Chapter 4

CYRUS’S POV

I sat in the boardroom bored shitless out of my mind listening to old men telling me how to run my company,

I looked very much uninterested in what's going on here but believe me I would rather be somewhere else.

The company's CFO elaborated on the profit margin for the last quarter, project growth, market expansion, they were impressive I must say but I wasn't really impressed at least that's what I have to make them believe.

The whole room became quiet after the presentation waiting for me to pass on my verdict.

Executives sat round the polished glass table, I stood at the head of the table, my fingers resting lightly on the surface,gaze sweeping slowly across the room, everyone waiting calmly for me to speak.

“This,” I said calmly “is what you call aggressive growth?” I asked calmly, my gaze sweeping round the whole room and stopped at Hardin, the CFO.

Sweat rolled down the side of his temple

“We exceeded last quarter’s projection by 25 percent” he responded carefully

“Yes we did but sadly it's not enough”

“I am not impressed with that percentage, by next quarter I am expecting at least a 40 percent increment” I said calmly

And they all looked panicked

“It's nothing to be panicked about, we can do that, which is why I would be working hand in hand with the production team for our next launch,” “prepare your teams,” I said to the team heads.

“It's not going to be as usual, we are going to up our game, so anyone who won't be able to handle the pressure can quit now I won't take any form of SLAGGING”

No one argued, they only nodded their heads

“Very well then, have a nice day”

I gathered my tablet and walked out, my assistant fell into step beside me immediately updating me on my schedule for the day, I listened as he spoke.

“Sir, in 30 minutes time you have the orientation with the new interns, after which you have lunch with the representatives from LAUDEC TECH, then I have some documents that need your attention” he spoke

“Is that all Lawrence?”

“Yes sir, I made your evening free since today is your birthday you might have plans”

“My birthday?”

“Yes sir it's today”

“I know that, I'm just shocked you remembered and added that to my schedule too”

“It's part of my job sir not to only serve you but make sure you have a little social life included, I make sure to clear your schedule on all important days unless you want me to fill in up I can do that”

I stopped at the entrance to my office

“No that's fine, just give me a 5 minute reminder prior to the orientation”

“Okay sir” he replied, turning to his office which is directly opposite mine.

I walked into my office, my phone vibrated in my suit pocket

My mother

I sat at my table

sighed quietly before answering it “hello mother”

“Hello son”, “happy birthday”, she said warmly

“Thank you mother”

“Come home for dinner I will have them prepare your favorite, it's been so long I saw you”

“I was home last month mom, it's not that long”

“a whole month, wow so long, at least long enough for you to have found a serious lady to marry”,

“you should bring her over for dinner too” she continued

“Mom…”

“You’re 32 today Cyrus”

“I know my age”

“Good, then you know you're getting old, when do you plan to give me a daughter in-law and grandkids”

I sighed “and you wonder why I don't go home often” I muttered lowly

“What did you say?” She asked

“Nothing, mother those things will come when they are supposed to right now I have things to focus on”

“So when is the right time?” “ When your 40 or when you're no longer strong enough to satisfy a woman sexually”

“Jesus Christ mother”

“What?, look son, you're too handsome to be single, I know a lot of women are throwing themselves at you just pick a good one and make her your wife or if you want I could pick for you”

“Oh god, no mother. Okay, I will bring a woman to you”

Lawrence knocked on the door to remind me it's almost time to go.

“When?” She asked

“Soon mum don't rush me, now I have something to do so please mother excuse me, I love you mum, bye”

“Love you too son” she replied and ended the call

I exhaled, stood up carrying with me what I needed and headed out of my office for the orientation with the interns.

The hallways already filled when I walked in , over fifty fresh faces turned toward me instantly, conversations seizing the hall going quiet.

I took my place at the podium, resting my hands on the surface, my gaze sweeping across the room.

“Good afternoon everyone, welcome to C-Tech industries,” I began calmly. “You're here because you were the best among hundreds of people that applied, but that doesn't mean that you belong here already”.

“Your performance in the next three months will determine if you will qualify for that. I don't tolerate laziness or unnecessary excuses, if you can't handle pressure you can always leave, the door is always open”

Silence.

“Work hard, stay disciplined, do not cause trouble and show respect to your senior colleagues and you might just earn your place”.

“We are happy to have you here, make the best out of it, thank you”.

Other exvis and head of departments gave their speech then we took them on a tour round the company.

By the time I returned to my office it was almost time for my lunch meeting.

I sat down planning to rest a bit before heading out, then the door swung open.

“Happy fucking birthday asshole”, it was Ben, my best friend strolling in casually like he owned the place, that familiar grim plastered across his lips.

“Who the fuck let you in?” Asked dryly

“Please”, this place is just like my second home

I leaned into my chair, “ what do you want Ben?, because I'm heading out right now for a meeting”

“I'm here to save you from dying of boredom on your birthday but that can wait, run along for you little meeting I will wait right here for you”

I sighed,” don't you like patients to attend to?”

“Nope” he replied pooping the p, “I'm off today, wonderful isn't it”

“Whatever” I scoffed standing up changing suit then heading out of the office.

Lunch was practically business, very productive, by the time we stood to leave both parties were satisfied.

By later afternoon I was back in my office ready to go to my mom's for dinner

Dinner at my mother's was exactly what I expected.

She fussed over me endlessly, repeatedly reminding me that I was thirty two, unmarried and apparently running out of time.

And of course Ben was enjoying every bit of this until mum had to shut him up by asking the same question too, which led to him wanting to escape dinner quickly and I had to tag along too.
