Skye

I don’t remember how I make it back to my dorm. One minute I’m standing in the middle of the football stadium.

The next, I’m climbing the stairs to the third floor with legs that don’t feel like mine.

The hallway is unusually quiet. Most students are still outside enjoying the cool evening air.

I should probably be relieved. I don’t think I can survive another whisper today.

My key trembles slightly as I unlock the door. The moment it clicks open, I step inside and quietly shut the world out.

Silence. Real silence. For the first time all day. I drop my backpack onto the floor without caring where it lands.

My phone vibrates immediately. Then again. And again. I don’t need to look. I already know. The post. The comments. The messages. The rumors. They’re multiplying by the second.

I walk over to my bed and collapse face-first into the mattress. The soft pillow muffles the shaky breath that escapes me.

“What have I done?”

Nobody answers. Of course nobody does. Because somehow, I chose this. Not because I wanted to. Because every other choice seemed worse.

I roll onto my back and stare blankly at the ceiling. This morning, I was just another freshman with an embarrassing crush.

Now, The entire university believes I’m dating Jace Knight. The same Jace Knight who’s spent years making my life difficult.

The same Jace Knight every girl on campus wants. The same Jace Knight I promised myself I’d stay away from.

A laugh slips out. It’s so weak it almost sounds like crying.

“I’m an idiot.”

A knock interrupts my thoughts. Before I can answer, the door swings open. Kimberly storms in first. Chloe follows quietly behind her.

The second Kimberly sees my face, her own expression softens. “You look horrible.”

“Thanks.”

“I meant emotionally.”

“I know.”

She walks over and throws herself onto my bed beside me. “So?”

I already know what she’s asking.

I sigh. “I said yes.”

Neither of them speaks. For once, Kimberly has no joke. No sarcastic comment. Nothing.

Chloe quietly sits on the chair beside my desk. “Are you okay?”

“No.” The answer comes so quickly it surprises even me. “I don’t know what I’m feeling. I feel relieved. I feel scared. I feel guilty. And…” I stop.

Because I can’t explain the last feeling. The strange heaviness sitting inside my chest.

Kimberly reaches over and gently squeezes my hand. “You’re doing what you need to survive.”

“I know. But it doesn’t feel that way. It feels like…I’m giving away part of my life.”

Nobody tells me I’m wrong. Because maybe I’m not. My phone suddenly begins ringing.

Mom. The word flashes across my screen.

For a second, I almost decline it. If I hear her voice, I’m going to cry.

Chloe notices the screen. “You should answer.”

I swallow hard before pressing accept. “Hi, Mom.”

“My baby!” Her cheerful voice instantly fills the room. “How’s my favorite university student?”

I force a smile she can’t even see. “I’m okay.”

“Liar.”

I freeze. “What?”

“I know your voice.” She laughs softly. “You’ve had that exact voice since you were seven years old and your goldfish died.”

Despite myself, A tiny smile appears. “I wasn’t that dramatic.”

“You cried for three days.”

“I was eight.”

“You insisted we give the fish a funeral.”

Kimberly snorts beside me. I glare at her.

Mom continues talking. “Is university too stressful?”

“A little.”

“Are people treating you well? What about Ethan and Jace? Are they making you feel at home?”

The question catches me completely off guard. My throat closes. For one terrifying second, I almost tell her everything. About Tiffany. About the videos. About Jace.

About pretending to be someone I’m not. Instead…

“I’m fine….. They are treating me good.”

A long silence follows.

Then Mom sighs softly. “You know your father and I are always one phone call away. You can always bring them home during the holiday, I will prepare a nice meal for you guys.”

“Alright mom.”

“We miss you.”

“I miss you too.”

“And sweetheart…” Her voice grows gentler. “Whatever happens over there, don’t carry it alone.”

My vision blurs. I bite the inside of my cheek so hard it hurts. “I won’t.”

“I love you.”

“I love you too.”

The call ends. The room falls silent again. I stare at the dark screen until a single tear lands on it. Then another.

Kimberly doesn’t tease me. Chloe doesn’t tell me to stop crying.

Instead, One sits beside me. The other wraps her arms around my shoulders. Neither of them says a word. Somehow, That makes me cry even harder.

On the bed, another notification echoes through the room. Then another. Then another.

I don’t even have to unlock my phone. I already know. Royal Haven hasn’t finished talking about me yet.

Skye By the time Chloe, Kimberly, and I reach the academic building the next morning, my stomach is already in knots. Every step down the hallway feels heavier than the last. People stop talking when they see me. Then they start whispering again the second I walk past. “That’s her.” “Jace Knight’s girlfriend.” “I thought he was dating Tiffany.” “No, Tiffany got dumped.” “I heard Skye stole him.” “I heard they slept together.” Heat creeps up my neck. I keep my head down and pretend I can’t hear any of it. Kimberly immediately hooks her arm through mine. “Eyes forward,” she mutters. “Don’t give them the satisfaction.” I nod, even though my chest already hurts. The moment we enter the lecture hall, conversations stop. Not one. Not two. The entire room. Dozens of eyes turn toward me. Some curious. Some amused. Some openly judgmental. I suddenly regret coming. “There she is.” Someone whistles. Another student claps dramatically. “Oh look, the queen arrived.” A few people lau

Skye Jace is not wearing the football jersey anymore. Instead, he has on a plain black T-shirt that clings to his broad shoulders, his damp hair pushed back as though he’d just showered. The setting sun cast long shadows across the empty stadium, making his gray eyes look almost silver. These things never affected me before. I've known Jace since forever and I never noticed how breathtaking he is. What the hell is wrong with me? I shake my head, refusing to succumb to this stupidity. Jace looks at me without surprise. “I knew you would come.” The confidence in his voice immediately irritates me. “You are so full of yourself.” The corner of his mouth twitches, “Thanks for the compliment.” I fold my arms, “I haven't even agreed.” “No? Then why are you here? Miss me?” My nose wrinkles in disgust, I would rather jump off the bridge. I open my mouth to say something. Nothing comes out. Yet his question hangs in the air. Why am I here? After several awkward seco

Skye “I won't do it.” The words leave my mouth before I can second-guess them. Jace doesn't react. He watches me with those unreadable gray eyes, as if he’d expected that answer all along. “I’m not going to pretend to be your girlfriend Jace,” I say, making sure he heard me quite well. Silence falls. The breeze sweeps across the football field, lifting loose strands of my hair into my face. Around us, the last two players are leaving practice, throwing curious glances our way before disappearing into locker rooms. Jace finally slips his phone back into his pockets “Fine.” I blink, “Fine?” “You made your choice.” his voice is calm. Too calm. He brushes past me without another word. For a second, I simply stand there, staring after him. That’s it? No sarcastic remark. No argument. No trying to convince me. He just…. Walks away. Something about it unsettles me far more than if he’d kept fighting. My eyes follow his retreating figure until he disappears bene

Jace The first thing Mason does is punch me in the shoulder. Hard. “What the hell was that for?” I shove him away. He grins, “For making the greatest announcement in Royal Haven history.” The rest of them burst into laughter. We had barely finished football practice when every single phone on the field started buzzing. Nobody cared about the drill anymore. Nobody cared about the championship. They only cared about one thing. Me. I grab my water bottle and empty half of it down my throat. “So….”Logan drawls, throwing an arm around my shoulders. “You have finally gotten yourself a girlfriend?” “I’ve had girlfriends.” “Not the one you announced to the entire campus.” The guys whistle. Mason pulls out his phone, “Listen to this,” he clears his throat dramatically, “Jace Knight publicly claims mysterious freshman after dumping queen bee Tiffany Bentley.” Another person whistles. Logan laughs, “Man, you’ve got the entire campus losing its mind.” I snatch t

Skye Kimberly’s face pales. “Skye…” “I have to.” “I can’t pretend to be his girlfriend.” “He’ll get over it.” “So will the school.” Before either of them can argue, my phone vibrates inside my pocket. Once. Twice. Three times. I frown. Slowly, I pull it out and The screen lights up. ROYAL HAVEN STUDENT FORUM PINNED POST Official announcement. Jace Knight: “ Skye Bennett is my girlfriend. Anyone who has a problem with that can deal with me.” Below it, Over two thousand likes. Hundreds of comments. And still climbing. My blood runs cold. Kimberly leans over my shoulder. “Oh…” Chloe reads the screen. “He actually meant it.” I stare at my phone so long my eyes begin to burn. What sort of problem is this? Even after the screen goes black, I still continue to stare at it. Several moment pass, nobody speaks. Not me. Not Chloe. Not Kimberly. The only sound is the distant whistle from the football field. Kimberly is the first to break the silence. “He actually posted it.”
