Eden

A tear slipped free before I could stop it, burning like acid over the raw skin on my neck. I stumbled back into the dark clinic room, sinking into the edge of the bed.

Across me, Maya was humming a low, cheerful melody while she was wrapping her knuckles in leather, prepping for the next challenge.

Asher's scent of ozone and peppermint hit the air and cold fingers touched my throat. Asher.

I squeezed my eyes shut, as he wrapped the bandage over the injury, treating my skin like a machine.

EDENI dropped glowing rune-stone into the air pouch, feeling the cold, ancient mechanism click into place. The stone dissolved into a shimmer of golden dust, and the heavy iron gate ahead of me groaned open, letting in a shaft of pale, unfiltered sunlight.A wall of sound hit me all at once–the deafening roar of the stadium crowd, the blare of brass horns, and the chaotic, echoing cheers bouncing off the stone amphitheatre walls.I was close. I was nearly at the exit.A wild, desperate surge of joy flared in my chest. I broke into a full run, my boots tearing across the dirt path, the heavy dread of the forest lifting off my shoulders. I made it.I was about to be free. Really free. No more collars, no more abusive shadows hanging over the Thomas mansion, no more hiding behind borrowed strength. I could walk back into the academy on my own terms, hold my head high, and carve out a life that belonged entirely to me. Everything was going to be alright.Around me, the trees thinned in

ASHERI stared up from the cold library floor where I had dropped flat, my mind still violently trapped in the stages of denial, cycling back and forth through loops of bargaining. Why was her page torn out? Who had tried to scrub her existence from the academy's ancestral records?Groaning, I pushed myself up from the dust, grabbing the heavy genealogy ledger to slide it back onto the mahogany shelf. As I titled the spine, a thick, yellowed envelope slipped silently from the pages and fluttered down, landing with a soft slap against the floorboards. Thank the Goddess for today. Because of the grandstands filling up the trials and the chaos of the trial, the entire library was completely empty. I was entirely alone.I snatched the envelope from the floor , and tore the wax seal off. A single black-and-white photograph slid into my palm.My breath caught. It was a faded, archival snapshot of a group of children standing in front of a bleak, stone-walled orphanage. My eyes locked o

EDEN Darkness rushed in like a tidal wave, pulling me under the second Kia released her death grip on Kalen's throat. My vision went soft and hazy, the stone walls of the sanctuary blurring into streaking shadows of gray and black.Limb by limb, my body felt weightless, detached from my own skin as the exhausting toll of Kia's takeover dragged me straight into the deep.Consciousness returned in fragmented pieces. The rough bite of cold air against my cheek. The rhythmic, steady thud of leather boots against damp earth.I cracked my eyelids open, my throat raw and aching. Arms were hooked securely under my knees and shoulders, carrying me effortlessly through the shadowed treeline.I forced my chin up, my gaze swimming until it landed on the sharp, carved jawline of Crown Prince Kalen.“Where… where are we?” I slurred, my voice barely a drowsy rasp.Kalen didn't slow his pace, though a faint, wry smile touched his lips as he looked down at me.“Well,” he murmured, his voice rich and

JAXON I walked back through the stone steps of the elite viewing box, Killian parting words echoing like a hammer on bone in my skull. At least I'm trying to do something. Unlike you. Did they actually believe I didn't care? Did every blow I swallowed, every disciplinary line I walked to keep Eden from being evacuated on the spot seem like cowardice to them?I lowered myself into my velvet-lined seat, my jaw locked tight enough to crack molars.A rustle of silk announced Princess Rhaenys before she even spoke. She settled onto the chair beside me with deliberate, feline grace, her fingers trailing over the polished armrest. When I turned my head, her sharp eyes glinted with unmistakable mischief. Before I could open my mouth to dismiss her, she threw her head back and shrieked at the top of her lungs, projecting her voice straight across the silent, packed crowd below.“Yes, I will! Yes, I'll marry you, Jaxon!”The academic bells chimed overhead, echoing across the stadium grounds.

EDENI woke to the soft crackle of burning dry wood and the scent of woodsmoke mingling with damp earth. My eyes snapped open, my body instantly tensing as adrenaline flooded my veins. Across the flickering, low-burning campfires sat a figure draped in midnight-black robes embroidered with silver imperial thread. The Crown Prince Kalen. He sat cross-legged on the stone floor of the cave, poking a glowing ember with a charred stick as if he were sitting in his private parlor rather than a death-trap trial forest.“Sleep well, little wolf?” Kalen asked, not even looking up. His voice was smooth, carrying that effortless, toxic charm that always felt like a blade wrapped in kindness.“You looked entirely peaceful. Almost human.”I scrambled back against the cold stone wall, my hand instinctively dropping to the dagger strapped to my thigh.“What are you doing here?”Kalen tossed the stick into the fire, finally raising his head. His eyes gleamed with cold amusement in the dark.“Is that

KILLIAN I vaulted the stone steps two at a time, cutting through the roaring crowd until I reached the register and slammed my palms down on the registration desk.“I want to enter the dark forest as a supplementary support for Eden Thomas.” I demanded, breathing hard. The clerk didn't even look up from her parchment ledger, waving a hand dismissively. “Sorry. Not possible.”I learned across the desk, crowding into her space until my shadow fell over her face. “I'm Enforcer Commander Killian Cross.”The woman went rigid, her head snapping up. The moment she recognized the crest on my collar, she scrambled backwards in her chair, dipping her chin in a hasty, trembling bow.“My–My Lord,” she stammered, staring straight at the wooden desk. “I am sorry, but Professor Jaxon filed an administrative block an hour ago. You've been blacklisted from the contestant roster. if you go ahead with it and violate the rules and the council strips your title and your enforcer rank before you reach the
