ELOISE.

My feet carried me up the grand staircase, each step a small, trembling victory. The adrenaline from my confrontation with Isabella was a fire in my veins, burning away the last traces of the timid woman I used to be. My heart was a frantic drum against my ribs, and my hands shook, but I kept my back straight. I didn't run, I walked. I reached the safe space of our bedroom and closed the door softly behind me, the click of the latch sounding like a final, definitive statement.

I leaned against the cool wood, my breath coming in gasps. My gaze fell on my reflection in the full-length mirror. The woman staring back at me was exhausted, she had tired eyes, but the flicker of hope I'd seen this morning had been joined by a fierce, protective glint.

I had stood up to someone that reminded me of Damian's mother so much, a woman who saw me as nothing but a womb to hire, an inconvenience to be paid off and discarded, and I had said no, and that to me was a victory in more ways than

ELOISE. The ride back to the mansion was a silent, vibrating blue. I stared out the window, but I didn't see the manicured lawns or the sprawling houses we passed. All I saw was Damian's annoying face, the desperate twist of his mouth, the unfamiliar panic in his eyes. My arm, where he'd grabbed me, tingled with an ache, I rubbed the skin, trying to erase the feel of his touch. It felt disgusting, the touch that used to be so comforting to me now felt so foreign. The memory of his desperation, he was a stranger to me now. A man I no longer recognise, and yet his poison still tried to find it's way into my veins. Marcus drove with a quiet, efficient focus, his eyes occasionally flicking to me in the rearview mirror, he didn't speak, and I was grateful for the silence, it gave me time to let the tremors subside. To sort through the tangles of emotions. Fear, yes, but beneath it was a cold, hard anger, Damian hadn't been trying to help me, he was drowning and the idiot was trying to p

ELOISE. The next few days were filled with tension, even though Dante tried as much as possible to make sure we didn't go downstairs or meet with his mother or Valentina, it didn't reduce the tension. The house felt like a pressure cooker, the lid rattling with unspoken hostility. Anytime I came in contact with Valentina, she always played the part of the gracious, long-suffering victim, and I wondered who she was putting on an act for, because I'm sure Isabella wouldn't mind her being a bitch to me, since she was a bitch herself. No offense to Dante. Isabella was a silent, icy presence, her glare following me from room to room. Yesterday, Isabella came up here and begged Dante to come down for dinner, and he had refused blatantly and shut the door in her face. Not wanting to be a bad person, I coerced him to go downstairs and he told me he would go only if I came with him. And I did. The breakfast was a silent war fought with the clinking of silverware, anytime I entered a room w

ELOISE. I woke up slow, like surfacing from a deep, warm Ocean. For the first time in a long time, the morning didn't greet me with an anxious feeling, though I was a bit anxious from the previous night, but I tried as much as possible to think positive things. The space beside me was warm, an arm slung protectively over my waist, pulling me into a solid chest. Dante. His breathing was a steady, even rhythm against my back, a quiet promise in the early light filtering through the blinds. A small, fragile smile touched my lips. Maybe….maybe this could work, maybe this wasn't just a contract. The way he smelled, he smelled so good. Something clean and masculine like sandalwood and night air, which felt very comforting. I let myself sink into it, just for a moment, memorising the feeling of safety and comfort. The last thing I remembered before going to sleep was Dante holding my hand and putting me to sleep, which felt extra nice. That's probably the reason I woke up feeling good. L

ELOISE. It started with a knock. Not loud. Not frantic. Just a firm, sharp rap against the front door. Like someone who knew exactly what they were doing. Dante had been in the kitchen, slicing apples with that same quiet precision he applied to everything lately. I sat on the couch, one hand on the curve of my belly, the other flipping a magazine I wasn't reading. We both heard it. His eyes flicked toward the door, then back to the knife in his hand. “Don't move,” he said gently, like always. “I'll get it.”But I was already on edge. I didn't know why. I felt weird like the day I got poisoned, the way I felt that day was what I was feeling now and it made me uncomfortable. The silence after the knock stretched too long. Long enough that I pushed the magazine off my lap and stood, ignoring the low thrum of warning in my chest. I padded toward the hallway barefoot, peeking just in time to see Dante pull the heavy oak door open. Then I saw her. Tall. Thin. Radiant in that cold,
