...

To protect my performance bonus, I swallowed my frustration and obtained the complainant's number.

The line went through, and a familiar, venomous voice rang out. "So, you've finally got the guts to call me, Jennifer Sargent. Tell me, did you sleep your way to manager?"

This customer had been a nuisance all morning, and now she was spreading vile rumors. My temper flared, but I kept my voice steady. "Miss, I've already refunded your smoothie. We've never met. Why did you file a complaint against me seducing your boyfriend?"

"Never met?" Her voice turned shrill. "I'm Lauren Miller, Matteo Velez's girlfriend, and you're trying to steal him!"

Her words made me laugh. Matteo was the courier she'd insisted on for her order. I had called him in to help. That was all.

Lauren's tone grew colder. "Cat got your tongue? Matteo took a sick day to bring me breakfast and avoid you, you old hag. He wouldn't touch you with a ten-foot pole!"

Finally, her words irritated me. My voice hardened. "If you're worried about him cheating, take it up with him. He's just a part-time worker here."

I'd only been running this smoothie shop for two months, but I'd already dealt with plenty of difficult customers. Lauren, however, was in a league of her own.

"I'm his boss," I continued. "His personal life doesn't concern me. But if you keep slandering me, I will sue you for defamation."

I hung up, rolling my eyes in exasperation. A coworker saw my reaction and asked, "Jennifer, who got you so riled up?"

I recounted the ordeal, and her smile faded. "Not her again."

I frowned. "She has called before?"

Sarah nodded with a grim expression. "Brace yourself. This isn't over."

I blinked, sighing, "We'll deal with it as it comes."

Matteo stormed in with a grim expression. "Jennifer, we are done talking from now on!"

I noticed his phone, hanging around his neck, displaying a call active for seven hours. He clasped his hands apologetically while distancing himself from me.

Eager to avoid more drama, I nodded. "Fine."

Lauren stared at me, then laughed. "I want enough money for me and my dad to live like kings forever. I want you and your dad to apologize to me. And I want Matteo to be my dog again."The room fell silent, every face darkening.Tears streamed down Pamela's face. She shouted, "No way! I'd rather die than let my son go near you again!"Lauren tightened her grip, and a trickle of blood ran down Pamela's neck.Matteo screamed, "Stop!"Tom's voice cracked. "Lauren, don't do this! Come home with me. You're my only daughter. You can't throw your life away."Her gaze finally landed on him. She laughed bitterly, "Home? I hate you the most! You were never there when I was a kid. Then you showed up, claiming to be the richest man, promising I could have anything. But you're a fraud. Why aren't you the real deal? Why are you such a pathetic loser?"Tom froze, his face contorting with agony. He hadn't expected his beloved daughter to despise him so deeply. "Lauren, please, calm down. Listen

So, Steven had sent Tom to run errands, never suspecting the latter would impersonate him, swaggering through a dozen small companies, including the smoothie shop, and pocketing bribes. The mansion Lauren lived in? Bought with Tom's dirty money.I sighed, shaking my head. "Driving fancy cars and living in a mansion. No wonder Lauren was so sure she was an heiress."My mom rolled her eyes. "A crow with peacock feathers is still a crow. Taking bribes? They belong in jail!"Steven nodded grimly. "We're gathering evidence."Just as I was about to speak, my phone rang. It was the headquarters again.Last time, they'd grilled me about Lauren's ridiculous accusations. This time, they were groveling to the real heiress.James's voice was meek. "Miss Sargent, I messed up today. Curse me, hit me, do whatever you want—just please, convince Mr. Miller not to pull the investment. We really need it."I paused, then said firmly, "No. This investment was my idea. I won't back a company that bu

Lauren's lips quivered, but no words came out.Tom yanked her arm, frantic. "Don't just stand there! Apologize, or you'll lose everything!"Lauren clenched her jaw. "No way! I'm an heiress!"She spun toward Matteo, screaming, "You want your mom to die? Her medicine has stopped. You got the text, didn't you? Get over here if you want her to live!"I smirked, unfazed. "Check your phone before you open your mouth."Her phone buzzed, and a man's voice roared through, loud enough for everyone to hear. "Lauren, you liar! You said you were an heiress and promised me a permanent job if I helped you control that woman. Now my mentor has kicked me out. What the hell is going on?"Lauren's bravado collapsed. She crumpled to the ground, screaming, "No! My dad is the richest man! I'm an heiress!"She paused, glaring at me with a manic grin. She pointed at Steven and growled, "Your last name is Miller, and hers is Sargent. How is she your daughter?"I rolled my eyes. "I took my mom's last na

I sighed, piecing it together. "That must be him. Dr. Nance, please handle this and keep looking after the patient."Leonard agreed, and I hung up. Matteo collapsed to the floor, tears streaming down his face.I ruffled his hair gently. "It's okay now. Go see your mom."As I helped him up to leave, Lauren broke free from Tom and charged at us like a wild animal. "Who said you could touch my dad's car? Do you know how much it's worth?"James joined in, yanking us back. "You're out of your mind! You couldn't afford a scratch if you sold yourself!""Really?" A deep, steady voice cut through the chaos, followed by a protective command. "Jennifer, smash that car. I'll buy you ten better ones."...My dad, Steven Miller, stood behind me, his eyes glinting with icy fury. Seeing him made the sting from Lauren's slap flare up, and my eyes welled with tears."Dad," I cried out.He spotted my swollen cheek, his expression darkening. "Who hit you?"I pointed at Lauren, who stood defiantl

James glared at me. "We don't need you here. Pack up and go!"I smirked, about to respond, when Matteo's panicked voice cut through. "Jennifer, the hospital texted. They stopped my mom's medicine!"...His grip on my wrist tightened, and my stomach sank.If Lauren could use her fake identity to interfere with the hospital, Tom must've been pulling strings behind our backs. With no time to dwell on it, I patted his arm. "It's okay. I won't let anything happen to her, I promise.""You promise? With what?" Lauren scoffed, crossing her arms. "At this point, you're still pretending. You know, in this city, I call the shots. If I don't agree, Pamela is as good as dead."Matteo's face paled. Pamela was his only family left in this world; he couldn't risk her life.He rushed to Lauren. "She is innocent! Why do you do this to her? You want me to quit, right? Fine, I'll do it."His shoulders slumped, his dignity crumbling.Lauren shot me a smug look, ordering him, "Say 'Jennifer is a t

...Tom, flanked by suited bodyguards in sunglasses, exuded an air of authority. If I didn't know better, I might've believed his act.Lauren stomped her foot, whining, "Dad, why are you stopping me? Someone is impersonating me! If we don't stop her, she'll walk all over us!"Tom patted her shoulder, soothing her. "Relax, sweetheart. With me here, no one is messing with you."Lauren lifted her chin and pointed at me. "Then fire this tramp who tried to seduce my boyfriend. Look, she is still holding him! Dad, I'm not being unreasonable. I warned her, but she ignored me. She even texted you, probably trying to flirt."I ignored them and turned to a rattled Matteo. "Why are you so scared of her? I get that you're worried about your mom, but you don't have to grovel. Without my permission, no one is going to cut off her medicine."I'd been anonymously supporting Matteo since I came of age. His father died young, and his mother worked herself sick to keep him in school.I couldn't be
