I eyed the side of Professor Bancroft's face. The chilling grin that curved his lips. He had shifted to challenge again... allowing me to back out and maybe I should have taken it, but I didn't. "I'm interested in seeing your approach" I said evenly, matching his tone. I felt his gaze on me for a second and then he looked away. The drive continued in silence until he drove to the gates of a huge mansion. I tried not to leave my mouth hanging open in shock at the sight of the massive building that sat in front of us. I knew Professor Bancroft was wealthy from his expensive clothes and perfume and just the way he carried himself in general but I wasn't expecting something as grand as this. "We're here" Professor Bancroft announced in an even voice that made my stomach clench. My door opened from the outside. A tall man in a fitted back suit stood outside, holding it open. I looked over at Professor Bancroft but he was already climbing down so I followed. He walked around the car to stand beside me. "This is my guest tonight Nigel" "Good evening m'lady" Nigel greeted politely, his smile warm as he stared at me. "Will you be dining together or..." "No" Professor Bancroft cut him off sharply. "We'll be uninterrupted during her visit" Nigel nodded once, no question asked. "This way Julia" I didn't miss the way he stretched out my name, his accent thicker in a way I'd never noticed before. "Right.." I breathed out and turned towards the house. Professor Bancroft slipped beside me, his palm sitting on the small of my back as he guided me up the stairs. It was only a small touch...a courteous gesture yet the warmth stepped through the material of my dress. I forced my legs to move when they tried to stop, keeping a composed posture instead of letting my confusion disrupt me. The doorman opened the door into a foyer. Professor Bancroft stepped away, taking his warmth with him and I watched him pull off his coat. I looked away as he hung it on the coat rack and I stared ahead into the sitting room. The view from here was nothing like I imagined. I expected his home to be as cold and empty as his office but it had a lively feeling...and colour. Like someone had put a lot of thought into actually making it a home instead of a living space. "Julia" his palm landed on the small of my back again and I tensed in surprise. Professor Bancroft said nothing as he steered me towards the grand staircase that curved elegantly into the second floor. We walked up the stairs, the silence making my heart pound faster than it should have. Maybe Professor Bancroft could hear it but he said nothing and walked us steadily. The second floor had a different feel from what I'd seen downstairs. It carried the perfect representation of Professor Bancroft. Cold, empty. And for a moment, it felt like someone different lived downstairs. He led me down another hallway and into an open office, much bigger than the entire faculty office. I stared in amazement at the tall shelves lined with books. Color graded from what I could see. He had taken great care and time to make that possible. The rest of the office was neat. A leather couch sat behind a carved center table, two armchairs sat by the window on the left hand and his mahogany desk taking up more of the room sat on the other end. And just like his office, it was empty. "Wine?" His voice came from behind me. Close enough that I could almost feel the brush of his clothes against me. I turned around swiftly and nodded. I watched Professor Bancroft step back and grab a bottle. I watched the pale yellow wine fill the glass and my eyes followed him until he walked over and handed it to me. My lips brushed the edge of the wine glass and I took a whiff first and then a small sip. Only when I pulled away did I notice that Professor Bancroft had been watching me closely, a dark look on his face. "How does it taste?" He asked quietly and I shrugged. "Sweet. Easy to drink?" I mumbled, trying to find a perfect description for how it tasted. he nodded and took a drink. "Satisfying isn't it?" I shrugged again. I hardly knew anything about wines. They tasted the same to me. "I guess?" "How much do you think it costs" he asked suddenly. "$40?" He didn't respond immediately, taking another sip. "It's a 2001 Château d'Yquem. Valued around $1800" my eyes damn nearly popped out of their sockets and I almost spat it out but I stopped myself. Was I drinking an $1800 bottle? I shifted uneasily on the sofa, suddenly feeling queasy at the thought of what I could do with that money instead of it wasting away in my stomach. "I've had it for a while and this is my first time tasting it" he continued and I almost lost my composure. It wasn't any better. "Imagine after spending that much only to discover it tastes like water" I growled softly. I would throw fists with whoever sold the damn bottle to me but that could never be me because I'd never buy something so ridiculously expensive. "That's what your manuscript is like" he added and my eyes popped this time. "What?" My voice grew loud with anger from his insult. "A great collection" He mumbled, disregarding my enraged state. "Entirely forgettable" "I beg your pardon Professor Bancroft" I rose to my feet, setting the glass down and being so careful it didn't spill. I wasn't about to waste a drop of an $1800 wine. "Edmund" he corrected and I got even more enraged. "I didn't come here to be insulted, Professor," I gritted out. "Right. You came here to learn. How to make your work something other than a polished shell with nothing beneath it" My fist tightened and I ground my jaw harder. "And you've chosen to insult me over helping as you offered. Maybe you have no help to offer and you only needed company in your home that's actually a polished shell with nothing in it" The words left in an angry breath. I didn't feel regret immediately. Professor Bancroft's gaze darkened but he gave off no other reaction. I swallowed through the dryness in my throat, and then he spoke. "What do you imagine when you write?"JULIAI was barely recovering from the shock when he dragged me backward. My heart was pounding in my chest, unable to believe it. The strict Professor Bancroft was in a club. And in a questionable area. The door opened and I was dragged out to the top of the stairs with minimal light but enough to see the anger in his eyes and the black mask.Professor Bancroft tore it off."What are you doing here?" He barked at me, his jaw ticking. The shock wore off quickly at the sound of his voice. I crossed my arms over my chest as I stared him dead in the eye."I could ask you the same thing" His eyes twitched and my lips curved."I bet you wouldn't have an answer to that"His face reddened and I expected an explosion from him but he turned away, reaching for the door."Leave"My nerves pricked in irritation at being told what to do."Why?""This isn't a place for little girls" I scoffed at him. "Really? But it's fine for you""You don't know what goes on in there""And I'm more curious to f
JULIAMy eyes swept over the packed club. Coloured lights spread across the dance floor and the heavy bass music vibrated against my chest, reminding me of the exact reason I didn't like clubs.I looked over at Nina, already nodding her head in tune to the music and searching for her boyfriend in the packed crowd. As if sensing my eyes on her, she glanced at me."What's wrong?" She yelled over the loud music."This is more than I expected" I yelled back and she broke into a new smile."You'll have fun" she tried to encourage and I looked back at the crowd.I really doubted I'd have fun in a place like this. But I'd agreed to come, so I had to endure it."I'm going to grab us some drinks" she yelled again and before I could stop her, I saw her blend into the crowd."Damn it, Nina!" I muttered under my breath, walking on the edge of the dance floor, heading for the darker spot in the club.I'd just settled on an empty seat when a voice called my name. I froze and slowly turned around.T
JULIAI pushed the door open into Professor Bancroft's office. His eyes followed me as I walked, the relaxed posture unsettling me."Sit" the sharp order followed and I obeyed. My legs were trembling and it felt like they'd give out if I didn't sit down quickly."The essay is ready" I said softly, meeting his gaze for a second and quickly averting it as I reached for the copies I'd printed during the day."I want to hear it" "You won't look at it?" I asked sharply, feeling myself getting irritated. "No""But...""Did you write the essay yourself Miss Walker?""Of course I did" I retorted sharply."Let me hear it" I formed. What was the point of writing five hundred words if he only wanted to hear me say it? My fingers curled. He was only trying to torture me."We don't have all day Miss Walker" he growled, twirling a fancy pen between his fingers. My eyes followed the movement and then I drew my gaze back to his face."Love""Obsession first" he growled."There's no order" I watche
JULIAMy fingers flexed around the strap of my back and my heart raced. Professor Bancroft gathered his books, not sparing me a glance until the door closed behind the last student. And then he looked up again.I sucked in a breath as our gaze clashed, suddenly very self aware under his gaze."You weren't paying attention" he said sternly and a wave of what I refused to accept as disappointment rushed through me.I'd expected him to mention the evening at his home but from the look on his face, I had a feeling he wouldn't be addressing that."Julia" he snapped again, his voice echoing my name like a smooth caress."You've never struggled in my class before" he ground out."And yet I keep failing" I muttered under my breath and he arched a perfectly carved brow at me."If you can't concentrate in my class...""I'm fine Professor" I cut him off and his gaze narrowed at me. He probably hated my rude interruption, or maybe it was the impatient tone in my voice that irked him."Then why co
JULIAI couldn't stop thinking about the night at Professor Bancroft's home. The line I discovered I couldn't cross. The way his eyes stared at me as if he could read through me. It made me ask myself a lot of questions. And what lingered on my mind and made my fist clench repeatedly was the message he'd sent. That had been his way of telling me that he'd won and there was never a chance for me.I stared at it for long hours after I returned to my silent dorm room. Nina had been waiting with a lot of questions but I managed to brush her off and buried myself under my warm covers. It had been exactly six days since I left his home. And in less than 48 hours, I'd be sitting in the same class that he was going to lecture in. I didn't think I could look him in the eye but determination burned low in my stomach. I may have bolted from his house but that didn't end the challenge. If I avoided his gaze, I'd only be a bigger loser. I was determined to stare him deep in the eye and prove tha
JULIAI shifted uneasily at the question. Professor Bancroft's eyes stayed on me even though I wished he would look away."What needs to be written?"He shook his head. "I want details Julia" his gaze darkened again."I want to hear all of it"I swallowed again, my throat felt too dry."Chemistry and tension""No feeling" he said in the same even tone."Have you ever been with a man Julia?" I flushed instantly at the question. The urge to hide my gaze was strong but I stopped myself. I had no reason to be embarrassed."Of course" I couldn't help the defensive tone I used. Professor Bancroft hummed, as if digesting the information."Then I'm right to think you aren't unfamiliar with the art of pleasure...sex""No""Then you must be able to write something you have experienced easily?" I stared at Professor Bancroft's, whose eyes hadn't left mine once. His questions were drifting towards an edge that made me furrow my brows. Was he digging for a specific answer?"I don't understand how
