you need help?"She looked up, relief flooding her weathered features. "Oh, bless you, dear. Yes, I—I'm visiting my daughter, but this suitcase is so h

  • Accidental: Alpha's Surrogate Bride    Chapter 97 - The Setup

Ilaria’s povTwo weeks after Luna's celebration, I finally felt like I had a routine.Mornings were for Luna, feeding, changing, those precious hours when she was most alert and I could watch her discover the world. Afternoons, my mother would come over to watch her while I spent a few hours at the pack house helping them manage administrative work. It wasn't glamorous, but I liked feeling useful, liked being part of the pack's daily operations instead of just Reed's mate.Evenings were for our small family. Reed would come home, take Luna so I could have a break, and we'd have dinner together like normal people instead of an Alpha and Luna constantly under scrutiny. It felt good. Maybe that's why I didn't see it coming. It was Thursday evening, and I'd stayed a bit late at the pack house finishing up some filing. Reed was in meetings all afternoon, and my mother had texted that Luna was fed and happy, so I'd decided to walk home through the small park that bordered our residential a

George stared at the bottom of his empty glass, the amber residue catching the dim light of his home office. Three in the morning, and he was still awake, still drinking, still trying to silence the voice in his head that kept screaming the same truth over and over:He'd lost. The bottle of scotch sat within reach, his third tonight, or was it his fourth? He'd stopped counting days ago. Reed was still the Alpha. Stronger than before, if the intelligence reports were accurate. The pack had rallied around him after the assassination attempts, seeing him as a leader who'd survived multiple threats and emerged unshaken. And Ilaria, that wolfless Omega who should have been easy to eliminate. She'd not only survived but thrived. Given birth to Reed's heir and had been accepted by the pack despite her status, despite everything George had done to expose her.The medical documentation he'd paid so much for? Worthless. Dr. Thornton had been exposed as corrupt, her testimony inadmissible. The

Ilaria’s povOne month laterI experienced another type of pain, way worse than anything I'd imagined. But when the midwife placed my daughter in my arms with tiny, perfect, screaming with healthy lungs, none of it mattered anymore."She's beautiful," Reed breathed beside me, his finger gently stroking our daughter's cheek. His eyes were wet, which was something I'd never seen before. She was beautiful, had hair like mine, plastered to her small head. And when she finally opened her eyes to look at us, they were golden just like her father's."Hello, little one," I whispered, exhausted and overwhelmed and more in love than I'd known was possible. "We've been waiting for you."Reed leaned down, pressing his lips to my forehead. "You did so well. She's perfect. You're both perfect."My mother stood in the corner of the room, tears streaming down her face. "What should we name her?" Reed asked softly. We'd been debating names for weeks, unable to agree. But looking at her now, at those
