LOGINEDMUND
I sat in the cold comfort of my car, behind the tinted windows that gave me privacy from the outside world. My fingers clenched around the steering wheel repeatedly as I glanced at the main entrance of the building. Students loitered outside the building, some in groups while a few stood alone, watching. Their eyes shifted occasionally to my car parked under the large tree. Of course, they'd look. It wasn't every day a luxury sedan parked outside the rundown building. From the looks I spotted, I knew a few of them were curious to see who sat behind the wheel. Oh, the uproar that it'd cause if I stepped out. Which brought me back to the question I'd asked myself for most of the drive here. Why did I come? The answer seemed clear enough in my head but I refused to put into words what it really was. Not without admitting loudly that I was crossing into dangerous territories. I could drive away now and put an end to everything. Only I knew that it wouldn't truly be the end. The challenging look she had when she accepted my offer told me so. An offer I'd never planned to make but I did anyway. I couldn't resist the temptation no matter how hard I struggled. I looked back at the entrance and I spotted her. My breath hitched in my throat at the sight of her. A bright green dress that hugged her too perfectly. She walked out of the entrance and paused, taking a second to look around and then her eyes stayed on the sedan. One second passed. And another. And she walked towards me, her eyes shining with challenge and confidence, and her hips swaying in a way I shouldn't have noticed. My lips tugged into a small smile. Of course, she'd know. Julia Walker was too intelligent for her own good. I unlocked the door just as she arrived and she climbed in, her sweet perfume instantly filling the enclosed space. She relaxed into the chair and I watched her from the corner of my eye. "You're late" I said stiffly and she made a small sound. "By a minute" "Still late" I growled. "This isn't the classroom, Professor Bancroft" She stared at me as she spoke and I faced her, watching in satisfaction as her smile dropped a little. I studied her eyes with intent, they were much greener up close. "Then you'll refer to me as Edmund" I broke the silence and she couldn't hide her surprise this time. Julia turned away but not before I picked up on her change in breathing. "Where are we going?" She asked in a sharp tone. "You'll see" I responded in the same tone and started the engine. For the first few minutes of the ride, Julia stayed silent beside me. I focused on the driving mostly but my attention stayed on her, keeping it as moderate as I could. The only sound in the car was the soft whirr of the engine and the rich baritone coming from the speakers. Julia shifted in her chair and I fully glanced at her. "I didn't peg you as someone who would listen to this kind of song" she mumbled loud enough for me to hear. I didn't say anything for the first few seconds. "One would think that as a literature student, your most familiar saying would be not to judge a book by its cover" Her lips pressed into a line and she grew silent. I looked back at the road, thinking it was the end of the conversation and a little disappointed. "I don't. But I've seen enough chapters to have an opinion" she retorted sharply. "And yet you're surprised that I listen to this kind of music" I maintained my calm tone. Julia muttered under her breath, so low that I could barely hear anything and it upset me. My grip tightened around the steering wheel as the car grew silent for another few minutes and she spoke again. "Why are we doing this?" She asked suddenly. "Are you backing out?" I taunted and heard her teeth grind. "Of course not" she snapped with more emotion than her work had. "I'm only curious. It's not every professor who lends a helping hand to someone who insulted him" A helping hand? I bit back a laugh. "It's my duty to help you" "And you help everyone who fails?" "You're a special case Miss Walker" She snorted. "If I'm going to refer to you by your first name, then you should do the same" "Okay....Julia" I said as I stared at her and her breath hitched. Julia turned away faster than I liked, keeping her eyes ahead. "About your earlier question, I see room for improvement in your work. If you're going to be an author as you wish..." "How do you know that?" She asked with barely contained panic in her voice. I kept my tone and expression neutral. "Isn't that what every student in the department aims for?" Her shoulders visibly relaxed after my question. "You write for the sake of writing Julia. Your readers need to feel something other than staring at pretty words and flowery sentences that mean nothing to them. That's what distinguishes a good author from the rest" "And I'll do so from experience?" "I sense a lot of doubt in your words Julia. You don't think that's possible?" She held my gaze for a second and then I returned my attention to the road ahead. "If you don't, you just have to say the word and I'll turn around and take you back to your dorm and we'll never speak about it again" I said evenly. I was giving her a chance to back out. Just one word and she'll be back at her dorm faster than she could blink. But both of us knew the truth. She wouldn't take it. Because this has somehow turned into a challenge neither of us wanted to lose. Only I wasn't challenging her. I was playing her into a trap I'd already set.JULIAI was barely recovering from the shock when he dragged me backward. My heart was pounding in my chest, unable to believe it. The strict Professor Bancroft was in a club. And in a questionable area. The door opened and I was dragged out to the top of the stairs with minimal light but enough to see the anger in his eyes and the black mask.Professor Bancroft tore it off."What are you doing here?" He barked at me, his jaw ticking. The shock wore off quickly at the sound of his voice. I crossed my arms over my chest as I stared him dead in the eye."I could ask you the same thing" His eyes twitched and my lips curved."I bet you wouldn't have an answer to that"His face reddened and I expected an explosion from him but he turned away, reaching for the door."Leave"My nerves pricked in irritation at being told what to do."Why?""This isn't a place for little girls" I scoffed at him. "Really? But it's fine for you""You don't know what goes on in there""And I'm more curious to f
JULIAMy eyes swept over the packed club. Coloured lights spread across the dance floor and the heavy bass music vibrated against my chest, reminding me of the exact reason I didn't like clubs.I looked over at Nina, already nodding her head in tune to the music and searching for her boyfriend in the packed crowd. As if sensing my eyes on her, she glanced at me."What's wrong?" She yelled over the loud music."This is more than I expected" I yelled back and she broke into a new smile."You'll have fun" she tried to encourage and I looked back at the crowd.I really doubted I'd have fun in a place like this. But I'd agreed to come, so I had to endure it."I'm going to grab us some drinks" she yelled again and before I could stop her, I saw her blend into the crowd."Damn it, Nina!" I muttered under my breath, walking on the edge of the dance floor, heading for the darker spot in the club.I'd just settled on an empty seat when a voice called my name. I froze and slowly turned around.T
JULIAI pushed the door open into Professor Bancroft's office. His eyes followed me as I walked, the relaxed posture unsettling me."Sit" the sharp order followed and I obeyed. My legs were trembling and it felt like they'd give out if I didn't sit down quickly."The essay is ready" I said softly, meeting his gaze for a second and quickly averting it as I reached for the copies I'd printed during the day."I want to hear it" "You won't look at it?" I asked sharply, feeling myself getting irritated. "No""But...""Did you write the essay yourself Miss Walker?""Of course I did" I retorted sharply."Let me hear it" I formed. What was the point of writing five hundred words if he only wanted to hear me say it? My fingers curled. He was only trying to torture me."We don't have all day Miss Walker" he growled, twirling a fancy pen between his fingers. My eyes followed the movement and then I drew my gaze back to his face."Love""Obsession first" he growled."There's no order" I watche
JULIAMy fingers flexed around the strap of my back and my heart raced. Professor Bancroft gathered his books, not sparing me a glance until the door closed behind the last student. And then he looked up again.I sucked in a breath as our gaze clashed, suddenly very self aware under his gaze."You weren't paying attention" he said sternly and a wave of what I refused to accept as disappointment rushed through me.I'd expected him to mention the evening at his home but from the look on his face, I had a feeling he wouldn't be addressing that."Julia" he snapped again, his voice echoing my name like a smooth caress."You've never struggled in my class before" he ground out."And yet I keep failing" I muttered under my breath and he arched a perfectly carved brow at me."If you can't concentrate in my class...""I'm fine Professor" I cut him off and his gaze narrowed at me. He probably hated my rude interruption, or maybe it was the impatient tone in my voice that irked him."Then why co
JULIAI couldn't stop thinking about the night at Professor Bancroft's home. The line I discovered I couldn't cross. The way his eyes stared at me as if he could read through me. It made me ask myself a lot of questions. And what lingered on my mind and made my fist clench repeatedly was the message he'd sent. That had been his way of telling me that he'd won and there was never a chance for me.I stared at it for long hours after I returned to my silent dorm room. Nina had been waiting with a lot of questions but I managed to brush her off and buried myself under my warm covers. It had been exactly six days since I left his home. And in less than 48 hours, I'd be sitting in the same class that he was going to lecture in. I didn't think I could look him in the eye but determination burned low in my stomach. I may have bolted from his house but that didn't end the challenge. If I avoided his gaze, I'd only be a bigger loser. I was determined to stare him deep in the eye and prove tha
JULIAI shifted uneasily at the question. Professor Bancroft's eyes stayed on me even though I wished he would look away."What needs to be written?"He shook his head. "I want details Julia" his gaze darkened again."I want to hear all of it"I swallowed again, my throat felt too dry."Chemistry and tension""No feeling" he said in the same even tone."Have you ever been with a man Julia?" I flushed instantly at the question. The urge to hide my gaze was strong but I stopped myself. I had no reason to be embarrassed."Of course" I couldn't help the defensive tone I used. Professor Bancroft hummed, as if digesting the information."Then I'm right to think you aren't unfamiliar with the art of pleasure...sex""No""Then you must be able to write something you have experienced easily?" I stared at Professor Bancroft's, whose eyes hadn't left mine once. His questions were drifting towards an edge that made me furrow my brows. Was he digging for a specific answer?"I don't understand how
