Chapter 4

作者: That's All
"Asher, you've seen the proof! How can you still deny it?" Graham demanded.

Evelyn turned away, refusing to even look at me. Instead, she continued comforting Josh, who was still huddled in her arms. "Oh, sweetheart, you've been through so much. And to think you've kept that apology letter all these years. It must have been so hard for you..."

The insults and accusations around me grew louder. Everyone had already made up their minds that I was a bully, and I felt crushed by their judgment.

But I barely heard any of it. I was too busy staring at the apology letter in disbelief. The handwriting was identical to mine. Even the signature was a perfect match, right down to the smallest stroke.

Yet I'd never written that letter. I'd never even seen that piece of paper in my life!

I took a deep breath and stood a little straighter. "Handwriting can be forged, and scars can be explained away. But there's no faking where I've been or what I've done with my life."

Without hesitating any longer, I hit the call button on my phone. Someone picked up almost immediately.

"911? I need to report a crime," I said, keeping my voice steady. "I'm outside the exit at Eastbridge Central Station. Someone is publicly accusing me of bullying them in high school and using a forged apology letter to back up their claims.

"They're making false accusations that are damaging my reputation. I'm also being threatened, and I don't feel safe leaving. Please send the police."

I hung up, and the crowd went silent.

Graham was shaking with anger. "Asher, do you really have to drag this family's name through the mud? Is that what you're trying to do?"

I turned to Josh. "I'm not the one ruining this family's reputation. The person making up lies and forging evidence is."

A few minutes later, police sirens sounded in the distance, growing louder as they approached.

Two officers pushed through the crowd, looking stern. "Who called 911? What's going on?"

Josh recoiled, and Graham quickly moved in front of him, forcing a smile. "Officers, it's just a misunderstanding. A little family dispute, that's all..."

I stepped forward.

"I made the call," I said calmly. "Josh Ashford has accused me of bullying him throughout high school, in front of all these people. He's also produced an apology letter that he claims I wrote. None of it is true. I've never even attended high school in this country.

"I want the police to check my school records and investigate these accusations. I also want whoever made them held legally responsible."

Josh's face drained of color. He quickly grabbed my hand. "Asher, I've already forgiven you. It all happened so long ago.

"If you don't want to admit it, that's fine. Just please don't make Mom and Dad angry over something that happened between us. We don't need to embarrass the whole family in front of everyone..."

I yanked my hand away and handed my ID to one of the officers. "You're missing the point, Josh. I'm the one who wants to take this further."

I turned to the police. "I want you to investigate what happened, check my school records, and clear my name. And I want Josh Ashford held accountable for falsely accusing me and fabricating evidence!"

The two officers exchanged a look. One of them took my ID and pulled out a handheld device, entering my information to check the records.

The seconds dragged on, with nothing but the faint tapping of buttons breaking the silence.

Josh grew increasingly pale, and his trembling got worse.

After several minutes, the officer finally looked up. He glanced at me, then at Josh, who was still clinging to Evelyn.

He raised his voice so everyone could hear. "I've checked the records. Asher Vale, 19 years old. He dropped out of school in eighth grade at 14, and there's no record of him ever attending high school."

The crowd erupted in shock, everyone talking at once.

Evelyn began, "Last time, you said we never raised you. I've been thinking about that a lot, and you're right."We didn't. We weren't there for any of those 19 years. While you were struggling to survive, I was living comfortably. I had a big house, nice clothes, vacations overseas…"I sent Josh to the best schools. And all that time, I had no idea you were going hungry or sleeping in the cold. I was wrong to yell at you at the train station that day. I never should've said those things."She wiped at the corners of her eyes. "I don't expect you to forgive me. I just... I needed to tell you that."She set the insulated bag on the ground, then turned and headed back to her car.As I watched her walk away, a memory from years ago came back to me.When I was little, back in the countryside, I used to sleep in a woodshed during the winter. Some nights, I'd wake up shivering and lie there staring at the thin strip of moonlight coming through a crack in the window.I would wonder what

I turned to face Evelyn. Sunlight poured through the floor-to-ceiling windows, lighting up her exhausted face.I almost told her we were practically strangers anyway. But then I saw her bloodshot eyes and hesitated."Maybe someday," I said.I rented a small one-bedroom apartment with a living room. When the sun came in, the whole place felt warm.My landlady was an older woman who knocked 200 dollars off the rent when she found out I would be living alone. On the day I moved in, she showed up at my door with a bowl of beef stew. She said it wasn't easy being young and trying to make it on your own. If I ever got homesick, I could always come downstairs and visit her.I thanked her and closed the door. Then I stood there for a long time, staring at the stew. In all my 19 years, no one had ever told me I was welcome to stop by whenever I felt homesick. The day Ashford Group posted its official apology, my phone rang nonstop. The calls came from numbers I didn't recognize. Some wer

"We put up missing-person notices all over the country! We spent millions trying to find you! Can't you at least try to understand our side of things?"I laughed. "You spent millions looking for me, but somehow you never found the village where I grew up. You ran my picture in newspapers and on TV, then sat in your mansion in Westhaven waiting for me to come home on my own."Graham went pale."You were looking for the son you'd lost, not the person I actually was. And when I finally showed up, poor and looking like I'd been through hell, you couldn't accept me."You'd rather believe I was a bully than face the fact that I'd grown up poor and spent my whole life just trying to survive."For a long moment, no one spoke. Graham and Evelyn stood outside my door, still clutching the expensive gifts they'd brought. Finally, Evelyn broke the silence. "Asher, I'm so sorry. We were wrong about the apology letter... We should've known better. But I swear, I had no idea Josh was lying. If I

I continued, "You took his side. You called me a horrible person and told me to get lost."Evelyn was shaking, tears streaming down her face. She tried to say something, but couldn't get the words out."You're my mother," I continued, "but you've never once trusted me."She finally broke down in tears.A few steps away, Graham stood with his back to us, his shoulders trembling. He didn't turn around. The police questioned Josh for four hours. He sat with his head down, answering their questions one by one.He told them how he'd learned that the Ashfords had found their biological son, how he'd hired someone to track down my adoptive parents, and how he'd approached Fiona Mercer with an offer of 200,000 dollars for samples of my handwriting."I was scared... I thought Mom and Dad wouldn't want me anymore once he came back. I just wanted him to back off. I wanted him to know he couldn't just show up and become part of this family… I wasn't trying to hurt him. I just... I didn't wa

"He paid someone for samples of your handwriting. The woman who sold them to him is named Fiona Garcia."Fiona Garcia. My adoptive mother."According to Josh, he contacted Fiona a month ago and offered her 200,000 dollars for samples of your handwriting. He then used them to forge the apology letter." The officer's voice was calm and matter-of-fact.The hallway fell silent. I could hear my own heartbeat, each thud like a dull blow to my chest.I'd dropped out of school at 14. I'd spent an entire year hauling steel rebar at construction sites and earned just 30,000 dollars.Later, I'd washed dishes at a restaurant, working from six in the morning until ten at night for 1,800 dollars a month.Fiona had taken every penny I'd earned, spending it on new schoolbags and phones for my younger brothers, as well as fees to get them into better schools. When I came to the city, I couldn't even afford a train ticket. A police officer had covered the fare for me.And Fiona had made 200,000

As soon as the officer finished speaking, Josh went pale.Evelyn was still staring blankly at my ID, as though she hadn't quite understood what she'd just heard."No record of him ever attending high school..." Graham repeated, his voice strained. He turned to Josh and swallowed hard, but couldn't bring himself to say anything. After a moment of stunned silence, the reporters erupted with questions."Wait, he's never been to high school?""Then what about Josh's bullying accusations? Who wrote that apology letter?""Josh, can you explain this?"Microphones were shoved toward Josh from every direction, and the cameras zoomed in on his pale face. His lips trembled as he struggled to find an answer. After a long pause, he suddenly burst into tears. "I... I don't know! Maybe he changed his name afterward, or someone else enrolled in school using his identity... I don't know!"He looked up at Graham, his eyes pleading. "Dad, I swear I'm telling the truth! The boy who bullied me bac
