Chapter 2

Auteur: Bagel
By the time I pushed open the door to our apartment, I was completely drenched by the storm.

Arthur was sitting on the living room sofa, his laptop resting on his lap.

He didn't even look at me.

"Look at the state of you. I told you to check the weather this morning."

I stood in the entryway. Water dripped from the ends of my hair, pooling into a dark stain on the marble floor.

When I didn't move, Arthur closed his laptop, walked over to hand me a towel, and then offered me a cup of hot tea.

I didn't take it.

"The evaluation system," I said, my voice flat. "You gave me a C, and you gave Jessica the highest grade."

"Why did you give her the highest and me the lowest?"

Arthur sat back down on the sofa, interlacing his fingers behind his head.

"To avoid suspicion. For the sake of fairness."

I was completely bewildered.

"You've been promoted too fast these past few years. For a while now, there have been rumors in upper management suspecting that I was pulling strings for you behind the scenes."

"If I hadn't suppressed your score, the other board members would have inflated it just to curry favor with me."

"If I gave you a high score too, your promotion this time would lack credibility. Those rumors would become undeniable facts."

"So that lowest score had to be given by me."

I looked at him and let out a laugh, my throat tasting bitter.

"Arthur, it's been seven years. When have I ever used your name to get a single opportunity?"

"Which of those contracts didn't I secure personally? For this promotion, I applied using my own performance metrics. You know this better than anyone."

He picked up the whiskey next to him and took a sip. The glass clinked softly against the glass coffee table.

"That's because you still don't understand the rules. In a corporation, the moment people catch even a whiff of nepotism, your hard work becomes a joke."

"I did it for your own good, Vivian. I don't want these messy rumors destroying your reputation."

"I gave Jessica an A+ because she delivered her presentation entirely off-script. She was emotionally engaged and poised. She deserved that score."

"So you admit it. You gave her an A+ not because she's more capable than me, but because she was 'poised'?"

Arthur's face instantly darkened. He stood up abruptly and strode toward me. "Vivian, can you stop blaming everyone else every time you lose?"

"When you lose, you need to accept it."

I tilted my head back, forcing the tears down. My eyes burned as if they were on fire.

"If my abilities were truly inferior to hers, I would sincerely congratulate her. But the person who made me lose was you!"

"It was my lover of seven years! The man who watched me work my fingers to the bone for him! You were the one who erased all my blood, sweat, and tears with an absurd C!"

Arthur irritably loosened his tie. He grabbed me, his arms locking around me to stop my struggling.

"Stop making a scene," he snapped. "Can you think about me for once?"

"My woman needs to see the big picture. Be a little more obedient, okay? Like Jessica. If she had lost today, she would only smile and congratulate you."

At the mention of Jessica, his tone inexplicably softened. "She always looks up. She never blames others."

I let out a laugh as tears fell, landing on his shirt.

"Arthur, I compromised myself for seven whole years."

"What breaks my heart is that we never had a normal relationship! Going Dutch for seven years, returning every gift you gave me, refusing to ride in your car to work, laying all my performance records out for the whole company to check..."

"I forced myself to live this way just to prove that I didn't care about your money at all!"

Arthur didn't answer. His muscles were strung tight. A strange flash of panic crossed his deep eyes as he stared fixedly at me.

I pushed him away and slowly crouched down, bracing one hand on the freezing floor. Water from my wet hair dripped down, mixing with my tears.

"Seven years..."

"I worked so hard... why do I have nothing in the end... why did the person to break my heart have to be you..."

I hugged my knees and sobbed aloud, my shoulders trembling uncontrollably.

He immediately walked over, frowning, wanting to pull me into his arms once again.

"Alright, let's stop fighting, okay?"

His voice lowered, laced with something that even he might have mistaken for tenderness. "I did all this for our future."

Just then, his phone rang.

He pulled it out, glanced at the screen, and then let go of me.

The second he answered, his voice instantly softened, becoming patient and gentle. A completely different person.

"Jessica?"

"Oh, that project analysis... I'll send you a template for reference. It's no trouble at all."

"Mr. Whitmore... am I just really stupid..." Jessica's soft, delicate voice drifted from the receiver.

"Don't overthink it. Take your time. I'll teach you."

He casually grabbed a towel from the armrest of the sofa and gently draped it over my shoulders.

He put a finger to his lips, silencing me with a look.

"She's still rushing to finish a proposal."

He turned around, slid open the floor-to-ceiling glass door, and stepped out onto the balcony. With his back to me, he lowered his voice and continued explaining things to her.

I knelt there on the floor. The dry towel on my shoulder still held the warmth of his palm.

Outside the window, the rain never stopped.

The days were long, but the years were short.International acquisitions closed, one after another. The soldati under my command were honed into weapons of absolute loyalty. On weekends, I would go to the penthouse shooting range for target practice, throw parties on yachts with friends from the business world, or simply enjoy the breeze quietly on the terrace of the estate.Eventually, I met someone new. A new relationship bloomed. A marriage was planned. The night of my engagement, I was curled up lazily in a leather sofa at the estate, twisting the pigeon's blood ruby on my ring finger. My private phone, resting on the coffee table, lit up.I swiped the screen. It was a short text from an unsaved number:[Vivian, will you really never look back?]I stared at it expressionlessly for two seconds. Then I hit the lock button and placed the phone face down on the table. My fiancé, Luca, the heir to another powerful family, walked over from the bar carrying two glasses of bourbon on the r

We sat across from each other in a private room at a high-end Italian restaurant owned by my family. Outside the floor-to-ceiling windows, dusk was settling in.I chose this place because every waiter here would politely escort anyone out the moment I raised an eyebrow. When I arrived, Arthur was already sitting in the room.An open bottle of Barolo, two empty glasses."Vivian, I know very well that the stupid decision I made three years ago was entirely wrong.""I admit all of it.""I want to use everything I have to make it right."I picked up the glass of water in front of me, took a sip, and set it down."Whatever you want, I'll give it to you.""Shares, real estate, equity in any company I own... as long as you say the word, I'll give it all to you."I looked straight into his eyes. "Arthur, if I wanted what you have, I wouldn't need you to give it to me. I'd take it. Do you still see yourself as the man on high, here to grade my performance?""Even now, you don't get it. You neve

When the banquet ended, I waited for my car at the back entrance of the club.Arthur's tall frame approached. The scent of alcohol clung to him.He was always so controlled, never drinking to excess. In seven years, I'd never once seen him drunk.Tonight, he had drunk a lot."Vivian."I turned my head. The wall lamp in the back alley shone on his face—half in light, half in shadow. He stood on the top step, the wind blowing the hem of his coat."Come back to me."His voice was pitched low, as if he were afraid of startling something."Let's start over. Okay?"I looked into his eyes. Those were the same deep eyes I remembered from under the cherry blossoms in Central Park, seven years ago. The kind that had once promised to hold my entire world.Except three years ago, when he looked at me, there was nothing left inside but judgment. But now, the pleading in his eyes had come far too late.I laughed a little and looked down."Arthur.""Three years ago, you called me 'unprofessional,' an

At a commercial negotiation for a North District real estate development, the delegation from the opposing company walked into the conference room. The door pushed open. The moment our eyes met, I saw Arthur, dressed in a sharp suit.He was much thinner than he was three years ago. The lines of his jaw were sharper, harder, and his deep-set eyes held a darkness I hadn't seen before. The moment he saw me, his steps faltered, and his breath hitched. Then he walked around the long table, approached me, and held out his hand. "Long time no see, Vivian."I barely gave him a glance. He was still wearing the same plain silver band on his ring finger.I reached out, lightly brushed my fingertips against his palm, and pulled away in less than a second."Mr. Whitmore." I settled back into the chair at the head of the table and tapped the proposal."Let's not waste time. You can start with your proposal.""Let's begin."For the entire two-hour meeting, he sat across the long table.I could feel h

Jessica's smile froze on her face. "Wh... what did you say?""Book your own ticket. Go back, pack your things, and get out of my sight."Arthur turned around and grabbed his suit jacket from the back of his chair.Jessica took two desperate steps after him, tears instantly welling in her eyes. "Arthur! What did I do wrong? Tell me—"He stopped for a half-second. "Those filthy little tricks you played behind my back... did you really think I couldn't find out?""You even dared to steal the ruby brooch the company prepared for a client, wear it in photos to show off on social media?""And don't ever set foot in San Rovia again. If I see your face in this city again, I have a hundred ways to make you wish you'd never been born."On the highway to the airport, he frantically sent messages to Vivian. His screen was a wall of red exclamation marks. When he tried to call, he was met only with the cold, mechanical voice of an operator. He gripped his phone in his palm, his knuckles turning whi

At a high-end French restaurant in Kingsburg, the candlelight flickered softly.Arthur absentmindedly glanced at his phone, then tossed it back onto the table.Sitting across from him, Jessica was holding a glass of red wine, her smile delicate and radiant."Arthur, I recalculated the reserve price for the acquisition. We can squeeze another fifteen percent out of the profit margin.""Hmm."He gave a perfunctory response, his gaze drifting past the floor-to-ceiling windows to the bustling nightscape below. An unexpected emptiness opened up in his chest. He suddenly remembered the afternoon he had pulled Jessica out of the office area. He had looked back.Vivian's eyes, usually so full of warmth, had held nothing but a chilling emptiness.Until that moment, he never imagined Vivian could look at him like he was a stranger.Did she hate him?"Arthur?" Jessica called his name again."Yeah. Go on.""I'm finished.""Alright. Let's leave it at that then."He grabbed his napkin and haphazardl
