The Morning-After Media Meltdown

I didn't sleep. Not for a single second.

By 4:00 AM, my tiny studio apartment felt less like a home and more like a high-voltage interrogation room. I spent hours pacing back and forth across the creaking linoleum floor, my bare feet freezing, staring at my phone as if it were a live grenade.

It was.

At exactly 6:15 AM, the internet officially exploded. My screen lit up so violently it practically burned my eyes. It wasn't just a notification; it was an avalanche.

“Oh, no. Please, no,” I muttered, my voice cracking in the quiet room. My chest felt tight, that heavy, suffocating pressure you get when you realize you didn’t just make a fool of yourself—you accidentally derailed your entire life.

I tapped on the first link. It was a major high-society tabloid page, and right there, pinned to the top, was a crystal-clear photograph from last night. The lighting from the Grand Hyatt’s chandeliers caught the emerald green of my dress perfectly. But the focus wasn't on the dress. It was on the massive, broad-shadowed man whose hand was wrapped possessively around my waist, pulling me so close there wasn't an inch of daylight between us. My face was turned upward, eyes wide with a mixture of terror and breathless panic that the camera had somehow captured as 'star-struck adoration.'

The headline above it practically screamed in bold letters:

RECLUSIVE TECH TITAN ALEXANDER STERLING SPOTTED WITH SECRET FIANCÉE AT BLANCHARD GALA!

I dropped the phone onto my tangled bedsheets as if it had bitten me. My heart hammered against my ribs, a loud, frantic thumping that echoed in my ears. Alexander Sterling.

He wasn't an escort named Liam. He wasn't a premium companion who charged three hundred dollars an hour to smile at toxic exes. He was the multi-billionaire CEO of Sterling Industries, the literal god of the domestic tech sector, and a man so notoriously protective of his privacy that the media hadn't managed to get a verified photo of his face in over three years.

Until last night. Until I grabbed his hand and dumped a bucket of unfiltered word vomit all over him.

"I called him a sketchy app escort," I whispered into my hands, pressing my palms against my burning cheeks. "I offered to leave him a five-star review."

A sudden, sharp knock at my door made me jump a foot into the air.

Knock. Knock. Knock.

It wasn't a normal knock. It was heavy, rhythmic, and carried the unmistakable weight of people who wore earpieces and expensive suits for a living.

My breath caught in my throat. I crept toward the door, my knees trembling so badly I could barely keep my balance. Looking through the tiny, scratched peephole, my stomach completely dropped. The narrow hallway of my run-down apartment building was entirely blocked by three massive men in dark suits. Parked visibly outside my window down on the street, the deep rumble of idling engines from a fleet of black luxury SUVs vibrated right through the floorboards.

Before I could even think about hiding under my bed, the door handle turned from the outside with a sharp, mechanical click.

The door swung open, and the world seemed to slow down.

Alexander Sterling stepped through the small frame, instantly making my apartment look like a dollhouse. He was dressed in a crisp, charcoal-gray tailored suit today, a stark contrast to the tux from the night before, but his aura was exactly the same—cold, calculating, and terrifyingly respectable. Those piercing gray eyes swept across my messy room, taking in the sink full of coffee mugs and the pile of laundry in the corner, before locking directly onto me.

"You don't answer your phone, Seraphina," he said. His deep baritone voice filled the space, calm and entirely unbothered by the chaos he was causing.

"You... you broke into my apartment!" I gasped, backing up until my spine hit the edge of my kitchen counter. My hands gripped the laminate behind me so hard my knuckles turned white.

"I turned the handle. You left it unlocked," Alexander replied smoothly, closing the door behind him with a soft, definitive thud. He stepped closer, the faint scent of sandalwood and winter rain instantly overriding the smell of my cheap morning coffee. "A dangerous habit for someone who is currently the most searched name on the internet."

"Look, Mr. Sterling," I started, my voice pitching higher as the panic threatened to swallow me whole. My mind was racing, trying to find a joke, a quip, anything to shield myself from the sheer intensity of his gaze. "I am so, so sorry. I thought you were Liam. Liam is a 6'2" escort who was supposed to be wearing charcoal. You were near the curtains! It was a logistical mix-up. I'll issue a public statement. I'll tell the media I'm a delusional fan who jumped you. I'll take the blame—"

"Quiet," he commanded softly.

I clamped my mouth shut, my throat tight, my heart thumping against my ribs like a trapped bird.

Alexander pulled a sleek tablet from his jacket pocket and laid it flat on my kitchen counter, right next to a half-eaten piece of toast. He tapped the screen, displaying a live chart of Sterling Industries' stock market performance.

"Because of last night's leak, my company's stock value just rose by four percent in early trading," Alexander explained, his gray eyes fixing on me with an intelligent, calculating sharpness. "The board has been pressuring me to humanize my image before our upcoming global merger. They think a fiancée makes me look stable, respectable, and settled."

I blinked, my brain struggling to process the numbers. "So... you're not going to sue me or throw me in a corporate dungeon?"

"No," Alexander said, a tiny, almost invisible trace of amusement tugging at the corner of his lips. "I'm going to offer you a job. Six months, Seraphina. We maintain the lie. You play the role of my fiancée in public, attend three high-profile events by my side, and settle my board of directors."

"And what do I get out of this?" I asked, my inner survival instinct suddenly flaring up through the fear. I was broke, homeless adjacent, and my life's work had been stolen. If I was going to sell my soul to a tech god, I wasn't doing it for free. "I don't need charity, Mr. Sterling."

Alexander leaned in, pinning me against the counter, his shadow completely enveloping me. The sheer physical proximity made my breath hitch, a sudden, heavy warmth blossoming deep in my chest.

"You get your revenge," Alexander whispered, his eyes dark and intensely serious. "I know Julian Croft stole your proprietary source code for Nexus Tech. I also know he is trying to sell a modified version of it to one of my subsidiaries. Sign the contract with me, and my legal team will freeze his assets by the end of the week. I will personally fund your own independent laboratory. You will build your empire, and together, we will completely destroy him."

My jaw dropped. The sheer gravity of his offer hung in the air between us, thick and intoxicating. It was everything I had been praying for, handed to me on a silver platter by a man I had known for less than twelve hours.

"Six months?" I whispered, my voice barely audible over the sound of the blood rushing in my ears.

"Six months," Alexander confirmed, reaching into his pocket and pulling out a sleek, heavy fountain pen, placing it gently on top of the tablet. "Do we have a deal, partner?"

The Masterclass in Public HumiliationThe air inside the main exhibition hall of the Metropolitan Tech Convention Center was thick with the scent of ozone, expensive cologne, and corporate desperation. Massive digital displays flickered on every wall, throwing cold, blue light across the faces of hundreds of high-profile investors and tech moguls. My arm was still locked firmly with Alexander Sterling’s as we glided through the crowd. The sheer velocity of the gossip trailing behind us was almost loud enough to drown out the ambient techno music playing from the speakers. Every head turned. Every phone was raised. But Alexander walked with the steady, unbothered grace of a king inspecting his courtyard, his large hand occasionally reaching over to pat mine where it rested on his forearm."Breathe, Seraphina," he murmured, his deep baritone completely steady as we neared the center of the exhibition floor. "You’re gripping my sleeve tightly enough to stop my circulation.""I am breathi

The crisp morning air bit at my face, but the three massive men in black suits quickly shielded me, guiding me into the back of a sprawling, midnight-black SUV. The memory hit me with the force of a physical blow, making my cheeks burn all over again. After Alexander had so elegantly reduced Julian to a sweating, stuttering mess in the middle of the Hyatt ballroom, he had turned his full, undivided attention to me. My fingers trembled as I smoothed down the emerald-green silk dress I had scraped my last savings to buy. I had even forgotten to cut the price tag off the inside seam, praying I could return it tomorrow without anyone noticing the sweat stains from my current panic attack."You can do this, Sera," I whispered to myself, though my voice sounded dangerously hollow.
