Chapter 7

Author: Sunny Enchmarch
Yara's wounded expression froze. She opened her mouth and was about to argue, but her neck suddenly jerked in a violent spasm. She raised her hand, and her nails dug uncontrollably toward her collarbone.

At first, she only scratched lightly. A few seconds later, both hands were digging hard into the skin at her neckline and dragging down.

Five bright-red scratch marks appeared.

"It's so itchy... John… My whole body is itchy!" Yara screamed and writhed on the hospital bed, her hands clawing

When the first snow fell at the end of the year, the Shaw family's last mortgaged asset was seized and sold off. That same day, the new company under my name moved into the twin towers downtown. I bought a large apartment and Martha became the head housekeeper there. After John smashed her head open with a teapot, I paid for her treatment at the best private hospital and arranged a job for her daughter. Now, she cooked something different for me every day and helped me gain ten pounds. "Miss, eat the soup while it's hot." Martha walked over with a bowl, smiling widely. I took the bowl and sipped from it. The phone on the table vibrated and it was a bank transfer notification. A payment of five hundred dollars had arrived. The note read, [I got paid today. It's cold, so remember to dress warmly.] Over the past year, John had gone to the mines up north for work. My words about scraping a living from the dirt had come true, quite literally too. I heard that in his first

Yara's withdrawal symptoms from the banned drug lasted two full months. Because I had drained the company, Dad could no longer afford the expensive private ward, so he had to transfer her to a six-bed shared room. That day, I brought my legal team to the hospital to have Yara sign a debt transfer agreement. As soon as I reached the ward entrance, I heard things being smashed inside. Mom was holding Yara's flailing arms tight, while Yara bit Mom's shoulder hard enough to cause bleeding. Her eyes were red as she roared at Mom. "Give me the drugs. Go to the black market and buy them for me! I can't take it anymore!" Mom cried out in pain and held Yara's face with both her hands. "Yara, taking so much of that drug can kill you... Hold on a little longer… The doctor said you'll be fine once you get through this..." "I can't get through this." Yara shoved Mom away, her nails digging into the bedsheet. "If I hadn't been trying to drive that witch Renee out of the family, I would

Yara was tied to the hospital bed. The withdrawal from the drug, combined with the agony of her fractures, made her scream day and night. To stop her from hurting herself, the doctors used restraints to secure her limbs to the hospital bed's metal rails. She would only be able to use a wheelchair for the rest of her life. I left the Shaw family that very day. Half a month later, I was taking out the trash at my apartment building. When I turned around, John was standing beside the trash bins. He had lost so much weight that he looked like a different person. His eyes were dark, and his suit hung wrinkled on him. When he saw me, he quickly walked over to me and took something from his pocket, and held it out to me in both hands. It was the moonstone pendant he had torn out from my neck, the broken necklace had been replaced with a brand-new gold chain. "Renee..." John's voice was hoarse and thick with pleading. "I found the pendant and brought it back. I went to the mona

A few seconds later, both hands were digging hard into the skin at her neckline and dragging down. Five bright-red scratch marks appeared. "It's so itchy... John… My whole body is itchy!" Yara screamed and writhed on the hospital bed, her hands clawing wildly at her arms, chest, and thighs as if she had gone insane. Her hospital gown tore open, and large patches of skin were scratched raw. Blood ran down with skin flakes. John panicked and held her hands down. "Yara! Stop scratching! Be careful of your legs!" But Yara could not hear him at all. Her eyes rolled back, and a beastlike growl came from her throat. She broke free from John and went straight for her calves, which were encased in heavy casts. "There are insects in my bones! They'

The corridor went deathly silent. Only the sound of air moving through the vent could be heard. John froze in place, his lips moving slightly. "That's… Impossible... Doctor, did you mix up the lab report?" He snatched the papers from the doctor's hand and read them. "She has often clutched her chest and said it hurt to the point she couldn't breathe for years. It was all in her medical records!" Dad panicked too and picked up his cane again. "That's right, Doctor. We took her to private hospitals here and overseas. She hasn't been able to handle stress since she was little." The doctor looked stern as he took the papers back. "The tests don't lie. The episode a few days ago was the first real cardiac episode in her life." "We also found a large dose of ephedrine in her blood," The doctor said as he pointed at one item on the report. "This is a banned drug that can cause palpitations, shortness of breath, and even brief shock. "Her usual so-called heart attacks were just tox

"Yara is really sick. So sick that she is beyond saving. However, she suffers not from heart disease… Since you love to sit in a wheelchair so much, then you will never stand again." The room went dead silent. Yara shot up from the wheelchair and pointed at me as she screamed. "What are you talking about, you madwoman?!" The moment she finished speaking, several horrifying cracks rang out. Yara's legs, which had just straightened, bent backward at the knees in a grotesque way. "Ah!" She crumpled onto the carpet, clawing at her badly distorted legs as she howled. Mom was so frightened that she screamed, her eyes rolled back as she passed out cold. The hall fell into chaos. John was the first to react. With bloodshot eyes, he rushed toward Yara on the floor. "Yara! Ambulance! Call an ambulance now!" He took off his suit jacket and pressed it against the blood gushing from Yara's calves. White bone shards pierced through her dress, and his hands shook uncontrollably. He
