Chapter 3

Author: Bagel
Walking into the office the next day, I could hear the buzzing from the breakroom from far away.

I pushed the door open with my mug in hand, and the chatter instantly died down.

Someone cleared their throat. Someone pretended to look down at their phone.

"Did you hear? The one who tried to sleep her way to the top completely crashed and burned."

"She always acted so holier-than-thou, but who knows what she was really doing in the boss's bed."

"Too bad for her. Jessica actually earned her A+ with real skill."

"Man, do you think she just got too old and her tricks in bed stopped working?"

I stood frozen. My nails dug into my palms inch by inch, but I couldn't feel the pain.

Jessica was walking over, hugging a stack of project proposal binders. The binders were the heavy duty kind, with sharp metal corners.

"Vivian, you're here."

"I really felt awful about what happened yesterday. You have more seniority than me, and winning against you made me feel like I did something wrong..."

"But there are still a lot of questions I need to ask you. I don't understand these Kingsburg materials. Could you teach me?"

She held the heavy stack of metal-bound binders out in front of me with both hands, holding them there for a full five seconds.

I reached out to take them. The very second my fingertips brushed the bottom, she suddenly let go.

The twenty-pound stack of binders crashed down. The sharp metal corners slammed into the back of my hand.

My flesh tore open instantly. A line of dark red beads of blood splattered across the carpet.

I inhaled sharply, breaking out in a cold sweat from the excruciating pain.

Jessica froze for a half-second before clutching her own wrist, her eyes immediately welling up.

"Vivian... why, why didn't you catch it securely?"

"It's my fault. The binders were too heavy, and my wrist has been acting up..."

Her tears fell, her voice trembling.

"My grip just slipped... I'm sorry, I'm really sorry..."

The eyes of everyone around us immediately snapped over.

"She just asks for advice, and Vivian drops the files on purpose? So petty."

"Pulling this kind of petty crap just because she lost a promotion. So ugly."

"What is going on here?"

Arthur walked briskly down the corridor.

His gaze swept over the mess on the floor and finally locked onto the bleeding back of my hand.

His jawline tightened, and his foot subconsciously took a step forward.

At that moment, I truly believed he was going to walk toward me first.

"I just wanted to ask Vivian for advice, but she didn't catch it securely..."

Jessica's voice rang out. She was clutching her wrist and sobbing, looking utterly pitiful.

"I didn't..."

"Did you hurt your wrist?"

Before I could finish, Arthur abruptly stopped in his tracks, cut me off, and turned to look at Jessica.

Jessica sniffled, holding out her perfectly fine wrist. "It hurts a little. I might have sprained it..."

Only then did he turn his gaze to me. His eyes lingered on my bleeding hand for half a second.

Once again, I subconsciously thought he was going to say something, but the words he spat out were as cold and hard as iron.

"Clean up this mess."

"Arthur..." I opened my mouth, looking at the gash on my hand that was deep enough to show bone.

"Stop making a scene. Go to the infirmary and get that taken care of."

His voice was completely flat, devoid of any emotion.

I looked at him from three steps away. He was so familiar, yet he felt like a complete stranger.

I parted my dry lips, but ultimately clenched my jaw.

I opened my mouth, then closed it.

Whatever. He wasn't going to listen to anything I said anyway, was he?

The blood was still dripping. I braced one hand on the floor and, enduring the piercing pain, picked up the files one by one.

When I returned from getting stitches at the infirmary, Jessica was no longer at her desk.

On my desk sat an unopened tube of imported antibacterial ointment, pinning down a sticky note.

[Remember to apply this.]

Familiar handwriting.

I picked it up, took one look, and threw it into the trash can by my feet.

My computer screen woke up, and my task list popped up, filling the entire screen.

That project analysis Jessica was supposed to do was in there too.

Arthur had approved a full day of paid leave for her.

I stared at the screen. The back of my bandaged hand throbbed with every keystroke, and fresh blood started to seep through the gauze.

The sky outside the window slowly darkened.

At exactly six o'clock in the evening, I typed the final line.

I closed the report, opened the HR backend system, and typed two words on a blank page:

Resignation Letter.

The days were long, but the years were short.International acquisitions closed, one after another. The soldati under my command were honed into weapons of absolute loyalty. On weekends, I would go to the penthouse shooting range for target practice, throw parties on yachts with friends from the business world, or simply enjoy the breeze quietly on the terrace of the estate.Eventually, I met someone new. A new relationship bloomed. A marriage was planned. The night of my engagement, I was curled up lazily in a leather sofa at the estate, twisting the pigeon's blood ruby on my ring finger. My private phone, resting on the coffee table, lit up.I swiped the screen. It was a short text from an unsaved number:[Vivian, will you really never look back?]I stared at it expressionlessly for two seconds. Then I hit the lock button and placed the phone face down on the table. My fiancé, Luca, the heir to another powerful family, walked over from the bar carrying two glasses of bourbon on the r

We sat across from each other in a private room at a high-end Italian restaurant owned by my family. Outside the floor-to-ceiling windows, dusk was settling in.I chose this place because every waiter here would politely escort anyone out the moment I raised an eyebrow. When I arrived, Arthur was already sitting in the room.An open bottle of Barolo, two empty glasses."Vivian, I know very well that the stupid decision I made three years ago was entirely wrong.""I admit all of it.""I want to use everything I have to make it right."I picked up the glass of water in front of me, took a sip, and set it down."Whatever you want, I'll give it to you.""Shares, real estate, equity in any company I own... as long as you say the word, I'll give it all to you."I looked straight into his eyes. "Arthur, if I wanted what you have, I wouldn't need you to give it to me. I'd take it. Do you still see yourself as the man on high, here to grade my performance?""Even now, you don't get it. You neve

When the banquet ended, I waited for my car at the back entrance of the club.Arthur's tall frame approached. The scent of alcohol clung to him.He was always so controlled, never drinking to excess. In seven years, I'd never once seen him drunk.Tonight, he had drunk a lot."Vivian."I turned my head. The wall lamp in the back alley shone on his face—half in light, half in shadow. He stood on the top step, the wind blowing the hem of his coat."Come back to me."His voice was pitched low, as if he were afraid of startling something."Let's start over. Okay?"I looked into his eyes. Those were the same deep eyes I remembered from under the cherry blossoms in Central Park, seven years ago. The kind that had once promised to hold my entire world.Except three years ago, when he looked at me, there was nothing left inside but judgment. But now, the pleading in his eyes had come far too late.I laughed a little and looked down."Arthur.""Three years ago, you called me 'unprofessional,' an

At a commercial negotiation for a North District real estate development, the delegation from the opposing company walked into the conference room. The door pushed open. The moment our eyes met, I saw Arthur, dressed in a sharp suit.He was much thinner than he was three years ago. The lines of his jaw were sharper, harder, and his deep-set eyes held a darkness I hadn't seen before. The moment he saw me, his steps faltered, and his breath hitched. Then he walked around the long table, approached me, and held out his hand. "Long time no see, Vivian."I barely gave him a glance. He was still wearing the same plain silver band on his ring finger.I reached out, lightly brushed my fingertips against his palm, and pulled away in less than a second."Mr. Whitmore." I settled back into the chair at the head of the table and tapped the proposal."Let's not waste time. You can start with your proposal.""Let's begin."For the entire two-hour meeting, he sat across the long table.I could feel h

Jessica's smile froze on her face. "Wh... what did you say?""Book your own ticket. Go back, pack your things, and get out of my sight."Arthur turned around and grabbed his suit jacket from the back of his chair.Jessica took two desperate steps after him, tears instantly welling in her eyes. "Arthur! What did I do wrong? Tell me—"He stopped for a half-second. "Those filthy little tricks you played behind my back... did you really think I couldn't find out?""You even dared to steal the ruby brooch the company prepared for a client, wear it in photos to show off on social media?""And don't ever set foot in San Rovia again. If I see your face in this city again, I have a hundred ways to make you wish you'd never been born."On the highway to the airport, he frantically sent messages to Vivian. His screen was a wall of red exclamation marks. When he tried to call, he was met only with the cold, mechanical voice of an operator. He gripped his phone in his palm, his knuckles turning whi

At a high-end French restaurant in Kingsburg, the candlelight flickered softly.Arthur absentmindedly glanced at his phone, then tossed it back onto the table.Sitting across from him, Jessica was holding a glass of red wine, her smile delicate and radiant."Arthur, I recalculated the reserve price for the acquisition. We can squeeze another fifteen percent out of the profit margin.""Hmm."He gave a perfunctory response, his gaze drifting past the floor-to-ceiling windows to the bustling nightscape below. An unexpected emptiness opened up in his chest. He suddenly remembered the afternoon he had pulled Jessica out of the office area. He had looked back.Vivian's eyes, usually so full of warmth, had held nothing but a chilling emptiness.Until that moment, he never imagined Vivian could look at him like he was a stranger.Did she hate him?"Arthur?" Jessica called his name again."Yeah. Go on.""I'm finished.""Alright. Let's leave it at that then."He grabbed his napkin and haphazardl
