Jace

I wake up earlier than I planned.

For a few seconds, I lie there staring at the ceiling, listening to the silence of the house.

It feels strange being here again.

At college, there is always noise. Doors opening and closing, people shouting across hallways, music coming from someone’s room, football players arguing about practice, professors complaining about late assignments.

Here, everything is controlled. Quiet. Almost too quiet.

I get out of bed, pull on a pair of training shorts and a

Skye I barely sleep. Every time I close my eyes, I see Jace standing in the doorway of his dorm, his face unreadable as he looks at me.Go to Ethan, Skye. The words keep replaying in my head, over and over, until I finally give up trying to sleep.By the time my alarm goes off, I’m already staring at the ceiling.I reach for my phone and silence it before it can wake Chloe and Kimberly. For a few seconds, I stay where I am, staring at the faint light coming through the curtains.I should feel relieved.Jace made his position clear last night. There is no us. He doesn’t want whatever this strange thing between us has become, and he practically told me to go back to the person I’ve wanted all along.Ethan. That should make everything simple again. Except it doesn’t.I sit up and drag a hand through my hair. “Get a grip, Skye.” My voice sounds ridiculous in the quiet room.I get out of bed before I can think about it any longer.By the time I’m dressed and walking across campus, I’ve c

JaceThe moment the door closes, I just stand there. I stare at it. For several seconds, I don’t move. I can still see her face in my head. The way she looked at me.The way her voice changed when she said she wanted to talk about what happened between us.And the worst part? For one stupid second, I wanted to open the door again.I wanted to pull it open, stop her from leaving, and tell her she was wrong. Tell her that I hadn’t stopped thinking about her.Tell her that seeing her on the field had fucked with my head more than I wanted to admit.Tell her that when she stood there watching me with Tiffany, I noticed her the entire time. I noticed her the second she walked onto the field.I noticed the way she stood there, waiting for me to look at her. And I did. I fucking did. I just looked away. Because looking at her for too long would’ve made me do something stupid.I drag a hand through my hair and let out a sharp breath. “Fuck.” My chest feels tight.I hate this. I hate the way s

SkyeBy the time I get back to the dorm later, I’ve convinced myself that I’m fine. At least, that’s what I tell myself. The moment I step through the door, Chloe looks up from her bed. Kimberly is sitting cross-legged on the floor with her laptop open in front of her, and both of them glance at me at the same time.I smile. “Hi.”Neither of them answers immediately. Chloe narrows her eyes.“What?”She looks at Kimberly, then back at me. “What happened?”“Nothing.” The answer comes too quickly.Kimberly raises an eyebrow. “That sounded suspicious.”I drop my bag beside my bed and start taking off my shoes. “There’s nothing suspicious about it. I’m just tired.”“Tired?” Chloe repeats.“Yes.”She watches me for another second. “You look weird.”I stop pulling off my other shoe. “I always look weird.”“No, you don’t.” She sits up straighter. “You look like something happened.”Nothing happened. Nothing that should matter, anyway. I saw Jace. Tiffany walked over to him. They talked. He la

Skye I tell myself it’s because leaving now would make it obvious that I’m bothered. If I walk away the second Tiffany approaches him, anyone watching might think I’m jealous. I’m not jealous. At least, I shouldn’t be. Tiffany reaches Jace, and the smile on her face grows wider. She says something I can’t hear from where I’m standing, and Jace looks down at her. He doesn’t look annoyed. He doesn’t look like he wants her to leave. Instead, the corner of his mouth lifts. My chest tightens. I hate that I notice. I hate that I’m standing here watching them when I could easily turn around and leave. I could go back to the dorm, take a shower, put on something comfortable, and spend the rest of the evening with Chloe and Kimberly. That would be normal. That would be sensible. So why am I still standing here? Tiffany says something else, and Jace laughs. Actually laughs. The sound carries across the field, and something uncomfortable twists inside me. I’ve heard him laugh before.

Skye For a second, I just stand there. Jace. He’s really here. After two days of telling myself I don’t care whether I see him again, I suddenly don’t know what to do with myself now that he’s standing right in front of me. He’s farther across the field, holding a football in one hand while one of his teammates stands a few feet away. He’s listening to something the other guy is saying, but my eyes stay on him. He looks good. Too good. His hair is slightly damp, his shirt clings to his shoulders, and there’s something different about his face. He looks calmer. Lighter. Nothing like the angry boy who dragged me away from the party and told me to get out of his sight. I don’t know why that makes me nervous. Maybe because I don’t know which version of Jace I’m going to get. My fingers tighten around my bag. Surely he’ll see me. I wait. I don’t wave. I don’t call his name. I just stand there. Maybe he’ll notice me on his own. He always notices me. Even when he pretends he doesn’

  • Accidentally in bed with the wrong brother   Chapter 39

Skye I wake up the next morning determined not to think about Jace. That is the first thought in my head before I even open my eyes. I groan and pull the blanket over my head. This is ridiculous. He’s been gone for two days. Two. It’s not like he’s disappeared from the face of the earth. He’s at home. He has a family. He has a life outside this campus. He probably hasn’t thought about me once. And that’s exactly what I need to do. Stop thinking about him. I throw the blanket aside and sit up. Today, I’m going to have a normal day. I’m going to go to class, do my work, spend time with my friends, and come back to the dorm without wondering whether Jace is going to walk through a door. I’m going to prove that I can live without him. Not that I owe him anything. Not that he expects me to. I just need to prove it to myself. By the time I finish getting dressed, I almost feel convinced. I leave the dorm with Chloe and Kimberly, listening to them argue about whether we should order
