Bellatrix set down the phone. She didn’t want this marriage at all anymore. She was certain Regina would be more than happy to see it end.
Regina was the illegitimate daughter of her father had after a drunken mistake. When Bellatrix angrily confronted her father about it, her mother stood up and accepted Regina.
Her kind-hearted mother believed that a child was innocent. She taught Bellatrix that resentment would never lead to happiness. Even when Regina always stole her toys, her mother still urged her to forgive.
On the day her mother died unexpectedly, Regina didn’t even attend the funeral. Yet Bellatrix held on to her mother’s words—do not resent Regina.
Even when Cillian suddenly declared Regina to be the love of his life, Bellatrix never outwardly showed her heartbreak. But now, Regina returned, acting like their whole family had wronged her—again. And once more, Cillian didn’t think—he just sided with her.
Bellatrix refused to bow to Cillian’s authority. Her father could never bear the news that she was dying.
Her phone remained silent, with no reply from Regina. She was too exhausted. She wanted to rest—when suddenly, it rang.
It was Elise, the senior housekeeper of the Lancaster estate—someone who had long been like family to them.
“Miss Lancaster!” Elise shouted, her voice frantic.
Bellatrix frowned. “What’s wrong, Aunt Elise?”
“It’s your father, young miss,” Elise began, growing more anxious with every word. “He collapsed suddenly in the early hours this morning.”
For a moment, it felt like her heart stopped. The pain in her chest surged again. A wave of fury overtook her—Cillian. He really did it.
She had to go home. She had to see her father.
“Lancaster Tower,” she told the cab driver as she got in.
As the car moved, her thoughts drifted back to her father. After her mother’s death, he had been the only family she had left.
Elise and the family doctor were already waiting for her when she arrived. She ran straight to them.
“Dr. Horan, how is my father?” she asked urgently.
“Master Lancaster suffered a heart attack this morning, but thankfully, it wasn’t severe. We managed to stabilize him and prevent further damage,” Dr. Horan said.
Bellatrix breathed a momentary sigh of relief—until he continued.
“But,” he said.
“But?” Her heart tightened again.
“We ran some additional tests,” he explained. “I discovered plaque buildup in his arteries. If he’s subjected to any more stress, it could trigger a stroke.”
Her eyes widened. “Is there any way to stop it?”
Dr. Horan shook his head and gently patted her shoulder. “The only thing I can recommend now is rest. He must remain calm and avoid further agitation. Beyond that... we can only hope for the best.”
“I understand,” Bellatrix murmured. If her father knew about her condition, it would only make things worse.
Dr. Horan nodded with sympathy. “If you need anything, call me immediately.”
With that, he left. Bellatrix didn’t hesitate—she rushed upstairs and entered her father’s room.
Everything inside looked just as she remembered. But Joe Lancaster no longer looked like the energetic man he had always been. His face was pale, and he lay weakly in bed, staring out the window.
“Dad.”
He turned to her and smiled faintly. “Bella,” he said. “You’re here.”
Her chest tightened. Her eyes stung. She slowly approached the bed. Seeing him so fragile and weak broke her heart.
All these years, she had focused only on Cillian, playing the obedient housewife, desperately trying to win his affection—while neglecting the only family she had left.
Now, looking at her father like this, the guilt consumed her.
“Dad, what happened? Why... why are you like this?” she knelt beside him and held his hand.
Before he could respond, Elise entered the room.
He gave her a subtle shake of his head, but Bellatrix reached out and grabbed Elise’s hand, commanding, “Tell me the truth, Aunt Elise. If you really care about my father’s health.”
Elise sighed. “Your father’s company has been facing financial issues recently. Almost all investors have pulled out. The board is in chaos—they don’t know what to do. The final straw was yesterday. One of the biggest investors called and announced he’s withdrawing. His exit would cause Lancaster Group to go bankrupt. That’s when your father collapsed.”
Bellatrix’s fury surged again.
It had to be Cillian.
And then—another wave of shame crashed over her. Cillian had treated her father so cruelly, and yet she had still loved him.
She clenched her jaw.
How foolish she had been.
“I’m sorry, Dad,” she whispered.
He looked at her with a soft smile. “Don’t apologize. This is all my fault. I didn’t make the right decisions. Don’t worry... I’ll—”
He started coughing violently before he could finish.
“Dad!” Bellatrix’s eyes widened in alarm. Fear and panic gripped her chest. “Please, lie back. Don’t push yourself. It’ll be okay. Everything will be fine.”
She gently helped him recline. A few seconds later, Elise returned with a glass of water and handed it to him.
He took a sip. Gradually, his breathing calmed, the color returned to his face, and the tension in his hands eased.
“I’m sorry, Bella,” he said weakly.
“Don’t be, Dad. Just rest now,” she whispered, watching as he closed his eyes and drifted to sleep.
Her phone buzzed. A message from Regina.
She opened it—it was an address.
“Cillian is with me. I know you’re looking for him.”
Regina’s follow-up text came seconds later.
Bellatrix walked out of the estate without hesitation and got into a car.
But the moment she arrived at the address Regina had sent, she heard the intimate voices of a man and a woman outside the door.
~Five Years Later~Winter was approaching rather hastily. The cold, despite the sun in the sky, was harsh, finding a way to make people wish they could curl up in the warm comfort of their homes. But despite that, a certain group of people were as alert as ever, holding their cameras and microphones high at the entrance of London's airport. The chatter was loud and the excitement was apparent on the media's faces as they waited for their target to appear, hovering around the welcoming section of the airport like flies.Anyone passing would easily have thought they were waiting to catch a glimpse of a famous celebrity.Well, not too far off."I feel like I've stumbled into a gold mine," One of the reporters whispered, grinning from ear to ear like a child who had just successfully stolen a hundred dollar bill from her mother's purse. The person beside her, although they didn't know each other, was quick to agree with what she had just said. "Indeed, I've been meaning to land an intervi
Half a year went by in the blink of an eye.In a private hospital in Paris, a woman, clad in a black dress, with a matching hat over her head, walked through the door, her steps light and graceful, just like her appearance.A young male nurse, who had been stationed right by the door, stood up upon her arrival and greeted her with a bright smile."Miss Smith, it's nice to see you again. Are you here to visit your sister again?"Avery flashed the young male a simple smile despite the urge to punch him in the face for constantly speaking to her."Yes, I am.""I see," The nurse nodded. "Pass my greetings unto her, K?""Of course," Avery said, but just as she was about to walk away, she stopped, turned to the nurse and asked the one question she's constantly asked since day one. "Has anyone come to visit her?"The nurse shook his head. "Not a single soul, Miss Smith."Ava held her breath and forced a smile. "I see, thank you. Excuse me,"With that, she walked away, maneuvering her way thr
Two weeks had flown by in agonizing silence. In that period of time, Cillian learnt two things. One; No matter what was thrown at the media, whether true or not, they were ready to eat it up and hover around the source of the news, in this case, unfortunately being he and Regina, as long as they got the scope they wanted.Less than 4 hours after the news of Bellatrix's death hit the internet, several of he and Regina's supposed affair had made headlines. The sudden revelation drowned out the news of Bellatrix's death and soon, he became the hottest celebrity in town. But not for a good reason. A husband's affair being exposed shortly after his wife's death, didn't bring about the type of publicity Cillian had always strived to achieve. With the hit to his public image, came damage to Aetherion's name. Aetherion lost several clients and the stock value plummeted like the rain that continued to fall during that period. The second thing Cillian had come to learn, much to his utter dismay
"The media suddenly got wind of the relationship between you and Miss Lancaster and now, the entire thing and her death, is all over the news!"As he heard Kane's words, Cillian's jaw tensed. His grip on his phone tightened and he felt his stomach twist in frustration. One trouble after another, it was almost as if the universe was playing some sick, twisted game."Sir? What should we do?" Kane urged.Cillian gritted his teeth. "Reach out to the PR team and make sure they control the situation. If there's anyone who asks questions, don't say anything, just direct them to the PR team. All articles posted online should be handled accordingly and make sure the company's image isn't tarnished.""Understood, sir.""One more thing," He began."Yes, what is it, sir?""I need you to do a deep dive on Avery Smith. Find out her current whereabouts and where she's been in the past twenty four hours. Do it quickly and get the information back to me as soon as possible.""Understood, sir,"Cillian
Cillian shot up from his seat the moment he heard Kane's words. His eyes widened a fraction and his hands trembled slightly."What?""Miss Lancaster's body is missing," Kane repeated tentatively. "The morgue reached out a short while ago to inform you of the disappearance because they couldn't reach Miss Lancaster's family. They said..."The rest of Kane's words were blocked out by the rising sound of tinnitus in Cillian's ear. He stared blankly, not paying any attention to a word his assistant was saying.Instead, he focused his mind on a single thought.Bellatrix's body was missing. The only thing he could have of her was...gone."...llian...Cillian. Cillian?!" Rourke's voice snapped him out of his thoughts and by the time Cillian blinked, he was already in front of his office door, hand on the door knob."Where are you going?" His friend looked at him like he had grown two heads, or rather, like he was about to do something he shouldn't.When Cillian didn't respond, but Rourke noti
In the days that followed after Bellatrix's death, everywhere was gloomy. The clouds above were dark from the continuous days of rain that had fallen. In the head office of Aetherion, the mood was just the same, dark and gloomy and Kane, who had just walked in early, could feel the suffocating tension in the room.It was as if Bellatrix had taken all liveliness with her when she died and even Cillian wasn't an exception to that effect. For the past few days, the air around him had been so tense, Kane had found it hard to be around him.The employees of Aetherion had suffered their own equal share of the tragic aftermath as Cillian would either snap at the slightest of mistakes or completely ignore anyone who attempted to speak to him.His mood had progressed so bad till the point that when Kane tried bringing him his breakfast or lunch, he'd simply wave him off, and ask him to leave it at some random location and end up not eating it."You're going to starve at this rate," He muttered
