Olivia leaned against the bus shelter and shrugged, even though Mia couldn't see her.

"I honestly don't know."

"What do you mean you don't know?"

"I answered every question they asked."

"And?"

"They kept exchanging looks with each other. I couldn't tell if that was a good thing or a bad thing."

For a moment, there was silence.

Then Mia laughed.

"You overthink everything."

"I do not."

"Oh, you absolutely do."

Olivia couldn't help laughing.

"I've missed hearing you laugh," Mia said warmly. "Now stop worrying."

"I wish it were that easy."

"It is."

"No... it isn't."

"It will be."

Olivia frowned.

"What do you mean?"

"After tonight."

"Tonight?"

"The charity gala."

Olivia groaned.

"Mia..."

"No excuses this time."

"I don't belong at events like that."

"You belong wherever you choose to be."

"I don't even own a decent dress."

"I've already taken care of that."

Olivia's eyes widened.

"What did you do?"

"I bought you one."

"Mia!"

"What?" Mia laughed. "Don't yell at me."

"I can't accept something so expensive."

"You can."

"No, I can't."

"It's a gift."

"I'll pay you back."

"No, you won't."

"Mia..."

"I said no."

Olivia shook her head, smiling despite herself.

Sometimes she wondered how she had been lucky enough to have a friend like Mia Brooks.

"Meet me at my apartment by six," Mia continued.

"And if I don't?"

"I'll come over and drag you there myself."

Before Olivia could protest, the call ended.

She looked at her phone and laughed softly.

"She's impossible."

Yet deep down...

She knew Mia would do exactly what she had threatened.

Across the city...

The top floor of Kingsley Group was as quiet as ever.

Behind the floor-to-ceiling windows of his office, Ethan Kingsley stood with his hands in his pockets, watching the busy streets of Westbridge below.

Thousands of people moved through the city.

Each carrying dreams...

Worries...

And responsibilities.

A knock on the door interrupted his thoughts.

"Come in."

Daniel entered carrying several neatly organized files.

"Sir, these require your signature."

Without a word, Ethan sat down and signed each document with practiced precision.

"Anything else?"

Daniel hesitated.

"Your grandfather called."

Ethan didn't even look up.

"I assumed he would."

"He asked me to remind you that tonight's charity gala isn't optional."

A faint sigh escaped Ethan's lips.

"When has anything involving my grandfather ever been optional?"

Daniel smiled politely.

"I'll have the car ready at seven."

After Daniel left, silence returned to the office.

Ethan leaned back in his chair and rubbed his temples.

He disliked social gatherings.

Most people attended them for money, influence, or business opportunities.

Very few were genuine.

His eyes drifted toward a framed photograph resting on the bookshelf.

A much younger Ethan stood between his parents, all three smiling brightly.

He picked up the frame carefully.

His expression softened.

"Some things should have stayed the way they were," he murmured.

His phone vibrated again.

Grandfather: Don't be late. We have an important announcement.

Ethan frowned.

"What are you planning this time, Grandfather?"

Back at the Carter apartment...

The familiar scent of home greeted Olivia as she stepped inside.

Before she could close the door, Emma rushed toward her with a bright smile.

"You're back!"

Olivia laughed.

"Looks like someone missed me."

"Maybe a little."

"How was school?"

Emma dramatically rolled her eyes.

"Boring."

Sarah chuckled from the sofa.

"She says that every single day."

"Because it's true."

The three of them laughed together.

Olivia walked over and sat beside her mother.

"Did you take your medicine?"

Sarah nodded.

"I did."

As Olivia reached for the bottle, her smile faded ever so slightly.

Only two tablets remained.

She quietly placed it back on the table before her mother noticed the concern in her eyes.

We'll need another prescription soon.

She silently pushed the thought aside.

Not today.

Today wasn't over yet.

Perhaps the interview had gone better than she believed.

Perhaps this was finally the beginning of a new chapter in their lives.

She had no idea...

That by accepting Mia's invitation to the charity gala...

She was about to step into the moment that would change her life forever.
